Formula One thread

It's kind of surprising IndyCar hasn't picked up more of a following. It's far more entertaining racing than F1 but still a similar discipline, American centric, and has all their races in North America, typically in or around population centers. One would think the F1 fad would help them out.

here’s a few reasons why i think people gravitate towards formula one instead of indycar

1. F1 holds a much richer history over indycar, most people only know about the indy500 including americans. Teams such as ferrari, mclaren, mercedes and redbull and probably household names in some of american and lot of europe.

2. Each team develops their own cars while having multiple engine suppliers. This leaves open the MASSIVE possibilities of discussing technical aspects with other enthusiasts. F1 teams are constantly changing their cars over the course of the season.

3. They’re faster everywhere besides oval tracks which most of the world sees as boring. Again, the lack of differentiation of indy car and the horsepower/speed deficit compared to f1 can make a difference.

4. Indycar seems to lack the driver personalities that F1 thrives off of. Your chances of continuously being an f1 fan probably helps if you love a certain team or driver.

5. They just don’t look as cool

there’s a bunch more i could list but i doubt indycar will ever have the foothold f1 does.

AAA. 2000-2007 when it had its best chance of gaining popularity F1 USA was at Indianapolis. I think it was popular pre mid 90s and NASCAR having its huge boom. I talked to an old guy who was huge into motorsports and F1 and talked about the attempt to have a race in Vegas and some other cities in the 80s 4-5 US races almost happened and then it didn't.

I was pining for a return to Watkins Glen bc Indianapolis is the biggest shithole dumbfuck city in the US but they built Texas. Texas fucking rips in video games too awesome track and looks like plenty of good spots if you do attend.

Wish they did Miami the right way or it was a city course like Vegas.

let’s be real miami and vegas are bullshit tracks that nobody actually likes. COTA on the other hand is a great track, it would be amazing if they picked something else besides two street circuits.

Vegas hasn't actually happened yet. As I said I'd love to play it I've been playing F1 video games since I was little they were the first racing games I ever had and what I'd play with relatives in Europe and what I know the courses from as much as watching. If it doesn't suck as much as Singapore and Monaco I will be cool with it for sure. I'll buy the game next year.

Miami is a joke. They should have knocked down the NASCAR track thats the worst one next to Loudon and built something like COTA. I understand why its there though just the worst of both worlds way too small for a track but not in a city.

realized we probably won’t ever see an f1 race at great tracks such as road america or watkins glen because of their rather *rural* locations. such a shame. but i guess i can’t judge vegas yet i just have a feeling it won’t be a great track.

No hotels. Probably would have kept the race in general if the town built a couple respectable ones or if the course is 1 lake over and just outside of Ithaca + 40 mins closer to Syracuse/Binghamton that would easily be enough. The venue itself is huge and can host a lot of people.

The Waktins Glen local government are also complete pieces of shit cancelled a Phish festival last minute after everyone had travelled because of flooding and 'unsafe' drinking water.

There's a lot of truth there, especially the history and name recognition. Honestly though, Indy being mostly a spec series is why the racing product is much more engaging (imo) than F1. F1 it's really only a couple of drivers and one, maybe two teams that have a chance at winning each race. The field also spreads out more so there's less wheep to wheel and overtaking. Indy has a lot more chaos to it because everyone is in similar equipment and has a larger field. Imdys biggest downfall is their long history of being very poorly managed, the split in the 90s nearly killing the sport, and F1 having way more dollars behind it.

the best tracks are street circuits... you think Monaco sucks too?!?!?!

Monaco is fun from a weekend perspective but an absolute parade from racing perspective.

The Monaco Historic Grand Prix, however, is fucking badass

If anyone is into retro F1 stuff, the movie Grand Prix from 1966 actually has some pretty awesome racing and footage for 1966

I see this argument a lot about Indy being a spec series which makes it more competitive. Reality is that is completely untrue.

most race weekends only 2 teams have a chance to win, Penske and Ganasi. Andretti has been creeping their way up to a higher level and now arrow mclaren is starting to show promise as well. But as a whole it’s typically only the big 2.

only for the 500 itself are there better chances that a small team will have a chance to win.

Basically like Daytona and talladega for nascar.

