Every time I read something from the Denver post, I think to myself, 'This guy has no idea what he's talking about'. Nothing without the Xgames? To hell with the Xgames. They do us more harm than good, catering to people who know nothing about skiing... progression of the sport my ass, when you have a glorified high jump event for 'superpipe' just because the 110 million folks at home don't know hucked from smooth, you're not progressing the sport. No sport should have to cater to its audience, and yet the judges lean a certain way based on what they think the majority of their viewers want. So don't give me this 'we need the X-games' crap, because I neither need it nor want it. You talk about Tanner misrepresenting the sport? As far as I'm concerned, the way the X-games portray us is worse.
As for the interview, you ask a stupid question, you get a stupid answer. Hell, Gagnier was at a loss when they interviewed him after slopestyle, too. I thought he was incredibly composed, considering what they were asking him. More to the point, I was impressed that he was able to control himself based on the sort of person he is. Tanner may represent the image we want people associating with the sport all of the time, but one thing he is is a competitor. He's extremely passionate about what he does, and that's part, I'm sure, of what makes him the best. If I have to choose between that competitive fire and a cool, composed tact in an interview by a fool for millions of people who know nothing about skiing sitting around in their living rooms saying 'WOW, look how HIGH that little guy went', it's really not a tough choice.
One more thing... Tanner isn't paid to represent the sport. He's paid to represent his sponsors, most notably Armada. He IS Armada. Because of that, he is accountable to no one. Maybe you'd prefer someone else as our icon, and I could think of a few other people I'd choose in that capacity, as well, but he's under no obligation to change the way he looks at the sport, nor the person he is, just because some exec at ESPN decided this was the guy to keep the cameras pointed at all night long.
I have so much more to say about this that it bothers me to cut this post short, but I've had enough. The Denver post needs to stop publishing sensationalist articles to get kids on here riled up and to spark industry drama. 'Racer poise'? Acting like a 10 year old? Sounds to me like the only one flinging hate around is Willoughby, and that's about as foolish and immature as anything. If condescending, thinly veiled trash talk is 'racer poise', then I want no truck with racing. However, that's not the case. Some racers are complete jackasses, some are great guys, and so it goes with every sport, or profession; case in point, while some writers are down to earth, cool guys, this one just happens to be an arrogant, self-important joke. We're all skiers, stop worrying about some guy who won a bunch of comps who you'll never meet, quit the hating, and ride the way you want to.
