Formula 1 2012 Season

Sorry for double post. Thoughts ahead of practice anyone? P2's conditions seemed to be quite tricky. How much can we learn from P1 though? Seems like P1 rarely shows true pace for Sunday. Could be interesting going into FP3 and Qualifying tomorrow.

Well I think McLaren have stepped up their game ever since they came out with the "McLaren Tooned" series (actually quite funny), but nah in all seriousness their upgrades seem impressive, we will know by Q1 if they are still the team to beat this weekend (which they were fast in Germany as well, Hamilton just had bad luck). Also the new passive DRS system on the Lotus looks interesting, however the straightaways in Budapest aren't really long enough for them to have an affect.

So watching the qualifying and what's going on with redbull cheating. Something about lowering their cars or something. Any opinions/info on this?

i guess the rules state you cannot use "tools" on a car in parc ferme after qually has been run, but they have come up with a way to lower the car's suspension without using "tools". bending the rules to the maximum. They also have got a bit of flak because of some engine mapping scandal in germany.

It's more then that.

The reason a tool is required is so the stewards can see you changing the suspension setup.

Red Bull could sneakingly act like they were cleaning the car whilst actually changing the ride height.

Article 34.5 of the Sporting Regulations states: "In order that the scrutineers may be completely satisfied that no alterations have been made to the suspension systems or aerodynamic configuration of the car (with the exception of the front wing) whilst in post qualifying parc ferme, it must be clear from physical inspection that changes cannot be made without the use of tools."

It's not bending the rules to the maximum, it's flat out breaking them.

I do hate Horners reaction:

"Honestly, it's completely trivial."

He knows it's against the rules and no other team does it.

But the thing that annoys me is that they don't try to bend or evade rules but they just blatantly break them.

And they always come with excuses.

A really boring Hungarian GP. Never really been a fan of this track. Not large enough for F1 in my opinion. Congratulations to Lewis even though I was really pulling for Kimi.

At the same time, what has made Red Bull so competitive is their riskiness along the lines of the rules, and at the same time, every team is after them. For example some things the Red Bull has been doing (engine mapping) is a loophole. Mercedes double F-Duct system was made OK by the FIA and so is Lotus's attempt at a blown diffuse (not from exhaust) and a passive double DRS. I may not read into the rule books enough, I'm busy with what I have on my plate, but it seems like to me everyone, including the FIA want Red Bull to stop winning, and will do anything to stop it. Other less competitive teams, they are helping by allowing Mercedes and Lotus. If someone wants to prove me wrong, go ahead, but don't be an ass about it, I could be wrong simply because I don't have the time to read the rules and interpret them along with how exactly these aerodynamic mechanisms work (general idea, but yeah I'm not an aerodynamisist).

I love watching it when its on but its too much effort to try and follow; can anybody tell me what has happened to Vettel this year? I remember watching him last year just slay the competition and now other people are actually winning races?

Also what websites do you guys go on to follow the season? I wanna follow it more up close in the coming seasons.

speedtv.com and also Pirelli really altered the tires to shake things up. The blown diffusers used by Red Bull are now illegal, and many other nifty things that they used they have banned to try and make competition as equal as possible, kinda worked, a lot of people have won races this year and everything is a bit more interesting and unpredictable.

Stoked for Lotus going 2,3.

Also ESPN2 is showing "Senna" this week. On last night and again monday. Caught the second half and it's a great documentary.

Don't think Mclaren have the consistency to win the drivers title...

But that said, it's still pretty much wide open.... which makes for a great season. Tire management has been so critical.. I personally am not a fan of the tires this season - detracts from the racing - e.g. canada when Hamilton could just drive by Alonso and Vettel to win in the closing laps - nothing they could do.

Sidenote - I have my tickets purchased for Austin... i'll be in Turn 4 grandstand... anyone else here going? I think the Austin circuit is going to be amazing... turns 16,17,18 are essentially turn 8 at istanbul..... epic.

To the person that said Kimi is having a poor year, how do you think that? He could be 2nd in points after the next race easily, he is overdue for a win. Sure, he wasn't won yet, but would you rather be Kimi or Pastor Maldonado (sp?) right now?

Also, is anyone planning on going to the Austin GP? Want to get tickets next week, any suggestions on what seats to get?

yeah kimi is doing pretty damn good this year. look at hungary, if he had the stops lewis had, he would have won. pretty damn good for someone with that big of a break in F1 and on a team like lotus thats just started becoming a successful team this year.

oh and what an awesome season! so much better than the last couple years. same with IndyCar, both series are still up for grabs for any of like 5 drivers, its a pretty damn good racing season.

Don't want to ask to many questions, but can't find any info on Google and you seem to know the track. Would you recommend a seat in turn 7, 9 (row here is 33, higher than ones in other rows I found), or the outro of turn 11?

If any of you want some good F1 news on your facebook, go like F1 Austin on facebook, they have a surprisingly good amount of info for both what's going on in F1 and for the track, even if the admin is overly politically correct sometimes and comes off like a dumbass occasionally in my opinion.

Not trying to promote too much, just saw some posts on here that wanted an easier way to follow F1

Have you heard anything about campsites at the track for sale my friend and I are going to get GA tickets but we want to camp out there

I haven't, those tickets are probably hard to find. Whatever you get, you can't go wrong. Not that I've been to a F1 race, but I think it would be super cool just to be there. GA might be a bit hard to see though, if you can get could seats maybe just get those?

I grew up in Indianapolis and went to the F1 race there and the GA tickets were the best because you were not limited to one area and all the tracks have purpose built viewing areas for GA. But camping would be sweet because you can get hammered with everyone at the track and not have to worry about driving back to a hotel

Sorry for the double post but, who here is dying from the summer break? We are only a week into it and I am already checking the next event countdown timer every hour.

GA at Austin will allow you to move around the whole circuit and occupy all the purpose built grassy berms for viewing - there will be food, entertainment and golf cart style buses to take you around the circuit perimeter... there is also a large outdoor stage area with live music and all the usual nonesense...

Should be good. Any tickets in grandstands will be decent, the elevation change of the circuit at Austin is crazy and that means most places will give you a vantage point over the a large portion of the circuit, as well as downtoan views from the high side of the track.

Should be an epic set up. Fucking accomodation is a nightmare though... still not got anything sorted!

Me too. I'm happy now cause I live in Germany, all the races are going to be at good times for me now, not that stay up till three or four am bullshit in America.

Lets be honest. Alonso looks to be the champion this year. Things just seem to be working out for him.

On another note. Great opportunity for Perez moving to McLaren next year. I'm excited to see how well he will do. He is able to really put some great drives together in a slightly lower tier team. So, with McLaren he could be deadly!

Yes, but also Red Bull in previous years have been quick at the last few tracks on the calendar. Remember Vettel coming back winning in UAE and Brasil, and actually should have won Korea in 10' cept the engine failed, won there last year too. So watch, it looks like Ferrari isnt a winning car anymore at hell have to just get as many points as he can (which he is doing, and doing well). Lewis is the fastest man out there right now. McLaren is the best car right now. He would have given Alonso a run, had he finished in singapore, but now I'm not sure if he can make the difference up. All I will say about Lewis's move. It's risky, dangerous, but could pay off depending on how competitive Mercedes can be. AND he can build the team around him.
