Homemade wake skis...

So I decided to make some twintip water skis the other day and ended up with these. I pretty much based the construction on nations wakeski. They are 130cm long and 210 mm wide. The bindings are Hyperlite wakeboard bindings.I want to make another pair so feel free to make suggestions or anything else.

be sure to get a vid up on how well they work

i'd think it'd be difficult with such a wide underfoot
 
I used them for the first time today, they rode pretty well, didn't really hit the wake too hard so I can't say how they handled it.
 
wow, if i had cash i would buy some fo sho. i love wakeboarding but i love skiing more.
 
yeah dude, those are sick if you didnt say they were homemade i would have thought a company made them, crazy cool graphics and they look like they are well constructed too. nice work man.
 
sick but they already make those but they dont have tips like that do they curve up coz it doesnt look like it props for makin them
 
sweet for sure man, I think this is what i'll be doin this summer also rather than spend the 600 bucks they're asking for real ones.
 
looks sick the only thing i would be worried about with wakeboard bindings is that it would angle you to far forward casue there not meant to be forward like that but other than that they look amazing!!!
 
Alright, so I've got quite a few pms and such asking me to describe how I made them. So here goes.

I started with wood 2x4s (would like to try fiberglass as well) and planed them to 1/2 inch thick. Each board was cut to 2 inches wide and 130cm long. They were then submerged in water for one day to allow them to be shaped. I had previously made a jig out of 2x6s and 3/4 inch dowles in the shape I wanted the skis (the rise in the tips/tail, and the rocker). After soaking in the water, I placed them in the jig (which shaped them) and let them dry for one day. Since I used three strips of wood for each ski, I had to drill holes in them so they could be dowled. Next I put gorilla glue in the dowle holes and along each strip of wood. I put them together and clamped them in place for one day. After the glue dried, I cut the final shape of the skis (what can be seen in the pics) using a bandsaw. Then I sanded them until they were smooth. To mount the bindings I drilled four holes in the actual binding plate and then drilled these holes in the skis. I'm not sure what they are called, but in the base of the ski I inserted these x shaped metal columns which the screws go into. I put two coats of marine varnish on them, and then painted the graphics on them. After the paint was dry, I added two more coats of varnish. After everything was dry, I screwed on the bindings and was finished!

I know it is prolly confusing, but I tried my best to explain the process. If anyone would like more specific pics or description, just let me know. I will be glad to help you guys out.
 
thanks that will be a big help, also do ya know the benefit of that dovetail front and back as compared to rounded like a snow ski?? Did the metal x you screwed the bindings into come with them??
 
I have no idea about the dovetail, it does look pretty cool though. As far as the x, they didn't come with the bindings. They have an "x" plate, and then a shaft which holds the screw ontop of the plate. I wish I knew their name.
 
Wouldn't it be easier with different bindings? Like snowboard binding wouldn't work on skis because there isn't eneough front/back support
 
no shaping to the bottom at all or fins. that must be weird. I've skied slick trick skis before and i don't see how you could make a fast enough cut to hit the wake.
 
I'm nowhere near good enough to do 360s, and in response to the akward feeling, I do plan on adding fins to make them more stable.
 
dude, taht is soo sick, ive been trying to get some like that for mad long, we have a boat but im sick of not being able to ski switch or spin

how do they ride?
