For the people who are doubting global warming

In that other thread people were saying it was acceptable to ignore global warming because the "average global temperature" wasnt rising despite polar cap melting.

Consider the other consequences. Polar melting is increasing sea level worldwide, and also will change the ocean currents which will drastcally change world weather. The increase in sea level can result in over 20 feet of rising sea, which means a lot of places will flood, (Florida, coastal countries). Storms are gonna get worse and worse. We've already seen an increase of terrible storms in the last few years. Katrina and in south east asia. Many of the hottest years on record have been in the last few years.

In terms of skiing, all the worlds glaciers are melting. Mt. Hood may be getting more snowfall, but that doesnt have anything to do with temperature, which will rise. I know on the east coast winters have been getting worse and worse, generally with shorter and warmer winters.

I dont think scientists fully understand the effects of that much carbon in our atmposphere, but global warming will be exponential if it degrades the ozone layer at a faster rate, which has been proven to occur.

If anything, acting green preserves the amount of fossil fuels we have and reduces our dependency on them, which is economically wonderful since billions of dollars and spent on import of oil from Russia and the middle east to America. Canada has oil sands,but thats another issue entirely.

Just because average world temperatures seem to be stagnant, doesnt mean you or skiing will not be affected. We all surely will. I just hope that skiing lasts as long as it possibly can.

word

it's just a cycle that the earth is going through.

Did you know that the earth is cooling down at the same time too? It's both warming up and cooling down.

Yeah...but searchbar man...that's been said countless times on here.

"I dont think scientists fully understand the effects of that much carbon in our atmpospher" so you're smarter than a scientist.....im pretty sure they know what the fuck is going on

and this years winter on the east coast was great, i had no complaints,, your argument sucks you have no proof of anything, zero credibility, and the last thing NS needed was another dumb ass thread on global warming

Yea man, what east coast were you skiing. This year was really sick. It was the best season and one of longest in 3-4 years for me. I personally don't think global warming is a true threat.

Yea seriously. This winter we got more snow on the East Coast than we have probably since the winter of 1993-1994.

The east getting more snow is a sign of warming oceans waters which the jetstream brings up here and turns to snow.

Ergo...global warming...

Wow it's like you just Googled global warming and wrote down everything the first Wikepedia article said. Give me something cutting edge at the least if you are going to remake a thread for the one-thousandth time.

im so sick of all this global warming shit, sure i believe it's happeing or going to happen, but who the fuck cares, just let earth do its thing....we can try as much as possible to prevent it, but mother nature is stronger and will prevail in the long run, so lets save us all some stress and worry about things we can for sure and def. fix here on earth

Things like lowering car emissions, switching to cleaner fuel sources and creating more efficent electrical products?

Seems like a win-win to me...

" In terms of skiing, all the worlds glaciers are melting."

a very weak argument as most glaciers are remnants from ice ages and are supposed to melt....

what you are supposed to argue is that they are melting faster than usual.

glad someone finally realized this.

these glaciers have been giving mother earth a brain freeze (and frostbite on her toes) for long enough.

help tear down with glaciers!

stop calling it global warming. that term is why people are doubting it so much. in canada alone this year, we saw record breaking snow in some areas of ontario, snowstorms in alberta until the beginning of may and all in all a cooler spring than usual.

now calling it climate change would be correct. the closest thing i have come across as believeable is what happens in the movie THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. now of course not at that speed but basically the ocean currents are interrupted and the earth will correct itself through catastrophic changes in the weather.

no i mean do things aside from helping prevent global warming like feed the poor, restore old houses, clean up the community...u really think that us doing those things u mentioned will prevent or slow down global warming, i highly doubt it....but hey it might work

You think that cleaning up your community is more important than creating more efficent methods of energy production/consumption? Seriously?

You need to look past your own back yard buddy...all this little petty shit will be irrelevant if we don't make our lives more efficent, en masse, in terms of energy consumption/allocation/production.

,,,

your thread title leads us to believe that you will tell us a fact, statistic, or study that PROVES global warming. instead, you just tell us the consequences.

i concur. many scientists have found that the earth is cooling and warming.

Im gonna make it a political thing now and say that liberal people seem to think and believe in global warming wayyyy more than conservatives. Im not saying that we dont contribute to the airs greenhouse gases but there is way more factors than just people that are involved in it. and plus al gore and the democratic party are basically trying to scare us citizens into thinking that if they dont step in and do something that the worlds gonna end tomorrow! Holy shit al gore you crazy bastard, thats all his movie was, just scaring the public

I REALLY wish we had a 'lock thread' option...these threads turn out the same every time...

All of you global warming doubters are goofy.

"My winter on the east coast was great. Global warming isn't real!"

Really? Are you kidding?

Global climate change is much more than the polar ice caps melting. It's the destruction of the layer of the ozone that keeps the earth at a steady temperature. So that will mean warmer summers and colder winters.