I do follow Indy on a regular basis.

Would still be a good track if the cars weren't so much larger now, although safety wise it'd probably never get in on the circuit with today's safety standards.

hamilton and verstappen fans are just so god damn insufferable it’s crazy, team lh is on another level of clown.

Truth. They both love complaining about the other driver when they both act essentially exactly the same.

alonso ftw

started d2s tonight. Where can i watch the races?

Pay for the F1 app. It's incredible.

Verstappen was on another level. That first pass of Leclerc and gasly made them look silly Then him pulling out a 18.5 sec ahead of Perez. The guy is an absolute beast.

let’s talk about kmag repeatedly fucking over leclerc in a damn haas

why the hell are f1 fans so damn misogynistic?? it’s honestly annoying as fuck whenever i see a post regarding women and the entire comment section is a bunch of salty young men for no reason.

What happened last race? I saw checo took back first later in the race but Verstappen still won? Did they ask Checo to allow a pass or was Max just faster and legally passed?

i wish there was more support / more popularity in racing regarding women. who knows, in the future a woman could be high up in the F3 or F2 standings! would be sick to see formula one’s own danica patrick. in 2005 she beat scott dixon in the standings and placed 5th overall in 2009.

didn’t she also win a 500

Hate to break it to you guys, but driving around in a circle turning left 250 times is a little different than F1 Racing. Not saying a woman can't become a good F1, driver... but not a great comparison imo. Most nascar drivers would have zero shot in F1, man or female.

No shit, but i think there’s a chance in the future. If michelle mouton could almost win the 1982 WRC then a woman could absolutely at least make it into F2 competitively or act as a REAL test/reserve driver for an F1 team (aside from chadwick who doesn’t seem like she gets much time in the williams). The more females that start competing at an early age the more likely we’ll see some generational talent regardless of gender. Considering almost half of F1 fans are female we might hopefully see a big spike in little girls wanting to race karts. Although strength concerns are valid, I can’t see how a woman CANT gain enough muscle to be able to counteract the forces an F1 car exhibits on one’s body. F1 drivers are fit but slim, none of them seem particularly “ripped” so I think it’s possible as long as they work out hard enough and have the correct body type.

No, she won a less significant oval race by intentionally being slower than everyone else and coming out on top from fuel saving and reduced tire degradation.

still a win and good strategy ig lol so

Ya I mean that one win Carried her through Indy car and through cup series too. Without a win there either. I’m a long time fan of hers but her talent never matched the hype unfortunately.

The right daughter of a F1 champ definitely has a shot. Outsiders aren't breaking in generally speaking anyway all these guys grew up driving and with access to cars.

I hate to deflate all your hopes and dreams but women aren't physically capable of F1. Its too demanding of strnegth. And don't call me sexist, I'm sure there is some fintess girl out there who can hold the same weight with their neck as Russell, but it's a combination of a lot of attributes.

If a women can be a fighter pilot and hold those sustained g’s then they can race an f1 car. Combine that with the fact they have power steering and it’s even easier.

women can drive Indy cars which are substantially harder to driver physically having no power steering.

the hardest part physically is the leg force needed for braking. That is beyond any other series. That being said I’ve seen plenty of chicks who can more than hold their own on leg day.

the largest issue is the % of young girls actually entering any form of racing is very low. Then out of that very low % in the lower tiers even less will get the financial backing to move up the rank. Then out of that few that actually got sponsors you may have 1 that might have the actual talent to compete in modern f1 but so many factors have to line up literally perfect to make it into an f1 seat.

well apparently imola might get canceled for heavy rain and flooding which is so incredibly wack i’m not gonna wait another 2 damn weeks for monaco only to be sorely disappointed cause monaco blows. only way i’ll be happy is if alonso gets pole/wins at monaco. or even a damn ferrari for fucks sake i hate redbull.

Race is postponed

Suzie is the wife of Toto and he used to own a majority stake and be on board of directors for williams. So, hers was a case of being in the right place at the right time.

Technically, all F1 drivers have to be at “right place and right time” and get a bit of luck but hers was more akin to Lance’s dad owning the team.

I haven’t even watched Miami. I know it’s going to be a boring race so why bother with the replay.
