It’s not a lifestyle if it makes you want to shoot yourself. A plow got stuck right at that 3 way intersection and blocked the road adding an additional hour

I am going to be very sad when this happens because I like driving up the canyon when I know there's always a parking spot to be found. If they start tolling the canyon while keeping bus service the same then I will be absurdly sad.

I would argue the opposite, less cars = less traffic.

PC town traffic was significantly better this year because the parking cost money. same shit is gonna happen in the canyon, more car pooling, more busses, less cars and likely less traffic.

from what I understand the toll will be from 7-10 AM in the morning on weekends, meaning that it will simply shift traffic around those times. I think a lot of people would rather just wait and drive up at 10 AM rather than getting up early to take a bus.

sounds like if you're down with the bus you're getting first tracks then.

the bus system needs to be 2-3x for sure, its bullshit it got cut in half this year. but i believe with a toll they will push public transit very hard.

You’d be surprised, on a pow day people act nutty here. I’d be down for a toll system at bridger, pow days just aren’t enjoyable here anymore.

Busses plus toll from 7-10 am doesn’t sound bad honestly

I skied alta for 5 years when I lived in SLC, been in PC for 10 years now and I refuse to drive to the cottonwoods right now. It's way too much of a hassle, plus an extra 30mins and another canyon/pass, when I can take a 10 min bus to PC.
 
Ok right on. Skied pc/canyons for the first time a few years ago and it was so fun. It’s kind of like the northstar equivalent (bigger obviously) while Alta/snowbird have more of the alpine/squaw vibes

The skiing in the cottonwoods is far better than the PC area, but in my specific situation its not worth it, at least with how traffic is right now. If I lived in SLC i'd be going to Alta.

Big was way worse than Little. Parking reservations at Alta helped immensely. Snowbird with its 100 entrances/exits was the only cause of traffic in Little this year. Parking reservations at every resort and more busses would fix the problem entirely.

do you mean that you prefer the terrain or that the snow quality is better (maybe both)?

in order of preference, i like to ski pow, park, then groomers. I don't care much about dropping off of tall stuff and i hate smashing through chopped up 3-day old snow, although i'm not sure many people like that. i found the skiing at alta/snowbird to be more of that than anything else and it was just annoying getting rattled around. all that being said, the pow was sick while it lasted

Another hot take: If you fiend for untracked, skiing resorts on a pow day this year was just not good in Utah. I skied 70+ days and had one or two storm days where I actually skied untracked snow. Rope drops on bluebird days are the way to score. Resort skiing is pretty played out in Utah right now. I was blown away skiing in Washington this year and skiing pow all day on a Friday
 
Some of the best pow days I've ever had inbounds was at Willamette Pass in Oregon simply because nobody else was there. Much more challenging to have those kinds of days at Mt. Bachelor, Mt. Hood, Mammoth Mtn, Whistler, etc.

PC area gets plenty of good snow, this year was bonkers, we got almost 700" on this side of the wasatch, which is massive, PC average is ~300.

The cottonwoods gets more snow, it stays better longer (later in the year is better too) but overall, the snow quality is comparable in both places. The terrain in the cottonwoods is better, but when a foot of snow falls all you need is a steepish pitch to have a good time, PC has plenty of that.

Either way, if you're in SLC you'll want to ski in the cottonwoods, its unmatched and it is comparable, if not better than jackson, tahoe, whistler, montana, etc.

I got plenty of untracked runs at PC this year, but its not like that was different 15 years ago. Storm skiing is one of my favorites, but a rope drop the next day is always fun. If you're getting bummed out by skiing powder in utah idk what to tell you, its definitely busier these days but you can't let other people ruin your ski day, thats on you my guy. I had more powder days this year than I had in the last two seasons combined, there was plenty of snow out there to be skied.

There is a reason less people are skiing powder in washington, it's not as good as utah. Utah has some of the best snow in the world, traffic in the cottonwoods has been a problem since I've lived here (2007) its just far more exacerbated because there are way more people trying to ski here than before.

I don't blame you for being turned off because of that, I bet a ton of people are feeling the same way you do, there is a tipping point where the product the resorts are offering will suffer because there are too many people skiing.

Don't get me wrong, I had an insane amount of fun this year. Even the bad days were epic. I just chose hiking for turns much more often than dealing with the powder panic at the resorts. It just wasn't worth it to me for 1-3 very good runs and then skiing chop

yeah i reckon for the right skier, there is no better place on earth than alta or snowbird. i've skied each a couple times and had fun but it wasn't really my jam. i don't ski big resorts on pow days cause i can get first chair at diamond peak with ease and shred with all my local homies. then park days at northstar and ripping groomer days with the lady at kirkwood keep my happy between storms.

i believe it. it is undeniably special, if not quite right for me. i sort of think that there are a number of places where i could have ended up and been happy enough to never leave. in my case, it just happened to be north tahoe. now, i can't imagine living anywhere else, or ever wanting to. my ski aspirations are minor compared to my biking, so now it is sort of like i have amazing summers backed up by insane winters instead of the other way around.

What ski are you guys doing this on. I have the Reckoner 112s and I am finding that they are a little soft for resort pow days.

ARV 106s have been my main ski this year, great for 6-12" of new snow and after its gets skied they just crush through the crud and shit, I love 'em.

Very interesting, I always pegged Armadas as softer skis. Haven't ridden 'em since I had the Alpha II's. I see Evo rates their flex as pretty damn stiff. How about on less fresh snow, skiing mostly Mammoth ATM. I have the Mirus Cor for groomer days but they handle shit on the ice and are a little narrow for when it gets super melty or when there is any wind reset snow. I'm 6' 210 and think the 188 may be the move.

Yeah i had ARV 106s in like 2015 that were noodles, theyve made them quite stiff now, id definitely go for the 188s for your height/weight.

I skied my ARVs in basically all conditions, never hit rails though to keep the edges fresh.