"Whoa that sounds great!"

Sure that may sound great today but the fluctuation of temperatures will continue to grow larger and larger until eventually it will be virtually impossible to survive a frigid winter or a scorching summer.

"But the earth is going through a cycle. It's fine"

It's not fine. The earth is heating up at rates it has NEVER raised before. NEVER. Seriously. Never. Not in the history of the world has the earth been heating up as much as it is now.

"But it's a myth and it's years and years away."

Actually it's the truth. Why do you think politicians from both the right and the left are focusing more and more on global warming? Scientists are not making this up. The few scientists that continue to deny the threats of global climate changed are not respected and offer vague and loose facts. And as far as years and years away? Nope. 2050 is the point of no return. That's 42 years from now which would make me 64. Plenty of life left to live in a world without seasons.

Global climate change is not a myth and those deniers should be embarrassed to post or think such things. It's not a left or right, Republican or Democrat, Canadian or American or any "this or that" issue. It's a people issue. Our grandparents and parents were faced with the world challenges of fascism, communism, and mass genocide. Our generations challenge will be to defeat the effects of global climate change while trying to sustain our quality of life.

Grow up. Life can't be just about skiing if life itself can't exist.

seriously global warming people are pissing me off. every fucking thing they use as "proof" of global warming. more snow-o yeah its cuz global warming. hot summers-global warming. colder winters-global warming. wtf, you people act like the climate is something that should be pretty much the same year to year. newsflash, its fucking not. the climate changes, otherwise this earth would be boring as fuck. you think snowfall is supposed to be te same year to year? no. some years its way high and others way low. thats where the average comes from.

so the ice age should have never happened at all because prior to that, the history of climate on the earth had NEVER been that cold EVER?

right?

Whatever.. the climage changes caused by humans are nothing compared to what nature has and can deal to this earth.

A Tale of Two Houses

House #1

A 20 room mansion ( not including 8 bathrooms ) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool ( and a pool house) and a separate guest house, all heated by gas. In one month this residence consumes more energy than the average American household does in a year. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2400. In natural gas alone, this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not situated in a Northern or Midwestern 'snow belt' area. It's in the South.

----------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------ ----------------

House #2

Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university. This house incorporates every 'green' feature current home construction can provide. The house is 4,000 square feet ( 4 bedrooms ) and is nestled on a high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat-pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground.

