How to test your knee?

Hey guys so I'm a bit worried. Couple weeks ago at steamboat I knuckled the step down had a pretty sharp pain in right knee but was able to keep skiing and rode the rest of the week. Could still feel it but wasn't losing mobility/ or that much strength so I didn't think anything of it. It's been about 3 weeks now and it's still an annoying pain that just won't seem to go away. I even took a 4-5 day rest period before skiing again. I'm still skiing at about 90% every day but still feel it on the outside of my knee on turns and even just chillin around home. So I really don't want to go get an MRI, I thought it was just a strain or something but it's a persistent annoying pain and I'm sooo over it. Is there a way to test if it's serious injury or not? What should I do ns

Could have a very small tear. Get a MRI. If its just a small tear you should be able to ski the season and decide in what to do after.

I would keep skiing with 40%-50% and after season go see a doctor, maybe earlier if u have too strong pains during skiing...

Good luck!

Hey im not doctor but my dad is and when i injured my knee awhile back he did some tests to see if the ligaments are okay. What he did was made me hold my leg straight out then with one hand he pushed down on my femur right above my knee and with the other he grabbed my shin and pulled it up and down and if i felt pain, that was a bad sign possibly a acl pcl tear. Then he put his hand on the side of my knee and grabbed my ankle and then began pulling my ankle while pushing on my knee to test my mcl and lcl. You can try this at home but honestly i would recommend going to a doctor because if this is performed incorrectly you might screw something up even more.

After a few slams on the knees I would just say to give it time. I hit my knee hard off a jump once and it took like 3 weeks to lose the pain. I am nothing close to a doctor but that is my experience.

I feel you. I have growing pains in my knees because I'm hitting my growth spurt and its a cunt. I have Osthgood slaughters (I know I spelled it wrong) and minor arthritis which will get worse as I age. I would definetly see a doctor. Could be something you don't really think it is.

get an mri. even if it seems minor, it could seriously fuck your life up later. Same type of thing happened to me. what could have been a few weeks off turned into a $5000 6 month hell trip to recovery. even if you have no insurance, still get it, it will save you money in the long run

if you do have a small tear you do not want to keep skiing on it. the chances of you fully tearing it are high. ive had 2 acl surgeries and knees are nothing to fuck with.

op did it swell up soon after you ate shit?

Ok so I sucked it up and got an Mri about a month ago, sure enough it was a partial tear in my acl. The doctor said they do surgery if it's torn more than 50% otherwise they just let it be and that's the case for me. He said it's cool if I kept skiing on it and I did now I'm a couple weeks off the slopes and it still hurts like shit. The actual injury happened at the end of February. I dunno if I made it worse or not but its still really annoying. Should I get a second opinion on it? Do I just rehab the hell out of it (I'm trying to stay super active working and biking and skating)? Will i prob end up tearing it completely? I feel like it's too late now to get surgery and I'll be out for next season so I'm kind of fucking pissed and I don't know what to do about it. Any advice would be great thanks

From past experience, time can be the best medicine. Just take it easy and let it heal itself, so don't do anything that will aggravate it. I'm sure the doctor you saw knew what he was saying, but I don't think he should have said keep skiing on it if you have a partially torn ACL. My best advice is just to take some time to let it heal so you are good to go by next season. Hope it goes well dude!

Give it rest man. Ligaments aren't like bones that heal relatively quickly, and when your doc gave you the OK to keep skiing, he probably figured you'd be out there cruising blue runs, not hurling yourself through the air to hard landings and metal. It's possible that the ligament hasn't healed at all since February. I'd lay off the impact sports for a while and build up strength in the rest of your knee.

When I tore my MCL, I rested it for 10 or 11 weeks, got the green light from the doc to start skating and trampolining again, and re-tweaked it the second day on a trampoline. The knee was then out for another 7 weeks. Play it safe dude. You don't want to risk next ski season.

that's the exact same way i tore my acl man. just be really careful when you land forward and try to land switch on most things. and seeing a doctor might be a good idea too lol.

My knee has been bugging me all season just like you were describing, after multiple doctor visits telling me it was fine, finally got an MRI a couple weeks ago.... Turns out I've been skiing on a torn ACL and medial meniscus all season. Really doesn't stop you from skiing, I've actually progressed a good amount with no ACL the real danger is your knee giving out without an ACL to stabilize it and resulting in cartilage damage which is exactly what happened to my meniscus... And cartilage can't really be fixed which leads to an early onset arthritis, so if you have any doubt that your knee will give out on you get surgery because ultimately an ACL can be replaced but your cartilage cannot.

One season back in my racing days I had some nagging knee issues, ignored them, and continued to ski and train. By the end of the season I had patellar tendinitis in both my knees. That shit still hasn't gone away seven years later and probably never will.

Go see a doctor and take the necessary amount of time off. Knee injuries suck.

Depending on your age, your partially torn ACL may heal. About 1 in 5 heal, depending on the severity of the tear and especially how old/fit you are. I'd follow your doctors advice first and foremost, but otherwise take it really easy for the next 4 or 5 months, go see a physio (I think you Americans call them Physical therapists), get some exercises and get the muscles around your knee really strong to help support it.

When I was about 12 I had a partially torn ACL and I was lucky enough to have it heal. It still doesnt have the same strength as a healthy ACL, but is certainly way better than having a reco.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Looking back I should've seen the doctor way sooner. It's been over 4 months and still bothering me. I realize it takes longer for ligaments to heal so I'll give it more time. Supposed to climb rainier with the pops and brother in September so hopefully it's feeling alright by then. I feel like the probability of it tearing fully is high so I probably should just get the surgery but I want to be active this summer and summit rainier in September and ski all of next season so I guess I'll take my chances. If I could go back I would've seen doctor right away and stopped skiing instead of finishing season. Knee injuries are stupid arrrgh.

Ooof... get the muscles in your knee in shape. It's gonna be rock city on Rainier in September, and you don't want to permanently mess up your knee trying to limp down an endless scree field on day 2.
