Guide for incoming college freshman

nah man they are sooo sturdy, they are made out of like 4"x4" pieces of wood and are wedged against the walls, they can take tons of weight and stress.

NOOOTTTTT

whats with you sucking the greek systems balls man. im fine with people being in it or supporting it but you keep trying to force your opinions on other people.

Wow you are such a prick, please stop posting, you are giving frats a bad name. You make a completely false generalization that people who choose not to join an institution such as a frat are worthless? That doesn't even make sense, you are basing that off absolutely nothing. Then you go on to use a silly moniker such as GDI. You realize this make you look like a complete retard when you ask others not to make similar generalizations about the frat community (which while being false, have more validity than independents being worthless). Anyways god forbid someone choose a more independent route in college. In any event, joining a frat is still worth considering, you don't necessarily have to be in a house with people like skogenjake, it can be a great institution and might be right for you.

get a good smelling candle and a candle warmer. it doesn't leave smoke like incense or a lit candle and it last way longer than febreeze. it's kind of gay, but your room will smell nasty if you don't get something.

go to wal mart and get those stackable plastic storage drawers things theyre super cheap and you can keep anything in them. get a brita cause bottled water just gets annoying when you run out and everything becomes expensive in college cause you end up wasting all your money on getting wasted. only ask for money for the rest of your birthdays/holidays fucked up. dont worry about condoms, every school just hands them out like candy on halloween. duct tape is essential. get chrome duct tape its sick. desk lamps. emergen C and cough medicine cause youre gonna be around a shitload of people and youre bound to get sick. shower shoes cause dorm bathrooms are grimey and gross. tv, a rug, seating. if you dont have any kind of chairs, people just wont come in your room. get a sweet set of speakers and good music cause nobody likes shitty tunes. everyone else has pretty sweet suggestions. keep on keepin on.

Towels. For girls, I HIGHLY reccommend you get those towels with elastic and velcro at the top that wrap around like a tube dress. They make it so much easier.

Shower sandals.

An over-the-door metal towel rack. Guys never have a place to dry their towels so they always smell mildewy and damp. Which in turn makes your whole room smell.

Lysol anti-bacterial wipes. SOMEONE is going to be sick in your dorm ALL THE TIME. These are really good to have on hand to wipe down your computer, door knobs, whatever.

I wouldn't worry too much about utensils. You'll end up throwing away all of your plates and forks once a month anyway, due to food being crusted on them. I say you steal them from the dining hall.

You'll probably start hanging EVERYTHING. Get one of those sweater holders (vertically stacked cubbies made out of canvas usually) for your closet and either keep sweatshirts or jeans in them.Or shirts. Super space saving.

When I came to school, I flew from California. I brought 2 suitcases with clothes, some pictures and some stuff I couldn't live without. And my skis. Everything else, I bought there or totally forgot about. I had never heard of a hot pot, crock pot, hot plate or George Foreman until college. If I lived without them for 18 years, I can live without them forever, you know?

But my main advice is to get involved on campus right away. Find out what outdoor trips your recreation program offers. Get involved with student groups. I guarantee your campus has everything from service groups to ultimate frisbee. Find your ski club asap!!!!!

I think you should consider rushing because even if you choose not to go Greek, you'll have a reason why and will have made some friends along the way. I really value my experience within the Greek system because A. its really fun and B. its really taught me a lot about tradition, ritual, respect, integrity, and loyalty. I was given a Vice President position my first year in the house and that taught me so so so much about workloads, networking, Public Relations, Philanthropy, et cetera. Its a great way to get involved and to expand your skill set.

CLIFF NOTES: My advice: get involved so you're not bored (and your resume starts building). Keep your dorm room door open if you can so people can poke their heads in and say hey. Don't but the all-inclusive-I-eat-913280982302397-Calories-a-day meal plan; you'll want to eat off campus too. The Freshman 15 is just a myth; learn how to eat right and you'll be fine. Go to the gym to work out and meet people. Don't stick with just one group of friends. Wikipedia is not a legit academic source; use it but don't cite it. Keep an open mind to all people, courses, and experiences. Go to games. Figure out exactly how many 40s you can drink during the SuperBowl. Participate in school traditions (homecoming, Forester's Ball, MaggotFest...).

College is the first time you'll be able to choose what classes you want to take and really do what's interesting to you. Don't let that stick to the classroom. Find things you're interested in and follow them. If you want to learn to kayak, figure out a way to do it. College is all about having fun and getting an education. "Never let schooling interfere with your education."-Mark Twain.

HAVE FUN!

don't dismiss greek life and don't feel like you haveta check it out. its all personal feelings, if there are chill people in a fraternity, they'll understand if greek life isnt for you and won't hold it against you.... its those " if you dont pledge we wont hang out " people taht i fucking hate. during "rush " my freshman year all the people telling me to pledge here and there and shit just turned me off greek life so quickly. when they stopped askin, and everyone was just chill friends, then i decided they werent hanging out with me just to get another pledge, so then i joined up. its all about makin friends, thats all freshman year is. and you meet so many different people that you can go whichever direction you want.

as for stuff to bring... steal all your silverware / bowls / plates / cups from the cafeteria. if you dont wanna wash em you can even bring them back dirty / throw them out, and steal new ones. more than one pillow. plenty of ski mags to cover your wall with pages. and lots of easy mac haha.

Really good thread. And whoever said duct tape..sooo right. I dunno if this's been mentioned but maybe batteries? I really have no idea, i still got a year to go..Sooooo stoked on that though.

man, when are you going to get over the frat vs. GDI thing? I think it has been proven in the past that people don't want to listen to your shit about frats, especially in the asshole manner in which you deliver it. Just chill out and realize everyone has different paths in life, some frat some not (notice how I didn't refer to anyone in a derogatory fashion - thats what we call being respectful and acting mature). Get over yourself and start the maturation process that is supposed to take place during college.

does anyone have any tips about hiding beer in your dorm room and how not to get caught drinking? Im going to the U of U to be specific if you want

you dont need to hide it in your room, just dont go out in the halls holdin a brewski haha. we drank all year in our room and we lived in chapel glen 804 right across from the housing president. they wont search your room unless you are being really loud and they can see something from the door.

make friends with people who live off campus within the first couple weeks, so you have a party hookup for the entire year... because eventually the doors close to groups of random freshmen (dudes) trying to show up at parties. Also a good idea because you'll realize that partying in dorm rooms gets old way to fast

Don't worry bout you drinkin in ther, worry bout others, cause their careless ass holes an you'll take tha fall

my friend walked into his dorm to like 4 people drinking an his RA was right behind him an he got tha college probation for it, fuckedddd

Bring at least a 30 rack of shitty beer and a 12 pack of a good microbrew. Throw a small party your first day. You can thank me later.

door stop so u can keep ur door open sometimes so ppl can walk in and out cause some schools once the door is closed its locked
