It's pretty absurd that in this day and age there is such an emphasis on social media and "cultivating" ourselves for public consumption. I understand that Gus is a public figure and is under more scrutiny than most of us here, but that doesn't really get to the heart of the matter. Gus said it himself. He's insecure. Well, that's pretty obvious. I think there is an inherently vain and attention seeking undercurrent to this, and it's totally on Gus in this particular situation, but he's also clearly a product of the times and of the culture. And, I think it's sad and pretty lame. Gus is an amazing skier and has some unreal accomplishments under his belt, there's just absolutely no need to exaggerate any of it in such a way. Like, watch the guy land tricks from the Oslo big air. Why on earth would he feel the need to "lie" about his skiing? Well, he already answered that himself.
The second thing though is this: I really respect someone being willing to flat own up to their mistake. Gotta be a very embarrassing situation for Gus, though it was self-created. But that aside, it still takes balls to just come out and say, "hey.....I fucked up....and I am an insecure person". It's incredible how these situations can sort of resolve themselves when someone is just like, "yeah....about that.....sorry.....".
If I was good friends with Gus, I would look him dead in the face and say, "You know what man? No one is more concerned about what you're doing or not doing than you. People are wrapped up in their own lives. You are giving everyone else so much power in determining your moment to moment happiness and sense of worth, and it's ridiculous. You're a good person, you're a fucking ripping skier, and despite those things, you're a FLAWED, IMPERFECT human being. Big fucking deal. You don't need to bend over backwards to impress anyone, or to control how you're perceived. Just take it easy man."
