Football (soccer) its becoming ridiculous

although this thread will fall on mostly deaf ears as most of the people on ns have little interest in football, i thought i would tell you whats up in england.

Last night was the last night of the transfer window (the period of time in which players can transfer from club to club), normally this is a busy time as clubs have a last grasp attempt to complete their squads for the season ahead. Yesterday however was different.....

Manchester City used to be owner by the former Thai Prime Minister (who incidently faced charges of corruption and money laundring) he then sold his stake in the club some hideously rich arabs. These arabs then put a bid in for Robinho of Real Madrid (who had been chased by chelsea for ages and stated endless times he wanted to go to chelsea), Gomez of Germany, Villa of Valencia and Berbatov of Spurs (who was on his way to Man Utd) that comes to a combined total of 120million pounds worth of talent (250+m dollars, give or take). They ended up with just Robinho for 30+m.

My point is that at the moment most of the money in football is in england because it is the strongest league, and within 4 or 5 clubs. These clubs can literally afford to buy anyone they like and pay them whatever the the player demands (madrid and barca being the only clubs outside england who can afford this). This is severly damaging football as it is becoming a monopoly and players are only at the club to pick up their wage packets, they couldn't really care how well they play. A prime example was shevchenko when he was at chelsea. They paid 30 million quid for him and 130,000 grand a week for him. he was a severe flop and cost about 5 million a goal.

i'd be interested in what anyone else thinks about the state of football in europe at the moment

Joga has been talking about this for a long time. but what are you gonna do? those guys need to make money too. i mean, they dont have to anymore because they now rich as fuck but im saying playing football is their job. anyways, just tune into some Dutch games or watch the lower ranked teams play because there is always something to see in the beautiful game.

from my perspective the job of a footballer is to entertain the paying spectators, earning stupid cash and sitting around not showcasing your talents is not entertainment.

Bring back the days when english football was played with pride and passion for the shirt and the crowd lived every moment of a match.

i know what you mean about pride for ones team and passion for the game. do you happen to be a rugby fan as well? well im South African, (no hard feelings for taking the world title back eh? haha) and we are currently in Tri-Nations as you may know. there was a player who i dont feel like mentioning because of my disgust for him, who left the Bokke and joined up with the Wallabees for better pay. so, i know exactly what you mean firsthand.

This is the reason the NFL is the most successful pro sports league in the world. The NFL has the draft, a salary cap, and free agency, all which provide the same fairness to all teams. You can't win with a ton of money because you can only spend within your salary cap. The only way to assemble a successful team is to manage your money, draft well, and make good trades/sign good free agents.

Smarts > money

Sorry for the double post, but i'm talking about the LEAGUE and the way it's set up.

This has nothing to do with the game of football so don't turn this into a football vs soccer thread.

Soccer doesn't work anything like American football, it can't to be honest.

A draft system is impossible because there is no college system outside of the US that produces players. Typically big clubs like Arsenal, Barca, etc. have youth academies where they recruit kids and train them through their system. After that point they either keep them, let them go, or sell them to the high bidder.

A salary cap would also not work. Leagues typically have a promotion and relegation system. The top 3 or so finishing teams in the lower league get promoted to the next league up, and the bottom 3 or so teams get relegated to the next division down. How do you make a salary cap work for Manchester United (who are worth over a billion) and also have it work for Halifax Town (5th division) who's stadium barely holds 6,000 people? The EU also enforces labor laws that govern how much or little you can pay someone, and a cap would have to contend with that.

Are you kidding? Compare Bayern Munich to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The Bundesliga works exactly like the Premier League.

Its true that the superclub situation does suck (and hell, i'm a supporter of one of them, arsenal) but who can blame them? The best players want the most money, the best clubs have the most money and are willing to pay to win championships. But i think every club goes through stages, up and down regarding their play etc. It's all part of a cycle.

And as has been said, salary caps, drafts etc just wouldn't work. There is no universal system to get into the big leagues through college or anything. In football (soccer) in general it seems as if you either are recruited through a youth club, or you get scouted onto a team. I love this system because in my opinion, it makes it easier to make it to a decent club. Hell, i could go over there, play for some shit teams and just keep playing well, getting scouted and moved up to better clubs.

I do wish American sports had relegation though it could never work. Imagine the chaos that would follow some huge NFL team getting relegated to a lower league. I love it because it gives them something to play for. The best matches of the year are between the top 4 teams, and the bottom 4 teams. Everyone fighting to stay alive

120 million pounds is 214 million dollars. still a lot of money, but i was pretty sure your conversion rate was off.

Yeah, i understand now, I just wasn't really sure how soccer leagues worked.

