If Obama was white, how do you think this election would be different?

This isn't meant to be a racist kinda thing or anything like that,

Today I heard someone talking about this and I thought it was pretty interesting-

If Obama wasn't half black, but 100% white. But he would run his entire campaign the same way as normal obama did:

What would be different? Would it change the outcome?

Lets try and keep this civil and not start a shit storm. Just a nice discussion.

I would guess that he would be much more popular and win by a much larger margin. I say that because minority voters would probably still go democrat even if he were white. In most polls among white working class voters, Romney and Obama are actually quite close. The one place where Romney has a huge margin over Obama among white working class voters is the south, particularly men without college education.

Now, maybe I'm crazy, but what is one problem that white working class non-college educated southern men might have with Obama.......?

Hmmmmmm......

I think his skin color had a lot to do with urban, otherwise disenfranchised minority voters increasing in number. Although I feel that any other candidate with the charisma that he had would have accomplished the same results.

McCain ran a poor campaign. After 8 years of Bush they could have run Homer Simpson against the GOP and won. (a bit of hyperbole, but you get what I mean).

Yeah totally. I mean in stead of having 94% support among black voters, he might only have 90% support like Clinton did.

People saying that he never would have won if he were white are kidding themselves. 08 was a highly favorable year to democrats, pretty much anyone who won the democratic primary would have beat McCain. If being black makes it easier to win how come Herman Cain and Alan Keyes didn't get the Gop nomination? How come Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton never got the Democratic nomination? In fact how come Obama was the FIRST african america presidential candidate from any major US party since the beginning of the country? You really think he's being helped by racist rumors like he was born in Kenya, or he's a muslim? Get real. There may be a few people that voted for him because voting for a black president was "cool," and he probably got a few extra percentage points among black voters, but if you think that outweighs the massive amounts of both implicit and explicit racism that still exists in this country you're living in a fantasy world.

I think this is why people are saying he would not have won the first election...

The fact that there was a roughly 10% increase in first time black voters who came out and voted gave him a slight edge. Could he have won without it, probably. But IMO if you are voting FOR Obama because he is black you are just as ignorant and racist as the ones who DONT vote for Obama because he is black.

He almost did- if the fact that he's a worthless excuse for a man hadn't come out, he'd have probably gotten it.

Well you have to look at it from a black persons perspective, it's probably pretty liberating to have a black person as president after 43 white dudes running this country since 1789, and it's definitely not as racist as not voting for someone because their black

It absolutely is liberating. BUT if the ONLY you are doing is voting for someone is based on the color of their skin I fail to see a difference..

If you are like SWEET hes black, AND thinks the way I think, then I support your decision. However if you are just like SWEET hes black, I better vote for him cause I'm black. Then I still think that is just as ignorant and racist as not voting for someone solely because they are black.

If Obama were white then he would not get 95% of the black vote.... Obama would gain more white voters... Especially from the racist white people.

In other words he would win either way.

I feel as though young people hype him up as much as they do because hes black tho, which is completely racist. I mean there has never been such a youth dominating president ever I feel

he would probably loose because people don't want to feel racist. He's really not all that great, mind you romney is a complete fuck so you know...

I dont think its as much because hes black as the fact that hes current. He is in the limelight, goes on talk shows regularly, has Jay-Z preform at one of his rallys... Like really, Jay-Z??? He is more in tune with the younger generations than the older guys. He pushed to be the first president to have a blackberry, He just seems much more casual and laid back, which is why I think young people like him.

there'd be less coloured voters, and less people saying he was born in africa. that's about all i can think of that would change.

he probably would still win. many white people, especially in the south vote against him simply because hes black. it goes both ways.

Yeah but a lot of people hate him just because he is black too.

Sort of a tangent but when did it become OK to say the things that people say about Obama, about the POTUS? Like just because he is black people wish death upon him, call him a dirty n**ger who deserves to be shot, say he is a Muslim sand n**ger and that he should be lynched, saw one guys cover photo was a dog shitting on a newspaper with Obama as the cover. It's like all these "Patriots" forgot that they ARE talking about the President of the United States of America and their commander-in-chief... Never heard of that happening with the shitty presidents we have had in the past. Well I mean there are always extremists who actually shoot presidents and shit but never have I heard of such widespread acceptance of serious hate of the US President. Pretty disgusting.

Well i feel like Obama represents black people and people who live in cities and/or don't have a lot of money better, growing up pretty poor and not being able to pay for college by himself, he can just relate to more urban people, so even if they don't really know what any of his policy's are they can relate, whereas the GOP candidate is some stuck up white guy who doesn't even know what groceries he gets

very different. he would not have met with the roadblocks that republican congress threw at him every step of the way in his first term. society wouldn't be so polarized. republican polarity, evangelism, and increasing craziness is a thinly veiled reaction to white conservatives simply not liking a black president. we are increasingly more akin to post reconstructionist america than post racial america. were not gonna return to Jim Crow, but seriously, why do you think white conservatives are so vehemently against a centrist democrat? if Obama was white this divide wouldnt be so stark.... the negative image that republicans have put forth throughout this campaign season is fueled by racist ideologies, by an increasingly aging and alienated white, rural conservative bloc who are scared of increasing young liberal minority populations
