From A Real Christian's Perspective.

this will be a long read. but i ask you to read it. and read the whole thing before you post.

also, this is not a thread to preach to you, it is a thread so you may understand a few things.

95 percent of people on here rant and hate on christians. there are so many threads made on here making fun of, ridiculing, hating, and just bashing christians as much as possible. i mean really, you look at the comments made towards christians on here, and they are some of the worst. why is it only towards christianity that you show this hate towards? why not islam? buddhism? or any other religion. islamic people blow people up for their religions sake. but no one says the things towards them that you say towards christians.

that being said.

i also do not agree with a lot of the "christians" your stories are about, or start off about. being a real christian, you will not go around stating, "God hates fags", or anything from that westborough church, street preachers yelling out "turn or burn!", that guy setting an end date to the world, or any of that. not biblical whatsoever.

i dont know the statistics of it, but i would go as far to say that at least 65 percent of people that go to any denomination church are not christians. they are simply people that go to feel good, or to make their parents or spouse happy, and then go back to partying, drugs or living their life how they want to. also, most people that call themselves "christians" do not even go to church. what i'm getting at, is a lot of "christians" arent christians at all.

i grew up in a christian home. went to church every sunday, and to wednesday night youth group once old enough. but i got into highschool, and got into partying, smoking, the whole thing. i wasnt a christian, i knew all the christian-ee things, went through the actions of it to make my parents proud, but i wasnt. i just wanted to do my own thing, and have fun. it wasnt until my senior year of highschool through a chain of events that i realized how screwed up i made my life, and february 14th 2009 i became a legit christian. quit partying, made different friends. which i can tell you, are closer than any of the other friends i had. those friends disappear pretty quickly once you tell em you arent going to party or smoke anymore with em.. anyways. i know christianity, i grew up in it, have learned it my whole life, and have studied it some. i'm no pastor, but i do know quite a bit.

i tell you that so you know i might have some legitimacy to what i'm saying.. none of the aforementioned peoples in the first paragraph are true christians. and most of you on here have a very warped sense of what real christianity is. it is not hating people, it is not protesting funerals, it is not prophesying the end of the world..none of that. it is a relationship between you and God. it is living your life according to the Bible and God's laws (the ten commandments).

yes, God hates sin, but he does not hate the person. i disagree with homosexuality, but that doesnt mean i hate the gay dude. i dont like his decisions or actions, but that doesnt mean i'm going to hate him. i work in the film industry, i'm around gay guys all the time, some of them are super hilarious and cool to be around.. its no different than if i were to be a porn star banging all sorts of chicks.. there is so much over emphasis "christians" put on what sort of sin people are doing that make them so much more horrible than others when they in fact, are sinning just as much if not more.

yes, i'm a christian, but that doesnt mean i sit at home all day reading my bible, worshipping a statue of mary or jesus, and going to church, and its jesus jesus jesus, in your face, and i hate anyone who disagrees with me. no. thats not it either. yea, i read my bible, i go to church around twice a week, and yea i'll talk to you about christianity if it comes up or something. but i'm not going to shove it down your throat, i'm not gonna hate you if you dont choose it. but i'll pray for you and still love on you.

a real christian shows compassion towards people. they will love people, they will be giving of themselves and things to help other people out. they wont hesitate to give. they wont be hateful or vengeful towards people. myself and other christians are by no means perfect. but they are certainly not you warped view of christians.

hopefully, this may clear up some of the misconceptions a lot of you have about what true christianity is. i dont know how well i did explaining it. but in the end, some of you say, you accept all religions, but then you turn around and just hate on christianity. and that really is the only religion you guys hate on. so maybe stand by your word, and "accept all religions" and stop the hating?

yes, those westborrough people are idiots, and the "god hates fags" people are too. but that is NOT christianity. and those people are not living a christian life. guarantee it.

i apologize if there are loopholes in this. sometimes my writing makes sense to me, but not to others. if any of you care to discuss this in depth, pm me.

As an atheist I've never had a problem with religious people in general beucase I thought they were all like the Westboro baptist church. My problem with religious people is that many (I won't generalize and say most) choose to believe in things like creation and shun evolution. You may argue that they are both "theories" except that one is based on observation and scientific method and the other is based on nothing. Many religious people seem to be anti-science, i guess because they see it as a threat? It seems to me that christians try to fit the world to their views, when they should be shaping their views to fit the world they live in.