I can see how the relegation system would work well, one of the things I absolutely hate is how teams can just tank their season and try to get a better pick in the draft with no real consequence next year. The NBA does a good job with preventing this by using a lottery system though.

One example is the boston celtics two years ago, they were terrible and should have had a very high draft pick, but they ended up with the fifth pick. After making some key trades to get ray allen and kevin garnett, and signing james posey, they when't from worst to first.

I think the american leauge system gives a much fairer chance to all teams to quickly improve. In the english leagues, from what I understand, a lower level team would have a very hard time making it to the top against all the big power houses. It would take lots of good decisions, some luck and lots of time. That can be hard for organizations and the fans when their team is just beat down by the wealthier teams.

From a fan perspective its much more fun to follow a team through the low points when there's the possibility of being good in only a year or two. In soccer it might be a very long time, if ever, and thats no fun for fans.

ah, but that's where loyalty comes in to play. That's why i think soccer fans in Europe are more passionate and loyal to their teams than many american supporters of sports. If you can follow a team when they are down in a low league and love it, then you can follow them through anything. And i think it's easier because everywhere has a small team that people can support.

they want to go after messi and torres in the next transfer window along with ronaldo, and they have talked about making a strong bid for ronaldhino too. idk how legit that is with him just moving to milan, but still, silly to even consider. city will end up looking like a "custom team" from a video game, even moreso than chelsea.

as for how far this will go, the abu dhabi united group's net worth including companies and holdings is reported to be in the 1.3 trillion dollar range, and the manipulator of the takeover, Sulaiman Al-Fahim, has a net worth reported to be 10 times that of chelsea owner abromovich.

thaksin was a moron for firing eriksson. if eriksson was still at city, imagine what he could do this season with all his new assets.

Soccer is pathetic.

When I watch soccer, I see grown men crying, screaming thier lungs out, rolling around on the turf, grabbing thier knees or face, basically 3 to 10 times per game.

These men must be suffering grave injuries, perhaps season ending, or even career ending, to be in such pain. I mean these are big strong men, it takes alot ot make a professional athlete cry right? Do you ever see Football(real football, USA football) players cry? If they do its because of something gnarly, something torn, something broken. Do you ever see Football players roll around on the ground writhing in pain? Do you ever see Football players fake injuries?

So anyway back to the field, the injured soccer players will then get strechered off the field by medics. These medics will then spray the injuried athletes with some sort of magic spray. This magic spray apparently has the ability to repair torn ligaments, broken bones, severe sprains, dislocated shoulders, anything! Seconds after getting this magical spray, these soccer players RETURN TO THE GAME. AFTER CRYING AND SCREAMING AND ROLLING AROUND IN PAIN, SOMETIMES FOR MINUTES.

now thats what I call sportsmanship.

The great thing is these pretend injuries, lead to penalty kicks and take time off the clock and whatever the fuck else happens in that retarded game. USA lost to Italy in the last world cup beause of thier SICK FLOPPING AND CRYING SKILLS.

College soccer in the USA is the height of the sport. There is no crying or flopping in college or HS soccer in the US.

PS Here is a fun drinking game to play, while watching a soccer match, take a shot everytime you see a grown man cry, you will be HAMMERED by the end of the game.

i just wanted to let everyone know that in fifa i played as manchester city and i had 3 straight undefeated seasons

I wouldnt be surprised to see teams like Man U and Liverpool fold in the near-ish future. Their american owners have purchased the clubs through debt, and it will probably eventualy catch up to them.

It would be interesting to see whether clubs like Chelsea and City would collapse if the owner simply lost all interest in running a club.

there is american football

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

ooooooo dissssssssssssss hahahh.

honestly american football cannot be compared to futbol.

you dont see fat futbol players but you do see fat football players.

most of the time they arent even injured, they fake it as a strategy to get calls for them.

because you were said "you dont see fat futbol players but you do see fat football players." so i didnt know if you were saying its good to be fat as far as football goes, or if you think that futbol is better

not trying to start a fight but im just saying being fat is not good. im all bout futbol.

pretty sure saying football players are fat says enough

well one of the greatest, if not the greatest player of all time, diego maradona was a fat fuck, so thats not really true and you contradicted yourself by saying that when they fall most of the time soccer players arent even hurt so your being unclear

see you say that because you havent played football, ive played both and football is more demanding of a sport because its a lot less shoulder use and more of a head use, they also did a study on that like sports science show that showed that football players create more force per hit meaning that they hit harder than in rugby, granted they had pads, but saying that rugby is the only real mans game is an ignorant statement

true. i've played soccer/ football, and american football, and basketball, and hockey, and lacrosse, and rugby is easily the most fun of them all. lax comes in second. the others are just a complete waste of time.