The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas and it consumes one-quarter electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is c o ll ected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into undergro und purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The colle cted water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Surrounding flowers and shrubs native to the area enable the property to blend into the surrounding rural landscape.

~~~~~
HOUSE #1 is outside of Nashville , Tennessee ; it is the abode of
the 'environmentalist ' Al Gore.
HOUSE #2 is on a ranch near Crawford , Texas;
it is the residence the of the President of the United States ,
George W. Bush.
Thanks.
For those of you that claim to be informed or are looking for some good facts
check out this site. It's credited as being a leader in the coverage of global climate change:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment
The ski industry is taking a strong initiative to go green. Most companies have a "Please think of the environment before printing this message" line at the end of their emails.
Jiminy Peak in Mass installed it's own wind turbine over a year ago and is hoping to eventually become carbon neutral.
And for your information kiddies, even your beloved NS is taking charge against climate change. If you don't believe me, ask Bishop to send you the new media kit for the 08/09 season.
I'm not saying you guys are stupid. I'm saying you're misinformed and a little research on the internet at some sites that aren't fox news, cnn, or msnbc will lead you to some interesting results. There's no denying it's happening.
That information about Gore and Bush is outdated and again this is the dumbest response to a Global Climate Change thread ever. Where did you get that? A company email joke?
As I stated before, this isn't a red or blue issue. It's a people issue. When people were starving during the Depression, it wasn't a red or blue issue, it was a people issue.
This is why we have so much trouble in American politics. Why does it always have to be a "this" or "that" issue? For once we could stand up and say, "This is a problem and it has to be solved." I'm not talking about one side's answer or the other. I'm talking about a joint compromise that will fix the problem.
Example: You and a friend are hungry. You want to go to the McDonalds. Your friend wants to go Burger King.
Answer 1: A partisan answer is to bicker back and forth, arguing your point until your blue in the face. No one budges and at the end of the day you're both still hungry.
The Correct answer: You guys both state your cases and decide on a compromise. You go to a diner you both agree on, and your problem of being hungry is solved.
Politics could be this easy if everyone wasn't so god damn worried about who's winning or losing on a daily basis on CSPAN. In the case of Global Climate Change, everyone is losing because the earth is being decimated.
Come on guys, we're smarter than this. I know it.
I dont doubt at all that people have used the whole "Global Warming" issue as both a scare tactic and a way to enrich their own interests (eg, Al Gore). But just because the most outspoken (and unfortunately popular) figures are up-their-own-ass-hypocrites doesnt change the cold hard facts: The Earths temperature is rising, and we still are not sure why. Climate change is undeniably occurring, and its rapidly changing the face of the planet in unexpected and potentially damaging ways.
So great, point out the hypocrisy, in fact, please do, on all our behalves. People who leech of a real issue and storm up fear for their own personal monetary gains should be shot. But just because the message has been spread by assholes doesnt mean the data is false. Its a real, and it should be a topic that is discussed without political bickering.
Mike, that info is not outdated. Dumb? http://www.snopes.com/politics/bush/house.asp
Opinion: Your fist pounding environment rhetoric is very old and outdated to me. It reminded me of the hypocritical nature of Al Gores primary dwelling, regardless if he offsets his whatever, by however. He is a self serving attention whore. IMO of Course! It also reminds me of classroom debates many decades ago.
Fact: No one debates the climate change. No one debates that the cedar stumps that are exposed on our beach after a storm are from forests 10,000 years ago and that the seas have risen dramatically, not recently but 5,000 years ago - what caused that? Cave mens campfires?
Fact: This reminds me of the debates I sat in nearly 40 years ago when gas went from .35 to .70 a gallon. Oh! the outrage! The consensus was that we would be out of oil by 2000, that pollution from clear cutting the rainforest's natural filters was going to choke us all.
Fact: Remember this and remember it well. I grew up in the hippy generation. I remember you articulate Harvard types except you look different now, you cut your hair and took a bath. Your verbal prose is exactly the same then, as it is now. Lots of fear mongering.
Opinion/Speculation:
You know what some say now? They say if we and try to burn all the fossil fuel available that we will kill the earth from the emission. That it is impossible. No worries, The earth has had a way of correcting itself, humans are a grain of sand on a beach, nothing we do will change our short tenure here in the grand scheme of things other than learn to live outside of the earth.
So, get on your soap box, just do me this service and come talk to me again when you are my age.
We've already fucked up the ozone layer. There is no turning back.
But may I ask...What happened after the ice ages? Did they just melt for no apparent reason? Dino farts. Good thing those large lizards are extinct or else we would all be dead.
I dont get your question. The earth goes through climactic cycles, and what we see now could very well be just one of these periodic shifts. The rate at which its occurring is a bit worrisome...
exactly
just because the earth never had been this warm before doesn't mean it's not a natural thing. You can't say that it's warm because it's our fault due to the fact solely that the earth has never been this warm before. I bet you that this exact same fearmongering would happen if it was reversed with global cooling with fear of an ice age looming over us because all of our "aerosols" are killing off the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which would result in an inevitable ice age unless we stop producing aerosols.
It's just propaganda to strike some fear in us without being overly ridiculous.
Don't worry about it. You can't reverse it. You can only MAYBE slow it down. The US alone uses ungodly amounts of oil each year - that needs to stop.
I've done a fair bit of research on the existence of Global warming, and I am a "scientist," but there is compelling evidence on both sides, as far as the ozone argument is concerned: UV radiation emmited by the sun happens to be at the exact frequency that O3 (ozone) adsorbs, so that is ozones role, if ozone becomes significantly depleted, the major concern is Skin Cancer, that would kill us before we even notice a temp rise... as far as the greenhouse effect is concerned, it is currently keeping us alive, without it we would die, the problem is, if the number of greenhouse gases increases the amount of energy contained within our atmosphere as opposed to radiating away will increase, here is a list of greenhouse gases, (in decreasing importance)
CCl3F2
CCl3F2
O3
N2O
CH4
CO2
as you can see CO2 is at the bottom of that list.. the problem is, there is a much larger amount of CO2 in our troposphere than any of the others, so to reduce the global warming effect allot of CO2 would need to be removed before we saw a significant change, as you can see, the chloroflurocarbons are much higher up the list, however they are found in much smaller quantities (10^-8) so do not have as large an overall effect.
As far as I can tell, Human activities are having an effect on the temperature of the earth, but the extent of this is almost impossible to gage, much of the damage occurring now may have consequences that go unnoticed for many years, however, many of the "effects" scientists claim are a result of global warming, have been found to be natural fluctuations which have been highlighted as a result of our current paranoid climate...
^^^ Thank you! That is essentially what I heard from my father, who has a doctorate in chemistry, from Vanderbilt, I might add. He was the one who told me 40 years ago that it was crap that was being fed to me in the schools then. I doubted him. You should hear him now go on countering all the doomsday news.
methane (CH4) is pretty overrated, there is 0.00017% of it in the troposphere, true, it is 30X more potent a greenhouse gas than CO2 but there is 2058x more CO2 in the troposphere, making CO2 far more of a concern.
Methane was just something new for the press to play with...
(oh and if you want sources for any stats I've quotes I'll point you to them...)
Cause I care about how i spell on NS, get real man....It's cool to hate on fellow NS'ers...good job buddy.
Read the article...no mention of cow shit. Its talking about the frozen reserves of methane hydrate and its effects on the planets delicate climate balance.
