Chicago Spire, Chicago, US

Formerly known as the Fordham Spire and 400 North Lake Shore Drive this

design will be the tallest building in North America when it is

completed in 2010. At 2000 feet it will be the first building to reach

that milestone in height.

Trump Tower, Dubai

What do you get when you mix the Donald and the Middle East’s most

exciting city? Welcome to the Trump International Hotel and Tower.

Located on one of the mile long man made palm islands this 48 storey

building will be finished in 2009.

Trump Tower, Chicago, US

The man with the strange hair sure knows how to get things built. His

latest project on one of Chicago’s most famous corners is already

underway and will ready for the firings in 2009.

Lighthouse Tower, Paris, France

The Tom Mayne designed Phare Tour will rival the Eiffel Tower in

height. The odd but eco friendly design will be completed in 2012 in

the La Defense district of the French capital.

Freedom Tower, New York, US

Rising from the wreckage of the World Trade Centre, the Freedom Tower

will return New York to the forefront of skyscraper design. After a

long time in getting the project started the single tower will be

finished in 2011 and will reach 1,776 feet high.

burj-tower-dubai.jpg

Burj, Dubai

Dubai is where is at architecturally these days. The crown will be the

Burj. When completed it will the tallest building in the world by a

long shot. The lead architect is Adrian Smith of the Chicago’s

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Its final height is a secret but it is

believed will be 808 metres (2651 feet) high.

20 Fenchurch Street, London, UK

This interesting building project planned for the City of London has

been dubbed the ‘Walkie Talkie Building.’ The curvy project is designed

to make use of solar power and be remarkably study.

Shard London Bridge, London, UK

When completed in 2009 it will be the tallest building on the London

Skyline, dwarfing all other projects for the foreseeable future.

Designed by famed Italian architect Renzo Piano, the glass pyramid will

rise 1016 feet into the London clouds.

StPetersburgGazprom.jpg

Gazprom Tower, St Petersburg, Russia

Already controversial, this 300m tall tower will dwarf the architecture

of this Russian city. The world’s largest oil company plans to have the

tower built by 2010.

Canadian Museum of Human Rights, Winnipeg, Canada

Following the experiences of Bilbao and Valencia, this Canadian city

hopes to draw tourists to an architecturally significant project. This

museum, designed by Antoine Predock is slated to be opened by 2009.

those are dop i like tihs one, it looks like a cartoon.

Doubt it. In Dubai, they get things done - the Burj Dubai, currently the worlds tallest tower, was started in 2004, and its over 160 stories tall at this date. They're putting up something like a floor every two days. They know how to get shit done.

the one that trump is building in chicago is fucking HUGE! i stayed at the hyatt which was basically right across the street over the summer and they were in the middle of building it. not only is it right on the river, its so much wider then it looks like in that picture

wow, those are so bad ass. the first spiral one, and the last one in canada look sweet. then that like curved "walkie talkie" one was really cool too. that stuff is so awesome...amazing how it can stay up though.

those are sweet, wonder of theyre planning on making them eco friendly or concious or something, seems like with all that glass they could do wonders with heating and/or energy

great thread!

architecture is so amazing. and it seems that recent developments in technology are making it possible to build those insanely large buildings, like the al burj in dubai. i bet you we'll see a lot more of the same.

the Burj Al Arab is fucking ridiculous. $2000 a night minimum. and Agassi and Federer did that tennis match on the heli pad.

Dubai's also got the underwater hotel and the man-made islands shaped like a palm tree.

Dubai > everywhere else

Dubai is fucking sweet. I'm putting it on my list of places to visit before I die. What I don't get is how does the shit stay up in Chicago? Isn't the city built on a swamp? I know Manhattan island is a giant slab of basalt, which is why they can build the skyscrapers so high with less foundation, but man they have some crazy shit with foundations nowadays.

Also, that freedom tower has some BS going on. What is that spire at the top of it? Is that just to add height? That's like the Chrysler tower vs. the Empire state. The Chrysler tower has the big spike on top of it so that it could be taller than the competing tower. (I think it's the Empire state at least. It's been awhile since I've been to NYC).

But who is the freedom tower competing against?

dude those all suck, they are just another example of how the rich white man is trying to get you down, i mean if it were a perfect world wouldnt we all be living in one of those, but i cant live in one, so why should they get too? another fine example of big business stepping on the little guy, why do you need all that? why not put up some little shack, instead of these huge buildings, this frustrates me so bad, look at all this big bad capitalist society we live in has created...

most of those are really cool BTW

I don't necessarily think they are really competing against anyone, it just some artistic symbolism.

Its really an ostentatious display of wealth. The ones commissioned in Dubai cost nothing compared to the money involved. We see Trump is putting money to good use (although there has to be more than his funds), and the one in St. Petersburg will probably go way, way, way over budget (since the Scottish parliament building was about 10 times over budget, and they're the same people doing the tower in Russia) but money isn't an issue.

Some of it is pretty cool though.

And there is some sick shit being done that isn't all that large. Really sick stuff.

All of the land is owned by the Dubai government, but they lease it out and have tons of incentives to build.

this is starting to look like what Sim City predicted 2050 would look like. anybody remember that shit? that game was awesome

another thing to remember, its in style to hate on people who have more than you,

i would like to know, how much some of these projects are funded by big oil, (remember they are greedy bastards) so how can some of you like the product of their greedy hoarding?

also next time i hear "walmart sucks" "they step on the little guy"... i would like to see some objective reports on workers rights in the UAE?(specifically the towers) i honestly dont know what the working conditions like are there. but i would conjure up a guess and say, they treat there employees like shit, compared to wally's world...

sorry for post whoring, but i really have to get this out of my system...

i want to know, how do the "poor" in the UAE live? all i hear is bitching and moaning about "america has all this money to do this and that" well how much extra does the UAE have that they can put up some of the most extravagant buildings ever seen in the history of the world... do they spend nearly as much on "entitlements" as america does? i bet not! also lets see some comparisons of how the "poor" in america live verses the "poor" in UAE..

You think that one in Dubai currently being built is big at ~2600 ft? How about this one.

301px-Alburjrenderlowres.jpg

~3445 ft. The Al Burj.

its gonna be fucking crazy when every building in a city is that big. Base jumping/being batman would be so sicknasty

I doubt that will end up being over 3000, they've been scaling it back consistently after initially coming out with nearly a mile tall. It'll beat the Burj Dubai, no question, and this is Dubai, so while unlikely, they could push it over 3000 quite easily.

the Burj Dubai is insane. The the thing that bothers me is imagining if there was a fire in there. how would they deal with it?

And i think someone tried posting something about the Ryugyong hotel in north Korea. In case anyone was curious, its this massive, concrete, pyramid shaped hotel in North Korea that is not finished, but never will be. I believe they ran out of money, and there was something unsafe about the concrete they used, so now its this huge, empty 105 story embarrassment that looms over North Korea's capital city.

I wonder how long it would take for someone to freefall off of that. Long enough to rethink jumping I'm sure.

they are almost trippy looking.

i want to go to school for engineering so i can design this type of shit
