And City are doing what they need to do in order to make the champions league next season. Should they achieve this, a lot of star players may even want to go play for them.
They made all those offers on the trade deadline, knowing full well most would be rejected. There's no way all of those star player's were going to be signed with less than one day of consideration from their teams. They were lucky that Robinho was already disrupted and Madrid were eager to sell; but obviously they overpaid.
