Hey guys, there's something in skiing that needs to change...

As someone who loves skiing, I love every aspect of skiing. That includes park, powder, moguls, aerials, ect. You have to respect every single person that attaches a pair of slippery sticks to a pair of ridiculous boots and starts going down hill on snow, no matter how they choose to do that. However, there's one particular group of skiers that isn't getting the respect they deserve, and that's female skiers. I see a video get posted, it gets a ton of views, it's really popular, it features an awesome chick skiing and I think "awesome, a chick is finally getting some respect." But then I read the comments, and it's filled with two things: hate and requests for sexual favors. So what does this girl do, eventually she stops posting her content, she shys away from the internet skiing community, and resorts to only posting her videos on Vimeo with the comments turned off. Now if this only happened once, sure, maybe she just can't handle the hate, I mean tons of people get hate on this site (although they shouldn't either, but that's another topic for another day). But this happens CONSTANTLY. Since becoming a mod I'm constantly getting requests to have comments deleted that are sexually abusive and demeaning to women, I'm noticing it more and more. And that absolutely FUCKED up part...these are hot chicks who FUCKING SKI!!! Some of them even better than you. These are girls you could potentially hang out with on the slopes and have a good time with. But instead, we hate on them and call them a slut and ask them to show their tits. Not only do you make her feel bad, but you make yourself look like an ass AND you ruin it for everyone else.

TL;DR: Stop ruining skiing for girls. Grow the fuck up. Start treating girls with the respect they deserve and be stoked that they enjoy the same sport as you.

Also FYI: Any negative shit without backing it up with reason and/or sexism/chauvinistic shit will be promptly deleted and met with a ban (and not just in this thread). Seriously, grow up.

Seconded. There's not really any reason for the inappropriate actions. I would state "If you wouldn't say it to her face, don't comment it online," but I know that something like that isn't even possible.

Newschoolers, be leaders for tomorrow! We can do this!

This issue lies far deeper in the young male psyche than "OPs mom" jokes. It will never change. You can censor it but that is merely a bandaid. Guys have always, and will always, holler at girls to dump em out.

Start putting down people who do that if you don't already? Or maybe just offer positive reinforcement and ignore the dumb comments?

does this apply to other mods as well?

How many more of these threads do we need in order for people to finally get it? I understand that, at times, the maturity on this site can get out of hand, but there's a huge difference between trolling threads and blatantly hating on other skiers.

I don't think enough people realize the impact that comments have on here. There's not too many sites like this one out there so when a person puts all they got in an edit and the first 5 comments are shitty, it carries a lot of weight.

So next time you're trying to be funny or sarcastic on someones video, just remember that they put a lot of work into it and are just as stoked on skiing as you are.

Well that needed to be said. Most of the time I'm like WTF?!?! Don't you fools like having chicks around cuz you're doing nothing to encourage them to hang around.

When I have time I will elaborate on this but for now, focus on enriching our community instead of putting people down.

In my experience, when I was first starting to post in ski gabber, my knowledge or even thoughts on a subject were quickly denounced due to the fact I'm female. It made me stay away from that part of the site until I had tougher skin.

That being said, as a community we need to be nicer to everyone. Instead of OP YOU SUCK, we should be using the great resources this site has to help improve one another. This goes for everyone, not just boys to girls.

Honestly I think that this needs to change for not only women. The whole situation about a girl getting hated on who then stops posting is not one that only happens to girls. I'm 100% sure that there are just as many, if not more (because there are more male skiers) guys who have stopped posting their edits or been discouraged due to harsh comments.

Its hurts everyone in the skiing community, so just stop it.

I will admit now Maude Raymond skis and has way better style than I ever will. And thats probably the the same for a bunch of you guys out there, just to scared to admit it.

You bet your ass it does. This topic has been under discussion for some time now.

Funny you'd mention Katrina...but seriously, that's not the point at all.

WIFE EM' BOYS. But seriously thanks Bwalm, the ladies appreciate it.

We don't want to be put on a fucking pedestal, but jeez treat us equally.

I want to be recognized for sending it as a women just as much as you guys do as men.

This is a huge point. But, it's obviously more apparent on women's content. You literally can not find an edit (good or bad) without some comment saying something like "women's skiing sucks" or "show your tits." It is possible to find guy edits without 1 single negative comment...it happens all the time.

The biggest key to changing this is community interaction. WE, as a ski community, need to take charge of this and let it be known that it's NOT ok to hate anymore.

Pretty much this. The site is full of tweens who have no idea how to talk to a woman, let alone a girl.

Believe it or not, the average age of users on this site is 21-24...this also the average age for the people who apparently have no idea how to talk to women.

The issue is sexism on this site baffles me. When I created tge NSG thread "emma watson on feminsm". Some of the blatent sexist comments sickened me. However i'll be the first to admit im not the biggest fan of female skiing. If a chicks video is high rated on NS illwatch it but i wont go out if my way to find an edit of a chick skiing. Freeskiing has a very large gender skill gap and that all woman freeskiing film was pretty much empty at IF3. (Don't even know the name how sad). I think newschoolers can lead the way in encouraging woman freeskiing with more positive threads about woman freeskiing and being more welconing.

