mommy, by posting this you have made yourself come across as even a bigger moron. You obviously don’t know anything about music, which means you opinion doesn’t even matter. In fact the only reason you post dumb shit is because you feel safe and secure sitting behind your monitor. But if you knew anything about guitarists or music, you would know how intricate and complex his music is and how superior his skill as a guitarist far exceeds anyone by any standards. Maybe you don’t like his style, but you have to give him respect for how great he was at what he did. Any musician, or for that matter anyone who has any appreciation for music knows what an astonishing guitarist Jimmy Hendrix was.

ease up. during his time, hendrix was the shit. now, sooooo many better people than him. i mean, ive been playing for around 5 years and im almost as good as he was. but when he was around he was pretty damn good. and who do you consider the best guitarist of all time?

A couple points. Someone said they're almost as good as Hendrix? Doubtful, playing his songs doesn't make you as good as him...writing song as good does. Hendrix not good by todays standards? Ridiculous, he's still amazing...just because some jackass can play 3000 nots a minute doesn't make him better, it makes him faster. Whatever, in the end it's what you like. If you don't like Hendrix, thats cool. If you do, rock on. But coming on a forum and saying all these idiotic points is stupid. Go skiing or something...

you are an idiot man, Jimi was so creative man. He had shit that no one had ever heard of back then. He played his shit against all odds when the press and a lot of people hated him. He had half to country following him. You try playing a guitar with your fucking teeth. Jimi in a pepsi commercial no thats like his grandson. And I bet you Jimi if he was still alive would have never let that happen. So if you think Hendrix was like a commercial. You try making 8 million people following you around a country at the age of fucking 21-27. And to add to that, there wasn't a black guitarist that made such a large impact on music. Now, how the hell can you say he sucks when riffs of songs such as 'Purple Haze' are the soul and have full influence in many of today's and previous generation's music. If you play the guitar you would see that his riffs are way different than any other riffs. And most people nowadays are not even half of what Jimi was and what still is. So you make millions of people support you, you become a legend, you play with your fucking teeth, you start a new generation of rock. And then comment on how you think Jimi Hendrix sucks but until then learn some shit before you talk.

jab900, your right but only half right, not only did hendrix start a new generation of rock, he himself ended it and began a new one that never kicked off in the last year of his life, there are alot more than just one jimi, theres jimi playing blues in the army in the south, theres jimi playing dance clubs as lead guitarist for other headliners in new york, theres jimi with the experience, and then jimi post experience which was a totally new wave past what caught on in the mainstream but was so incredibly musical that no one else could ever reach it, if you can get your hands on a copy, watch blue wild angel on dvd, that was his last concert ever, that was jimi at his best, and if he had lived he would have only got better, its not the best sounding shit no, but when you watch him play you cannot deny when he plays a guitar its not just a man playing a guitar, its something much much deeper, then listen to the rainbow bridge concert or the band of gypsies sessions, holy shit man, if anyone says they are 'as good as hendrix' there a fucking idiot, listen to machine gun, you cannot not play a guitar like that, no one on earth at this time can, and if anyone doubts his talent as a songwriter, listen to pali gap, anyone that doubts his talent as a technical guitar player, villanova junction, and as a musician listen to the last set of woodstock, and try to keep your jaw from dropping, then read all the info you can find on hendrix and if you can still say he sucked, your a fuckin tool, and if you want some crazy hardcore shit, the stars that played with laughing sams dice, thats a pretty sick song too

Ok, I didn't read the other posts, but I'll go right ahead and explain to Mommy why Hendrix is so good. You can't just take a studio recording of a song and state that if it doesen't blow you away it's not good. Dig in to live material. Listen to his amazing ALL IMPROVISED SOLOS. What is crazy about Jimi was that at any given time (without LSD) he could visualise any chord, any scale, any mode on his guitar without knowing the theory or what exactly he was playing. That is he could enter a state of mind that would tell him exactly what to play, where. Of course, I'm talking about his live performances. Obviously, out of his improv solos he would write structured songs where he knew exactly what he was playing.

That's where Hendrix is different. Most professional guitarists will, when it comes to improvising a solo, analyse the backround chords (determine the key), then deduce what scales they can use depending on the tone. After that, they'll simply whip out a scale or mode(sort of scale), rearrange, slide, bend and alternate it in a sometime amazing way to create something that sounds cool.

What Hendrix did is immediately know what to play simply by the sounds that entered his head. You could play the most atonal and out of key arrangement of fucked up chords ever (9ths, 11ths, 13ths, augmented, diminished, suspended, combination of, etc), and solo amazingly over it.

How many guitarists could do that? Of course, you can't say by listening to a studio recording. But did you ever see Jimi play live? Sure, some guitarists are more technical and can pull flashier and more technical stuff. If Jimi chose to sometime use traditional chord progressions in his song, maybe it's because it sounded better, and that most people buy CDs for the overall song of the record, not for a guitarist doing a million solos, however good.

Not only that, there is also Hendrix's influence over the music world. But you already know that. What I just said is why I think Hendrix is a guitar god (I did say guitar).

a lot of people dont look at things in the proper context. Guitar work has progressed a ton in the past 30 or so years...but Jimmi was one of them who started that progression. Up until that point, nobody had even tried to put to string the shit he was playing.

There is no doubt that he has equals in modern day guitar, but without him starting it there is a good chance it wouldnt be where it is today.
 
In that link, what the guys playin is based around a #9 chord. AKA the Hendrix chord. No hendrix isnt the most technically proficient player, hes lauded instead for his influence and progression. If it wasnt for hendrix, guys like the dude in the link would be nowhere.

Half of you on here, have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I'm not a hendrix expert, but both arguments are right, and both arguments are wrong, so read this post.

In a sense, Hendrix was a horrible guitarist. He didn't play guitar like ANYONE ELSE. He did not do what every one else did, so he inveted his own way. And that's why he's so amazing. There can NEVER be another Hendrix, because he set up his guitar specifically for his taste. Other people may be able to play the same songs, and hit the same notes, but they can't do it the way he did.

I don't think that race had anything to do with it though. being black did not help, or hurt his ablity to play.

All along the watchtower is a sweet song. I think that although his music doesn't seem that special today, back in the day it was way ahead of it's time.
