Improve getting ready at car during unideal weather

When temps drop to 5 degrees and it’s blowing like a bitch out I don’t think it’s being a bitch ?

You're gonna freeze yer dick off anyway if it's 5 and windy. Why delay it?

Easiest way is to not live in PA with his majesty Tom Wolf and his totalitarian reign of restrictions.

Or not be a pussy and get ready at your car.

I mean, you full on change from street clothes into ski gear at the resort? I always get all my ski gear on at home aside from my jacket and helmet and throw on a hoodie. Get to the parking lot, get out and swap the hoodie for the jacket, get your boots and helmet on and your all set.

Im not one to call someone a pussy here but fuck man if you were part of my crew and bitched about getting your gear on at the lot then we might have to have a sit down.

So you cant drive with snowpants and a hoodie on? If you get too hot just toss the hoodie and rock a base layer. That 5 second blast of cold air when you get out and throw the jacket on is like a right of passage man. Its like butt chugging 24 oz of espresso straight from old man Winter himself Ankilla style. You gotta love that shit.

Seriously, dont be that guy that bitches about changing at the lot. For your own sake, please just dont be that dude. Maybe im old school but you and your crew should be ready and walking to the lift exactly 2 min after you throw the car in park. Thats the benchmark, you all should be like the formula One pit crew guys but with boots instead of tires. Dont even worry about bucking that shit, you can do it in the lift line.

Even a half hour drive with snowpants on is too much. Either you sweat too much or the windshield fogs too much. Fuck I don't even wear my ski socks in the car, I'll change those in the lot too. Other than that I agree with you. It's -20 c/ -4f out? Fuck it, takes 5 minutes and you'll warm up if you ski hard enough.

To the op- challenge your friends not to bitch out and you'll be surprised by how long you can chill in the lot with just a t-shirt on.

I never had that problem with snowpants but I can see the issue. One trick I always do, especially if there are lot of people are in the car, is to crack one rear window by a mm or two. This gives a vent for all the hot moist air from everyone to escape so you always get fresh dry air coming through the vents and refreshing the air in the car. It actually makes a huge difference.

You guys seem to think I’m a pussy. We get geared up at the car on warm days anyways and it’s not bad. I’m asking about cold cold days or days where it’s pouring or snowing out. Also the issue of getting our gear all dirty and stuff arises cause of lack of space in the car and places to set shit. I realize what y’all are saying but just sucking it up is not an answer I was looking for cause yeah obviously

were you looking for the secret lodge??? I'm sorry just really confused

If you weren't a pussy you wouldn't have deleted the thread hahahha. Are you related to [tag=273292]@skiindiana[/tag]? Because he does the same shit.

oh cmon man you dont have to delete everything. Don't get down on yourself, we just like to have fun. Lots of good suggestions in this thread too that you might want to listen to

Y’all just didn’t really help so I deleted it cause fuck y’all

Wait I'm sorry what? Getting ready at your car is way better than getting ready in the lodge even during non-covid times. Honestly one of my biggest pet peeves of going skiing with my friends who are more casual.

Why the hell would I want to fight Dave the Dentist for the last cubby in the crowded-ass lodge when I can spread out, bump tunes, roll up, and take my sweet time at my car?

Our lodges were never packed I guess. My ski resort isn’t huge

I hope you find the stillness within yourself needed to see the world in more gentle way. Sometimes we get cold, sometime we ask silly questions, and sometimes we fall. But the beauty is that we all do it.

Yeah thats prolly pretty nice then. Loon is literally packed wall to wall with people even on weekdays

Also wearing snowpants/bibs into a gas station or rest stops is like one of my favorite things in the world haha.

I’m only against that cause you sweat a ton wearing them in a car and then during the day it freezes. I never go into the lodge during the day anyways to warm up cause I’m anal about my gear. I’ve walked into a gas station fully kitted once and it was pretty funny seeing the reactions

We’d have the lodge to ourselves and be relaxed. At 10pm after we got kicked off the slopes sitting in the lodge and getting changed for the drive home was chill

Oh man so much this. Nothing better than rolling in with a XL hoodie, ski pants and a beanie to grab snacks and a coffee for the drive back.

Back to the OP. First, never delete anything here, it raises contempt in the collective soul of NS. You said what you said and you might get roasted but fuck it just roll with that shit. You have a pretty unique situation that you can change in the lodge which is something 99% of skiers cant feasibly do. I have been skiing for almost 3 decades and never once had that but if you can and it works for you then thats cool. For the rest of us sucking it up and changing in the lot is just part of skiing. Like I said earlier, you learn to love it. I have changed in all kinds of shit conditions from whiteout sideways snow to sub zero temps to slush in muddy ass parking lots.

That being said, what car are you driving, how is your gear stored and what do you usually wear? Ill help set you up with a game plan.

