Incredible Wild Fire Pictures

Here are some really crazy pictures of the High Park Fire 15 miles west of the town I live in (Fort Collins, CO). This thing is a beast of a wild-fire, it is close to 50,000 acres right now and only 10% is contained. It may be awhile before fire fighters get the whole thing contained cause the largest part of the fire is moving west into an area were 70% of the pines have been plagued by the beetle kill.

If you think the pictures are crazy than imagine seeing it in person.

You know its a bad fire when there is 1,263 firefighters and 30+ aircraft working on this fire. The sad part is that it started in a heavily populated residential area, almost 80% of the 50,000 acres it has burned is private land. Thats why firefighters aren't working on containment, instead they are focusing all of their efforts on structure protection and are essentially letting the most active part of the fire run west into government owned land.

Looks as bad or worse than the firestorms in 2003 and 2007 in Southern California. Hope they get this contained as quickly as possible. Any word on how it started? Arson?

lightning, I personally think it's very needed up there however I feel bad for the peoples houses who were destroyed.

reminded me of the Four Mile Canyon fire satellite picture, so I went and found a relevant one... These shots always blow my mind.

Exactly, if you live in the forest than you should prepare as if a fire is going happen. If you ignore that than you are setting you're self up for disaster because you live in a part of the world that is SUPPOSE to burn. Some people seem to forget that there is a reason the word mitigation is in the dictionary. Its also ignorant when people ignore the fire hazards surrounding their houses because it puts the firefighters in danger when they go up there to save those peoples houses. If everyone picked up the dead plant matter around their houses and if they made some room between the trees and their houses than firefighters wouldn't have do it while the fire is going on. The fire is growing towards parts of the forest were 70% of the trees are dead from beetle kill so its good that those parts can get some life in them again.

dont have pictures, but my family spotted a wildfire on priest lake , Idaho about 5 years ago. It was crazy once it got going.

This fire is so big that its not going to be 100% put out until this fall, or maybe until this winter if this dry heat keeps up. We need rain so do some rain dances for this area. Dry heat, low humidity, and high winds are the last thing you need when fighting a wildfire.

Damn thats gnarly! Hopefully they can keep it out of the residential areas. Its too sad to see people's homes burn down.

The flames from this crown fire are easily the biggest flames I have ever seen. I would not be surprised if these were 600ft at some points. If you wanna see some crazy video than watch this the vid. Crazy. Never seen anything like.

Oblivion sight.Sometimes fires are a natural process, I read this on the BBC several month ago. Regeneration of the land in a human life represents a long time but at the scale of the earth, 100 years is nothing.

Was this deliberate ?

white man fighting fire for the past ~75 years has really fucked up the forest. instead of burning off the undergrowth, the fire has enough kindling to take down the biggest trees in the forest (see previous vids).

sometimes, letting nature run it's course is the best thing to do. but then this of course would endanger landowners

reminds me of the kelowna fires from a few years back, those burned a lot of houses. hopefully this doesnt have the same effect.

There is a good four or five fires under 100 miles from my town (Durango, Co). Colorado is literaly on fire right now, I heard a new one just started in boulder a few hours ago. This shit cray.

Going to CO next week, I hope there are no fires near Copper. I'll probably see some on the plane/driving up.

Someone said there was one in Colorado springs which is relatively close to where I'll be driving up. I don't know whether to be interested or scared of these fires.

just got off a big fire in timmins, ontario not that long ago. hopefully we get deployed down there! there will be hotspots from this fire until the winter easily...

Are you flying into Colorado springs?

Because if you're not and you're flying into DIA and going to copper via I-70 you'll be nowhere near the Springs.

this is a great, powerful picture.

Vibes to all you west coasters who are either in danger or know someone who might be. And good luck to those fighting it (I know we have a few NS firefighters!)

This in my opinion is the scariest thing, with the massive blazes in Colorado right now our firefighting resources are spread so thin that if equally massive fires spring up in Utah or other western states , we're fucked.

Into DIA so i guess I won't see it, I hear there's one in Leadville though which is close by if I remember correctly. Kind of cool/scary.

twas a joke. I found it funny that they were all nonchalant and chill that there was a massive fire in front of them.

I can see some of the smoke from the fire in Colorado Springs from my house. I'm just hoping that no new ones start up. It doesn't help that we aren't really getting any rain.

My brother is working on this fire. He's been busy for quite a while now and it looks like he'll be busy for a while longer if this keeps up.

I'm not trying to be a dick, maybe its just me cause my parents both work for the forest service, but has anyone seen a forest fire before? It's like they don't exist until they're close to where you live. Much bigger fires have burned, for example yellowstone 1988, to name one very many bad fires in the past 50 years. But these new fires COULD be that bad, but aren't even close yet. People seem to forget that every summer the entire western area of the country burns like a mother fucker. This time, its just close to homes, now everyones like OMG fires.

Again, not trying to be a dick, but i think its just the "pray for *insert state name*" pictures on facebook that are setting me off the most. People are acting like this has never happened before and i saw someone say global warming (whether they were serious or not) but thats another bullshit piece of propaganda im sure we'll get real sick of seeing on the news.

It sucks there are such bad fires right now, but thats the reality of the season. Winter was dry, most of the western part of the country is in a drought, there is a fraction of the snowpack from last year, which believe it or not makes a huge difference. We are going to have some record fires this year and unfortunately, some peoples houses/buildings/maybe even entire towns are gonna be effected. This shit happens every year, i dont get why people are freaking out more than they normally do, its not like people houses didn't burn down last year...

/partially educated rant