i am constantly being begged to play football at my high school and i tell them that i can't run properly while wearing full body armor. also, football players don't know how to tackle or how to get tackled, they just throw themselves at each other like idiots because they wear all those stupid pads. may as well be wearing bear-proof suits.

this is not just happening in soccer it happens to all sports at some point just maybe no on such a big scale it is the nature of the game

I wouldnt say soccer is pathetic but i do agree that all that diving bullshit is really killing the flow of the game. The game of soccer at least at the professional level has turned into a game where people just keep trying to draw the foul rather than play the game the way its supposed to be.

just my 2 cents

Fuck off you dirty Yank twat you don't even know what you're talking about.

As for Man City, their owners can fuck off too. They're bitches thinking they can play FIFA in real life. You (OP) also forgot to mention the blank check they sent to Real Madrid for Van Nistelrooy, all Madrid had to do was right in the amount they wanted for him (they could have said 1 billion dollars FFS).

City is going to become a huge joke, several top pros have already stated that they would never sign for City no matter how much money they're offered. People say Chelsea and Man U are wasteful with money but this City shit is next level. Chelsea injected money to get a strong base squad and haven't spend huge in a few years now (save the Shevchenko debacle but lets forgive Abramovich for that one), as for United, well they'll make big signings every year but no where close to what City is talking about.

If I were an English fan right now I'd be really pissed. Foreign investors are ruining their league. I used to think Blatter and Platini were daft cunts with their 6+5 rule (or whatever it was) but it seems that may be the only way to save the BPL, mind you the level of play would lower significantly. All the other leagues seem to be doing alright in comparison though.

I apologize for the rant, I'm just kind of pissed off at Manchester City and their owners right now.

Wrong! The only leagues where there is diving is the Italian league and maybe a few South American ones. But who watches those anyways other than locals?

Hahahah you're so biased it's unbelievable. City is now in the exact same position Chel$ki were in a few years ago. Go whine and bitch if you like, but I hope you realize you're being a hypocrite.

Sour grapes over losing Robinho? It's the same shit, just a different club.

diving is a problem, but its become part of the sport. And to whoever said you don't see football players faking injuries and shit, its because they have NO benefit from it. What, are they gonna get a free field goal attempt because someone got hurt so that the score will be 45-33? In soccer a freekick can make all the difference. They also drag it out to create breaks, where others can get water and rest a minute. Something else football players wouldn't do, because 5 seconds of play then a 30 second break doesnt wear you out much. You wouldn't even be able to tell if a football player was faking it, because just about all but 2 of the players end up on the ground after every play anyways. And saying its a pussy sport is just plain stupid. Ever play goalkeeper? Do it, most keepers have gotten just as many concussions as football players, and add in broken fingers and things like that. If you don't believe the injuries can be serious, just search petr cech.

Ha, and I think we've got a very jealous chelsea fan now. Give it up man, every big team has done it at some point. (Granted that the money Man, city suddenly has is completely insane)

"Maradona has also separately claimed that he had an agreement with

FIFA, on which the organization reneged, to allow him to use the drug

for weight loss before the competition in order to be able to play[11].

According to Maradona, this was so that the World Cup would not lose

prestige because of his absence. This allegation has never been proven."

"Maradona has always had a tendency to put on weight, and suffered increasingly with obesity from the end of his playing career until undergoing gastric bypass surgery in a clinic in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia on March 6, 2005. When Maradona resumed public appearances shortly thereafter, he displayed a notably thinner figure."

Because Chelsea tried to buy CR7, Van Nistelrooy, Ronaldinho, Torres, Fabregas, Ronaldinho and many more right? Right?

OH WAIT!

STFU! Chelsea did what they needed to in order to establish a good base of top players. They didn't buy the whole world you fucking tosser. And no I'm not mad about missing out on Binho, he's never seemed to be a loyal player and 34M pounds is way too much.

I'm just curious, did you read and understand that whole thing? I know it says he had a tendency to put on weight while playing, but that happens to a lot of players (look at Ronaldo in the past, brazilian one, not CR)

And the second part says from the end of his playing career he gained weight and got surgery. Not hating or arguing, just pointing it out to avoid confusion

Way to generalize a whole league based on one player. Ronaldo's dive have nothing on those Italians BTW.

Fuck you too! Diving is not and should never be part of the sport. Also, what Chelsea/Man U/Real Madrid did has nothing on what City is bragging about doing.

fuck me? So you're saying diving hasn't become a part of football? Whether you like it or not, its happening. I agree with you! Its shitty and i like seeing it punished, but you cannot deny that it has become a part of games.
