Great Gus, thanks for the apology! Really does change the fact that you photoshopped yourself skiing, and did it with the knowing intention of it being lame. Indeed, we all make mistakes, but you can't put the scapegoat in a situation like this on your social media followers. Can't really call that "owning up to it". For somebody who is a figurehead of the sport, you can't allow things like this to happen, regardless of who you're trying to impress.
As stated on the previous page, is this skiing in 2016? Photoshop and CGI, such as what we saw in OOTD3? I think all of it sets a wrong image for this community as a whole

There's a lot to this, and everyone who is trying to simplify the factors is missing the boat.
Ultimately, it takes a lot of personal courage and strength to be a public figure doing things that are somehow "counter" to mainstream society. Sure, there are plenty of people (I'd call myself one) who support the moves that Kenworthy has made and want to see inclusiveness and diversity in the elite athlete population as we want to see those benefits in our society as a whole.
But as anyone who has ever gotten a mixture of love and criticism can tell you, the harsh shit seems to stand taller, even if it's the vast majority. A lot of people, skiers and not, don't respect his moves or who he is. It takes a very thick skin to slough the bullshit off, creatively handle the haters, and forge ahead in your own direction. It takes time to develop that kind of confidence--it certainly doesn't happen overnight.
Worse, there's very little precedent for how to come out on a national stage. And enduring personal attack when it's literally your job to appeal to and inspire people to purchase the products you promote is a conflicting set of feelings.
I mean, would Kenworthy have had to say these things had he not been called out? Maybe not.
But the bigger point of all of this is, at a deeper level, what he's trying to do is hard. It's a serious struggle to share who you are at a large level and keep it genuine and fresh. Anyone who has struggled with squaring who they are with the society around them can, and should empathize. That's not a blank check to make misleading or idiot moves. However, it's important to keep episodes like this in context: this is but one tree in a much larger forest.

My psychological analysis:
In our industry, photo shopping a picture is definitely taboo. However, for all those nsers who view pro skiers as unreachable god-like enigmas, this situation proves that Gus is like you, and everyone else. He's human and cares what what his peers think. He values your opinion and wants to exemplify himself as an top level skier. Maybe he felt that his recent spotlight was on his sexual orientation rather than his talent, which is the reason people follow him in the first place... Prompting him to post a shopped picture.
God knows all of you, and especially the girls, spend a long time editing pictures before you post them. People work on their photos in hopes of getting the best reaction possible. The mindset is exactly the same in my opinion.
Do I condone the Photoshop? No.
I'm sure he would have gotten just as many likes from the original. However, can you blame someone for doing something like this when the majority of his recent fame is from something so incredibly personal that it overshadows real talent?
I'm sure that could drive someone to do crazy stuff.