I went to a catholic school for 12 years. (k-12). I started to realize how dumb it all was around junior year or so. Right around Karios. I went on that. A lot of people got something out of it but I really didn't see the point. So now I kind of don't really believe in anything and just live my life.

You can totally be a good person without being a christian. And most of the people I know who are atheist or agnostic or any other religion besides christian are totally chill and awesome. But most of the Sunday going church crowd and actually practice christian I come across they just kind of turn me off. Maybe it is because I got tired of being around them for so long. But there is just something that makes them feel like they are better than me because they believe in God and heaven and all that jazz.

No hate on Christians. My best friend's family is pretty religious and I still go along with their before meal prayers because I am not rude. It is just some Christians I have had experienced in the past are just really odd people.

Maybe others will agree?

My 2 cents.

Oh and I had a girl tell me she felt bad for me and some of her family because that were going to hell when they died.

The fuck man? Why would you want to believe something like that?

this, I always thought it was weird when people argued that without religion people would be amoral. You should do the right thing because it's right, not because your afraid of going to hell if you don't.

Most athiests/agnostic people dislike religion because it gives people license to believe nonsense without any fact or logic behind it. Usually the bad stories about religious encounters are about Christians because we are middle-upper class white folk for the most part (skiing isn't cheap). Believe what you want, many of the tenents in the bible are great as a general guideline, but it's obvious that the bible isn't inspired/written by an omnipotent being because there are so many holes in it (even in it's "rules" which can be morally wrong to follow in a great deal of cases). I respect you for presenting your case as you did, but.. I just don't see why you believe in a Christian god. And no, "faith" or fear of the unknown is not a reasonable answer.

Dude, thank you for writing this. I'm in the same boat as you, and I appreciate this. I've been meaning to do this for quite some time.

And to those who say that religious people shun evolution and the likes, that may be true for some, but most that I know (myself included) believe that God is the answer to why and evolution is the answer to how.

And the ability to just have all your "sins" forgiven if you go talk to some guy in a church. I hated doing that shit.

just a heads up, you dont have to go talk to a guy to be forgiven.. thats catholicism. which isnt biblical. but thats a whole new discussion.

^ this

the problem that many have with christians is not that they do all the westboro church stuff (very few do). The problem is the idea they form that they are better than everyone else because they are "going to heaven and you aren't."

not all christians believe this either. But many do. and others still decide everyone around them also needs to be christian.

well said, OP. one thing that's always bothered me, however, is the hierarchical structure of the catholic church. it seems to me like it grants divine authority to a select few... something that would be very against the teachings of jesus.

like i said above, catholocism is not doctrinally and biblically correct. without going to far into it, jesus states "i am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the father except through me". in catholocism you have to go through a "father" who goes through Mary, who goes through jesus to God.

it just proves my point even more. he isnt trolling any other thread..

just this one. why? cuz its about christianity.

yes. and yes, you should try to read you bible. i'm not great at it. but its a good way to see what the bible says. i do go to a small group bible study, where we just talk about a chapter in a book of the bible.

its not like some cult meeting or anything. cuz you guys will assume the worst. :p

True Christianity doesn't involve churches. Nowhere in the Bible does it say "believe in me, and go to church every sunday without fail".

So, yes, true Christianity is just prayer and Bible studies.

well said. really, "church" is anywhere there is a group of believers meeting and studying the bible.

just a question, whats with the semi-friction in the united states between 'christians', (in commas because they're diverse) and catholics. I mean, its the same shit. (btw I've been through my whole education in catholic institutions, although I consider myself an agnostic) anyone care to explain? and i apologise if i'm making an incorrect statement or using blatant stereotypes

It's because American Christians are predominantly Protestant and many are brought up being taught erroneous conjectures and misrepresentations of Roman Catholicism.

i appreciated that.

to the whole friend thing though, how much of your christian friend would stay your friends if you "quit" christianity? just a little loophole, making (and for most cases keeping) friends has more to do with a similar "hobby" than anything.

but one thing always kind of bugs me. of course it is great that you live your tolerant lifestyle and all that, but why do you need a fictional character to do so?

that is really a problem for me. as long as an external authority is "punishing" you for doing wrong or "loving" you for doing right, you are not doing it for the right reason.

this might be a little exaggerated, but i see no need for religion. you can be morally and socially functioning and be a "good" person by all accounts WITHOUT religion. moral does not need religion.

everybody should do what he/she wants, but i would like to say in 60 years that i did all the right things because I WANTED IT SO. not because some random carpenter (who has not that much to do with christianity right now) living in a country i have never been to, living at a time i cannot refer to apparently said so.

again no hate, but people need to understand that being social/peaceful/moral is not a monopoly of religious people.

