For those of you that don't have the luxury of reading 'Ski Canada', I thought I'd share some of the interesting facts from a recent article I found.

- Typical speeds were consistent at ski areas across the US with an average speed of 43kph (standard deviation of 11.2kph) and maximum speed of 83.7 kph

- 84% of skiers and boarders were in excess of 31.7kph and 16% in excess of 54.2

- Skiers go an average of 5.6kph faster than boarders

- Those with helmets go faster than those without

- Males go 6.4kph faster than females

- People, on the whole, underestimate their speed. This difference increases as speed increases.

- It took little effort to get three digits (107kph) on slow, spring snow

that's interesting man, I've often wondered how fast I'm going sometimes when I'm just bombing shit, it feels pretty fucking fast but I have no idea what the fastest I've ever gone is.

seriosously the world operates on the metric system.... Everything. The US is just dumb in that sense... and for those of you who say fuck it. Go a ski shop and ask them for a pair of PE's in like a 54 inch or something and see what kind of look you get back. The metric system is everywhere, its about time the US give in.

this is a very perplexing concept ive just realized. i spent 6 years racing, my top clocked speed was aroun 70 mph, the fastest being around 75 i think ( im small... this was a FIS DH on the womens olympic course at snowbasin... so it was fast enough). 70 felt pretty sketch, i was all racered out with downhill suit and 210s and such... and i was getting lots of fishing action in the skis... it was intense... so it seems hard to believe that 'its not hard to break 60' (which = about 100kph). then again, i built a step up in the parking lot at crystal last xmas... and the tow in required us to go 40... which was pretty much nothing... so how can 40 feel so slow and 70 so fast?

Haha, Junpier jungle. The volly patrollers are retards. I've straigtlined from the top of Ptarmigan, Paradise and Summit. I have no clue how fast I'd be going but it's fast! I don't get how you guys know your speed? Are you just estimating, if so, I think you're off. Who really takes a speedometer with them when they go skiing? I dunno, maybe I'm just dense. Everybody has thought of checking their speed when they straightline but who actually does? (Without some race setup still up or something on some random day)

i used to get 'pulled over' by the ski patrol at winter park and steamboat all the time.

i think that stat about males going a bit faster than females should be reexamined and only studied on experienced males and females. cause i know alot of woman that go balls to the walls when they ride. but i do agree with the skier/snowboarder differences in speed.

All i know is there are times when i'm going fast. damn fast. Sometimes you get a reality check when you're flying down a run, and in the middle of a carve you leave the ground because you're going so fast and the snow dips enough for you to leave it, so then you're sideways about 6inches (what's that like...14 centimeters or something?)off the ground,and unless you turn it into a 180; you're screwed.

so many stupid ignorant Americans :( (I am american, btw). The metric system is off the chains, both mathematically speaking and everyday usage. We are just too pompous to learn the system the rest of the world does, because ours works for us and we think we are the shizzla. oh well :) but yeah, I always underestimate my speed

and to the person who said the world should all learn english... why? are we better than everybody else. they all lear english in school, but americans arn't required to actualy learn anything. i feel that it is ignorent to say fuck them they should speak english. i personaly feel that us americans, and canadians who don't speek french, should learn at least one language if not more. i personaly kinda am fluent in german, but i really want to learn french. mainly so i can understand all the french canadians. it is nice to know what people are saying around you.

- 84% of skiers and boarders were in excess of 19.7mph and 16% in excess of 33.7mph

- Skiers go an average of 3.5mph faster than boarders

- Those with helmets go faster than those without

- Males go 4mph faster than females

- People, on the whole, underestimate their speed. This difference increases as speed increases.

- It took little effort to get three digits (107kph/66.5mph) on slow, spring snow