NS has only had only one female MOTM even though they have every oppurnity to partake in NS they choosenot to because NS can be very hostile towards woman.

COME ON NS WE CAN DO IT.More threads about woman, more upvotes on a chicks edit and less sexist comments when a female posts.

She's even more than purple now...look closely at her profile.

I feel like I don't see this that much...? Maybe I'm just getting to videos after the negative shit is deleted but usually it's comments like "fuck yeah, etc..."

How is that any different than hating on let's say.. Brett Fisher? It's all the same, hating on any skier is the same as hating on a girl skier. You just shouldn't hate on anyone lol. But that will never happen

As far as I know, no one has told Brett fisher to show his dick and prove his worth.

The difference is the sexual context that is used when males attack females.

I think this should be addressed to everyone in a sense. I post my edits thinking at least a few people will like it but usually just gets a few comments saying I suck. We all need to remember we are all here for the common purpose of skiing not putting people down even if you are joking.

I totally agree! It's not just about ladies, it's about creating a more welcoming community as a whole. Everyone starts somewhere!

I disagree. Females can have 'balls.' Most just don't.. It's not that they suck at skiing and should be ridiculed for it, they just don't have metaphorical balls

Even if that is true (which it's bullshit, but whatever), that's still no excuse to call them what they get called or talk to them like trash.

has the fact that problem is more of a newschooler demographic problem than other ski forums w/ a older demographic or skiing as a whole?

because i really don't see it irl on the mountain in the bc or much outside of this place.

WAY different. Look at the comments on this video -
https://www.newschoolers.com/membervideo/718227.0/katrina-s--sexualwednesday-vol--3?s=114786&t=6&o=8

Note, these have already been cleaned up some.

Its shit like this:

"honestly, if I ever have a girl, I hope she has the dignity to not reveal herself to a bunch of kids on NS for higher views.

Cool your pretty, learn to ski switch and spin right! Let me know what your parents think of this video...."

I mean give me a fucking break. There's plenty of others in there too, and you can find this shit everywhere there are girls posting. Its misogynistic bullshit.

You can hate on something without being a total ass. Its not hard to be a bit witty, come up with some criticisms and have a grand old time. Its teh spiteful, hateful shit that I think everyone is tiring of.

Sexism and " show your tits" comments are totally and abhorrently wrong, but as an average nobody, this seems like NS wants to follow the politically correct trend of "affirmative action" towards women's opportunities. The beauty of a site like this is that you can call it how it is, as long as the comments are extremely outlandish and obscene. If I see a chicks edit, and it was awful, I will probably say it sucked. I'm happy that they are putting themselves out there and they are partaking in the great sport of skiing. But the skill gap is there and no matter how you want to look at it, a majority of girl skiers aren't going to be as good as a majority of guy skiers. Just call it how it is. Don't sugar coat things to make them feel better. The stoke is still there, but you don't have to feel obligated not to speak your mind.

How much do you hate me right now?

Not an excuse or justification for that at all bro. I never have done it, and I never will. I have respect..

devils advocate here for a second.. even though i stand for everything in this post. even put one up similar to this and got flamed for it :/

-- shouldnt she .. maybe not be calling it sexual wednesday? and showing a set of breast in the videos? i mean this is food for the children on this website.

Its so fucked how people treat girl skiers, and like BWalmer said there all fucking hot as shit (Coming from my home mountain Whistler Blackcomb) its like most of the NS community still believes in cooties

So when a girl PMs me and says that she was offended by what has been said to her in the comments section of her own video (and not because of her skill even, not that it should matter), I'm supposed to say "Well that's NS for ya." FUCK THAT! Not one person on this site should feel offended by what has been said to them personally. Just because you live miles away and will probably never see this person in real life do NOT give you the right to hide behind your anonymity and call girls obscene names or request sexual favors, it's fucking gross and there's literally no need for it. Seriously, why even write the comment? Cause it's funny? That's called being a fucking bully, and just because it was said on the internet doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. You realize there ARE female skiers who have personally told me that they will not post videos or pictures on this website simply because they are afraid to be called a whore...seriously, that's awful. You're literally taking a part of skiing and ski culture away from them.

And I don't hate you, but I certainly don't want to meet you in person...but that's not new.

This is what's wrong here, you shouldn't have to avoid something just because it might antagonize shitty people. She doesn't deserve hate because she did something provocative. When you tell someone not to do something because it might provoke shitty people, you are saying that shitty people are here to stay and we need to adapt to them, when instead we can try and get rid of them.

Hopefully my point is clear, it's not always easy to express yourself on a forum.

yea, we can't get it all, but hopefully the site can be brought towards the right direction (although I'm convinced that most of the headache is formed from a very small minority of NS'ers)