I can respect liberal christians like yourself because you aren't ignorant towards science( the creation of the world through the big bang and evolution etc as an implement that a said "God" used).

One thing that bugs me in terms of a difference between theist's and agnostic atheists is as follows. How can you claim to have some better understading/higher knowledge of the universe that I apparently lack?

What I mean is I hold the belief that I don't know, I don't have a clue, I know humanity does not yet understand everything, and it may never, and I accept this, I don't really understand why people fear it so much.

By accepting Religion you have to say that you know something for sure that I don't, despite the lack of any proof or evidence, you claim to know something unknowable, and for me, that's too much. It's arrogant, ignorant and backwards. That is all.

thankyou OP, i couldnt agree more, i am a Christian as well

I think its sad that Christians put upon the feeling that "there better than others who arnt Christians", i can see how that would get people very angry, i guess ill try to not do that

you submit to a dogma whose texts support slavery, genocide, murder, rejection of logic, repression of women, intolerance, hatred and rejection of people for THEIR personal and private choices. It's interesting how you Christians pick and choose which parts of your own religion to listen to and claim that it is holiness and morality in a box. I'm not a big fan of armageddon cults either or giving credit to a god for what hard work and determination did. People do horrible things in the name of religion, and while many of those in the religion know that it isn't right they can't object because it is justified by the text.

Let me ask you a question. Has a single gay man ever affected you negatively by being gay? No? Then you have NO right to disagree with or judge his choices. (same goes for lesbians.) You haven't jumped on the gaybashing bandwagon but you can see how it is an easy step for many who follow your religion.

There are many tolerant and respectful christians and many denominations that DO NOT hate homosexuality and do not support other choices that your bible got morally wrong (slavery, killing your wife etc). I know that. We can sit and argue about whether there is a god/gods and what their names are but frankly the main message is the same. Love your neighbor and do good works for man. As long as you believe that then I don't have a problem with you and i doubt anyone else here does.

One thing I am sick of:

those poeple claiming the "the bible isn't to take literally / I believe in a god but I also believe in the big bang " etc etc

Seriously...?!

How many christian were saying this 1000 years ago? 0 . You know why, because then science wasn't advanced enough to disprove most part of the bible.

But as soon as people understood how stupid it was to say the earth was flat or 5000 years old, they bend their believe to go with it. Makes me sick.

Look now.. Most Christians know how dumb they would look if they till believed in whats written in the bible, so they just go and say it wasn't meant to be read literally. Well, here's a scoop: it was.

It's just been disproved, and many people are desperately trying to find some way to still believe in this imaginary friend. Science explained life as far as the big bang. We can't explain much before that or what created it, but it is NORMAL. 500 years ago, we thought earth was the center of the universe. Knowledge takes time and I don't mind not knowing what created the big bang (if anything did). I don't need a ghost in the sky so I feel good about it. I am no afraid of the unknown or death.

And let's say in 500 years we found out more things about the universe, those "moderate christians" will again find a way to change, bend their beliefs so it cohabits with science.

God is just something that was created to explains stuff we didn't know at the time. We needed something to feel good, because we were afraid of the unknown. This is human nature, we are afraid of what we don't know/understand and we could do pretty much anything to fight it. The bible was one of the answer. All human are the same, it was the same story for all the other religions.

First, learn how to write.

Second, from what I've seen, Christianity is one of the worst and stupidest religions. I went to confirmation (protestantic) and I learned a lot about christians and their religion. What is written in the bible can be applied to almost every single situation in life, because what christians do, is that they take stuff out of context. The bible is a bunch of bullcrap for the most part, beautifully written, but bullcrap none the less. But because it so long, you can just take what you like and compare it to life. And you can do this in so many ways. That's why there'e so many different forms of christianity.

