GLOBAL WARMING Poll

So i want to do a poll for my final project in Enivronmental Science on global warming affecting ski resorts. Can you just respond to this question for me. yes/no is a fine answer

Do you feel global warming is responsible for the negative effects we have seen in the ski industry in terms of snow coverage. If not, what is your explanation for the poor snow coverage in the past 5 years? obviously utah has done fairly well but im referring to the east coast and midwest and such. hwoever if utah has been hit by a snow problem let me know. thanks guys

Short answer:

Global warming doesnt nessicary mean everywhere on the planet gets warmer and less snow. It can actually cause some areas to recieve even more snow then normal.

Its great for some lucky regions and not so great for others.

yes for new york and southern new england but i think northern spots of vt,nh,and maine will see increase in snow because theres more moisture but warmer temps that are still cold enough for snow...

well if global warming melts the ice caps then the gulf of mexico is like knocked off course from scotland, i know alot more people will come to scotland to ski. And i will quit school and live up north.

hahaha oh WOW.

I dont think I have been alive long enough to judge this. Seasons differ every year. Particular locations receive differing conditions every year. I dont think anyone has done the research to even come close to making this decision. The responses you get here will be based on the past 1-10 years, and I dont think that is enough time to really see what is going on. In the end, we only have ~100 years of history to compare current climate conditions with... and i dont think that is enough time.

I hope your not using this poll for a serious publication.

Here in Tahoe we are getting later winters and people speculate that it's from global warming. We got 623 inches at Squaw this season but over 300 of those inches fell in March and April and we barely had any until January.

i was kidding, global warming has been proven by hundreds of scietists and only the super ignorent conservatives with thier head so far up thier asses that they have no ties to reality deny it.

Wow...yet another arrogant person on Newschoolers.

I don't know the 'lucky regions' though because I dont major in that field and I don't have the data.

The reason some areas will get more snow then before is the changing of the tempurature in the oceans currents. They drive the weather on the globe. So any change in the current means different weather and that could be drought in some areas and more percipitation in other.

word.

i have a two part answer: ryno is right by lowering the temp some places, such as coastal areas will recieve more rain because the temp will jump up just above freezing, and theyll get a bunch of rain cause of the increased evap off the ocean. inland areas will recieve much more snow because of the increased evap off the oceans that will create huge storm systems and because itll still be able to be below freezing to allow for snow. I worked in alaska looking at the flow rates of glaciers due to climate change and we could really see theses effects. the glaciers in the northern area were growing like mad, more then ever, while coastal glaciers around anchorage and juneau (where most are) were retreating extremly fast.

On another note so far global warming has only effected areas that were prviously RIGHT on the snow/rain border when storms move through. meaning whistler, the east coast poss some parts of cali depending on other factors such as the track of the jetstream and weather patterns such as el nino. the global temp has only risen 1-2 degrees since 1900 (not sure about that fact). its not that the temps are super warm or anything, but just warm enough to give rain and not snow, which not only doesnt build a resorts base but depletes it greatly. in the long run global warming prolly wont do that much to the ski industry (at least in our life times) for the most part all the areas being fucked over right now will continue being fucked over it most likely wont get too much worse except for the east coast cause more and more storms that are snow will turn into rain storms during the winter. but again it wont be to the point where resorts cant stay open for at least another 10 years.

no and my teacher made us watch a movie in science and they said we are about to go into another ice age(not in our lifetime but we are)

so enough of this global warming shit

but i do know that its ur project so yeah

i say no

so my answer is yes. compeltely. global warming has created el nino and la nina and effects the jet stream and any other storm in the world. it will create bigger storms which may be rain for coastal areas but will create amazing conditions for in land areas

it's just a cycle- were moving away from the ice age. so in about 500,000 years when the ice age comes around again there will be some sick skiing

ugh well i think a science video ould know but we arnt moving away from one...it all depends if the snow that is produced in areas doesnt melt completly in the summer...thats when the snow builds up and the atoms condesnse or whatever and turn into ice...and over many years shabamlamtam ICE AGE!!

yea dude, thats right too, the earth would be natrually be going into an ice age right now based on its cycle. but global warming has off set it. this hasnt been proven but its very likely that we arent feeling the true damage we are doing to the planet because the earth is trying to get colder. once the earth gets to the stage where it would be coming out of the ice age in maybe 8-20k years its gonna get really hot really fast. in that time you can forget about skiing period. there will likely not be snow anywhere south of northern canada and no snow north of southern south america. but thats a long time from now, so who the fuck cares right? fuckin republicans

1-2 degrees is huge on a global scale.

even .5 degrees is enough to change the ocean temps and therefore alter the weather.

Its nothing to worry about right now, its no "Day after tomorrow" sceneario but it IS happening no matter what you think.

I'm not using this poll for any statistical information just to get an idea from some skiers. It was interesting to see the california skiers say no, while east coast members say yes. Obviously it's a problem for each of us differently. That's what I am getting at in my paper. Those who rely on 28º days to keep the next week full of machine blown snow like us east coasters vs. those who have consistently cold days and natural snow.

ohh completely. 1-2 degrees in 100 years is crazy on a global scale. 100 years is nothing. and it does change shit a bunch but alot of people think that global warming means we will really notice a difference in the next few years. which for the most part isnt true. we are doing irreparable damage to the planet. but no one can just say right now that next year certain resorts will have a bad year. its still mainly up to the jetsteam and weather patterns that are in place

no its not skiing its the pollution, itd be crazy if the east coast got so much snow like colorado and mammoth and the West coast gets snow like Stuff on the east, that will start my thinking on Global warming

man global warming, if it was that hit us hard, valley didnt open for a extra month and lemi put it this way about marmot basin.

when you take you skis in to get tuned afer skiing there the shop tech knows to order more p-tex

Global warming is not the reason why ski resorts have had less snow in the past 5 years. Why? Well, because only about 1/2ish have had low snow in only 1 or 2 years of the past 5. Utah and Cali have gotten MAD snowfall, and open til june every year. Its all about el nino and la nina, ect. Just shitty weather patterns for east coast/mid west folk. My mini 2 cents.

this is stupid there is no way anyone can make an informed desision based on how the snow levels are.

Most of these people probably dont even understand the concept of global warming. And it should be noted that snow levels can greatly varry over the years having nothing to do with global warming i.e. droughts
