Im going to be a freshman next year in college and i guess its time to start planning some shit since i wont have any time this summer. So just post what you brought, things you with you brought, anything to get used to living in a dorm. anything else you might think of.Im absolutly pumped to finally get out of my house and live on my own so i wanna make sure i do it right.

make sure you have a microwave to make food when the dining hall is closed and all you have is ramen. and that one of you or your roommate has a fridge for tons of beer. and you need a tv. thats pretty much all you need. you can add shit in when you figure out your living arrangements; you should definitely consider bunking beds, as gay as it is, you have so much more space. i pretty much have a couch, futon, 2 tvs, 3 fridges, a microwave, playstation, xbox, stereo, between me and my roommates. we lucked out in our place though. maybe suggest getting some kind of collapsible table to play pong? you really don't need much. just make it comfortable.

microwave and fridge are essential. As is a hotplate and a pot if you can get away with it. Ummm get a couch/futon if your dorm doesn't come with one. The biggest change I think from high school to college is how much down time you have. You will only have a few classes a day and it can get really boring sometimes, but also it can be really testing to learn how to manage your time.

Don't worry about it, not much you need besides a fridge, microwave, bed, and your room comes with all that if you're doing the dorm thing to start out. Just bring whatever you feel like.

even better is to get a loft, you have tonnnns of room. i actually really like my dorm setup this year, its amazing. I'll post up some pics.

Our room is pretty sweet, always a good place to chill in. Def get a TV, stereo and some sort of video game system too like ^^^ he said

Dont get a huge meal plan, on campus food sucks (probably)

feather bed to put on top of shitty matress is fucking amazing

lots of spiral notebooks

def need a laptop

garbage bags, and maybe even your own garbage can

scissors tape and staplers... you will use them

shower sandals

silverware so you dont have to steal it from the cafeteria

some bowls and plates are nice, its better to wash shit then to have to constantly buy paper plates etc

coat hangers

towel rack

pencil sharpener

small fan, your room might get really hot

highlighters

a nice leather shower bag thing, I hate those stupid totes

surge protectors

mini fridge

Those are some of my suggestions, you should have a lot of fun~

yea that had some real good things you need, but aren't like main things you'd think of. i have like 10 surge things for no reason, but like 5 are filled up. garbage cans definitely. and you need to get black bags, white ones are see-through and you might get in trouble if they see cans (i'm not sure about that, but if i get in trouble again i might get suspended so i'm not taking chances anymore).

yea my room is real dope now, but it was better when i had a 6ft table for pong. i left it out friday morning and they did a room inspection and took it with some beer. more or less, we ball outrageous. haha

A lot of what the previous people said. and also...

A desk lamp in case you need more light.

Paybe a printer. you will prob have to pay to print at the library. paper and ink

An area rug, the hard floors suck, and a rug keeps its warmer.

Some bottles of water, easy to have for class or just around

iPod or preferred music player for when relaxing or walking to class

Head phones (included in iPod) good for when room mate is asleep or watching something else.

Rain coat usually for rain, sitting wet in class is not fun.

Plenty of socks

Hamper bag thing, easy for carrying your laundry around

Enough blankets to keep warm if something happens in the winter and there is no heat

Calender to jot down important dates

chargers for phone, computer, what ever else

Sweat pants and gym shorts

Frisbee or soccer ball

yea, what eric said is really good. an area rug is a necessity. printer is real key, but i don't have one and i manage (i use my friends upstairs and next door, but its just easier with your own). something else he said was good, but i forgot. if i had pictures that didn't show me shitfaced making the most retarded faces, i'd post them. i probably will later because southpark isn't for another 90 minutes.

Right after you move in pitch in for a futon, youll end up having a lot more girls chill in your room and you can always fold it out into a bed.

fuck futons. They suck ass. After about a month of sitting on them the mattress gets all squished and you feel the bars every time you sit down. Seriously, don't get one. Just find an old loveseat or something you can get for cheap.

Fuck dishes. Paper plates are like 5 dollars for 300 of them. It'll last you most, if not all of the year. Plastic silverware is also super cheap. My roommate and I have a regular kitchen and we don't even do dishes because its so much easier and not too expensive to just buy disposable stuff. Dishes especially suck in the dorms if you don't have a bathroom or sink and you need to walk down the hall to do them.

Toaster ovens are nice. You probably aren't allowed to have them. Not that it matters, you'll probably do plenty of stuff you aren't allowed to do.

Duct tape.

wow, quite a solid thread. thanks guys.

haha, i love the new karma system! i just went through and boosted everyone who was helpful

How about a

multi-plug cable for a power outlet

extension cords

small lock box or something to keep valuables in

suction hooks

posters

small dry erase board to hang on a wall

portable first aid kit

umbrella

Yeah anything comfortable to sit on is really inviting, helps for parties, and meeting new people especially freshman year.

Besides the obvious stuff, here is some more little stuff you might forget(Some probably already been said)

Scissors

Pictures/Posters

Clock

GOOD Garbage Can

Cinder blocks if you wanna loft for cheap

Laundry basket

Stapler

Slippers

All the electronics (cords, chargers, adapters, etc.)

Fan

Dish soap

Tylenol, etc.

Sleeping pills (I just got a few from my dad, really nice when you need to fall asleep fast and it's loud or something)

Desk lamp

Water bottle

check salvation armies on the way up for furniture mad cheap. RUG. the floors are so shitty after showering.

we call our room the chill zone kinda a big long joke of ours but its pretty tight

Whose O Chem book? I got the same one. Everyone hates that class, but strangely I kinda like it...

That's mine. They use that book for the advanced orgo class here. I really like the class actually, its just a lot of work.

Oh, I'm in O Chem 1. Ya it is definitely a shitload of work but kinda interesting. We've been doing IR and NMR in lab, sweet stuff. What are you majoring in?

Real dope thread. I am getting really excited for this fall when I head off to college. A little bit nervous too...

duct tape and a knife or a box cutter.

DONT bring too much stuff. think about wether or not you'll wear all the clothes you packed. you may in the first couple months but when the winter rolls around you just sit around in sweatpants and gym shorts all day long. Its about that time that you realize you brought too much shit and now you have to start bringing it home.

Dryer sheets. They cover the smell of anything. throw them in your roomates shoes while hes sleeping. and put them behind fans and the room will smell good for a while. i gotta try that plant thing though i never thought of that.

I need help with this too. I am going to bring:

2 pillows

Soft mattress (about 2"x7'x2")

Small minifridge

laptop+ all cords n shit

All ma clothes

Zune

Microwave

Guitar amp (2 1/2'x2'x1')

I guess books n things

headphones

own comforter + 2 blankets

Guitar

Multiplug (socket thingy)

Assuming I go to the U of Utah, Will I have enough Room????

hahahah you can't imagine how hard I laughed at this post when I read it. Another time NS made my entire class look at me like i'm retarded.

Good suggestions all around. I'm keepin this thread in mind when summer rolls around and I really have to start thinking about all this crap. I'm unbelievably excited for college though.

Well, here's all you need to know. Classes: nothing before eleven. Beer: it's your best friend, you drink a lot. Women? You're a freshman, so it's pretty much out of the question. Will you have a car?

Someone on your floor will. Find them and make friends with them on the first day.

have you seen the dorms at your college yet? If you haven't you'll probably be disappointed. You can make a great dorm but it takes a lot of rearranging. everyone has said it but i'll repeat anyways, bring a microwave and fridge. super important and necessary. depending on how far away you live from the school you might want to bring less than you think you'll need since you can always go back for more if you live close.