We either drive a Toyota RAV4, subie outback, or subie Impreza. I wear long Johns, a set of light padding for my hips and my tailbone cause I broke my tailbone in football a few years ago and it still hurts from time to time. Sweatpants, bibs, sweatshirt and coat or just a light windbreaker depending on weather, helmet boots etc. my friends snowboard and west similar shit. Our cars are always jammed packed and you can’t sit in any of them with ski boots on unless you’re in the front seats by yourself. We all carry 1 duffle bag with all our outerwear and wear everything else to the resort. 2-3 hours to our resorts on our passes

Honestly the best way is to not be a bitch about it. Not sure where you live but people here go outside in the winter to do all sorts of things in temps that vary from -10c to -30c and somehow they don't die. I am sure you will be fine. An actual tip: it's all in your mind, if you tell yourself that you are cold and that it's too cold out you will act that way, just tell yourself that it isn't bad and you will be fine. If you can't accept being outside in temperatures below freezing then maybe skiing or winter sports in general aren't for you.

If you want a step by step guide: get out of car, put on pants one leg at a time if not already on, DON'T put your foot in the snow if you can help it (I like to stand on top of my shoes), put on jacket if not already on, put on boots, put on helmet/ headwear/ goggles, put on mitts, grab skis, and go.

Cool, first things first make sure you have synthetic long johns and swap out the cotton sweatpants for fleece pants. In fact, ditch anything cotton- its the bane of skiing. The problem with cotton is it soaks with sweat on the way down then freezes when you cool off on the chairlift. A synthetic base layer will wick sweat and you will be 100% more comfortable all day.

For the car ride up, definitely use the window trick I mentioned earlier where you crack one back window. Make sure the heater is set to pull in fresh air and not recirculate air too. Trust me, with 5 dudes in the car it will make a massive difference. The Outback and RAV4 have decent room but maybe skip on the Impreza on really cold days. I have an Impreza Sedan and its laughable how little room the poor souls in the back have.

Get a boot bag for your boots if you dont have one and it sounds like you all have small duffle bag each for your gear. I typically bring a boot bag with a side pocket for my gloves and goggles then just buckle my helmet to the top handle so its all together.

Now, when you get to the lot this is what you should do. The front passenger side of the car is going to have the most room so that is your changing 'spot'. Whoever is sitting there goes first. Have someone in the back hand up their boot and duffel bags to the front. Maybe all get different colored bags to make it obvious. The dude in the front changes his clothes and gets his gear on. Get everything else on then open the door, put your boots on the ground and rotate in the seat to get your boots on. Your feet will only be in the cold for about 10 seconds when you get fast. Once the first guy is set then a guy from the back moves to the front and repeats the process. If you have enough room in the drivers seat you can do the same thing and it goes twice as fast. I was half joking about the Pit Crew, once you get the system down you will be ready to hit the slopes in like 5 min tops.

I would forget about any kind of tent, it will be a PITA to get set up and you will all hate each other by the time you try to get it set up and taken down when you are stoked to ski.

Anyway, that is what I recommend. Also, trail mix is great for stuffing into your pockets for a snack while on the slopes. I have actually gotten to the point where I stopped going in for lunch altogether if you just snack on the lift. Not being able to kick it at the end of the day kind of sucks with a long drive back but that is something we just have to deal with now. I skied in Colorado for years and the lodges are not worth going into anyway but it sucks to lose a local hangout.

I'm with you OP, I HATE booting up in the parking lot. As a washed up boot fitter, it goes against my religion. Putting on cold boots in the parking lot can ruin your day. One of the best things about moving back east after a 2 year stint in CO was being able to sit inside and put my boots on. I know everyone will probably downvote this, but that's because y'all wear full tilts and scuff your soles all the way to the lift, then wonder why you are pre-releasing out of your Pivot 18's all day.

I'm just gonna buy a sprinter van and pimp it out. That's my best solution.

This actually brings up a good point. NEVER put your boots in the back of a pickup or in a roofrack for the ride up, even in a bag. Its best to keep them in the warm passenger area. If you ever stay at a cabin, never put them in the unheated ski storage area either. Putting on ice cold boots is hell and should be avoided at all cost.

I've changed in my undies in sub 20 degree weather, it ain't so bad, plus you get this effect:

Driving in ski boots kinda sucks but I hate putting them on in the cold so I do it at home. Walk mode makes it easier to control the pedal but I end up lifting my leg to slide the boot back and fourth. Cruise control also helps

If I’m driving long distance and putting boots on there, I’ll always drive in different socks than what I ski in. Fuck wet socks.

Ppl really can’t tolerate driving in snow pants? Mine aren’t shells and I just wear shorts under them but I’ve toured in them and driven 4 hours home no problem. If it became a problem I’d prob just run my defroster on low and have the heat mostly off.

I have a floormat in my trunk that I roll out onto the snow so I can step onto it with my socks when transitioning into boots in the parking lot. At the end of the day it's also nice to stand on when I take my snowpants off and change into jeans and put shoes on.

I usually just get in my full setup at home and then just turn the AC all the way up on the drive to the mtn. Same thing on the way home, never even have to smell my boots until I'm home in front of a warm fire

If you can come with your base layers on and all equipment organized in a manner of order of how your gonna dress.

When I arrive I unpack helmet, goggles mask, gloves and anything else I’m going to bring. I put anything in a pack if I’m bringing one, pocket what needs pocketed. Put on mid layers and shells then I either put boots on in front seat hanging out side or under the rear door of the Jeep sitting in back with lots of room. Remove skis and poles from rack , lock Jeep and go ski.