Now, I think most of the other religions are stupid too, with Islam being very much like christianity. If I had to choose one religion that I'd accept and be a part of, it would be Buddhism. It makes a lot more sense that all of the others, and they don't worship an imaginary god.

I was born and raised christian, alter server, youth group, the whole nine yards. However as I experienced more in the world and became better educated I began questioning Christianity, then became agnostic, and am now "atheist". Although I don't like that name since I feel like that makes it a group which I really don't think it is. I simply do not believe that there is a god.

That being said, almost all christains that I know and have grown up with (including my family) are great people. I have nothing against the individuals, the issue I have is the massive influence that christianity has coupled with the ignorance of pretty much everything. That scares me. And I could probably say the same thing about Islam but living in the US, I just don't get exposed to that as much. It also infuriates me that christains (in the US at least) are the self appointed "good guys" and are here to save everyone.

I think for me it boils down to the fact that my faith and my knowledge have been inversely related throughout my life. Therefore im under the assumption that someone with more faith than me has less knowledge and it scares me that the majority of people that lead me and this country fall into that category.

from the amount of replies referring to christians being hypocritical..

i think i left out another important part. and that is there are also a lot of "pick and choose" christians.. and those are a lot of the ones that i talked about that go to church but arent christians. there are SO many that just pick the feel good side of christianity, but dont live it out the rest at all.

then there are others that just pick the side that they are arrogant about it, and like to yell at people about it.

i also disagree with them, and they also give true christians a bad name.

if you take the Bible as a whole, you will not have hypocritical-ism.

and for the ones saying the bible has loop holes and supports slavery etc etc. welll, it doesnt. i'm not going to argue in this thread, because thats not what i made it for. but i'd be open to discuss it further if anyone wants to.

There is deffinatly a double standard on Newschoolers when it comes to Christianity vs Islam against Christianity and in favor of Islam which is just down right backward and is obviously a product of liberal anti-War on Terrorism sentiments as apposed to actually comparing the two religions. The modern interpretation of Islam specifically in the Islamic world (not western Muslims they tend to be more tempered, sheltered, and moderate) is down right scary, oppressive, violent and sexist. This stands in stark contrast to the modern key word modern interpretation of Christianity (even in the Islamic world where they are murdered and oppressed in all but a few countries) I know there will be a bunch of weed smoking, peace loving liberals who will come in here and declare something they have no experiance first hand with a "religions of peace" but more than likley all of them will know deep down there is something completely backwards, disgusting and dangerous with the modern application of Islamist law, theocratic governments, and most of all their oppression of other faiths and women. But liberals need to be able to blame white people, western society and colonialism for just about anything wrong with the modern world. Its hysterical its our fault these people want to kill us, their own kind, and anyone who doesn't convert to their views? It takes only a little bit of digging to figure out their end game since it has been public since the disemination of the first Caliphate. Islamic world, convert or die, women will live in servitude/ slavery and be bought or sold, civilians are fair game to achieve this end game. Find me a legitiment christian group (not WBC what a joke their not christians their a cult) that believes these things

He never claimed to be a Wahhabi Muslim you sound like such a fucking sensationalist. Compare modern applications of Christianity to Islam and what you just said literally only mirrors Islam

you can't have both. You either believe that God created man and the universe or you believe in the big bang and evolution. They are contradictory. I would just like to ask one question to all atheists. What hope do you have when you die? If you cease to exist when you die that is a scary thing to think about because if I believed that i wouldnt want this life to end and I would live my life in fear

If it makes you feel any better, I despise all religions. Not because of the insolence of some of their followers, but because I find the concept of religion to be fundamentally flawed. There's nothing wrong with spirituality as long as you are truly righteous and don't use it as leverage for hate. However, institutionalizing spiritual belief is, as far as I can tell, historically nothing more than a tool to control people.

As an agnostic Atheist, I am also equally annoyed by the majority of Athiests who make poor arguments against religious institutions. I can't help but facepalm the self-proclaimed empiricists who believe that "that which cannot be proven is not worth believing." If they knew anything about the scientific method they so uphold, they would understand its many limitations, and wouldn't make retarded statements like that.
