There is a long history that informs people’s experiences and honestly it’s pretty bitter and negative against indigenous people with few exceptions. I think it’s important to realize and understand who’s land you’re occupying- your house and mine was built on a parcel of land that was occupied for 10,000 years prior to our ancestors arrival so I don’t think it’s too much to ask to show a little respect.
Occupied by whom? There is a large misconception that prior to white settlement North America was a bunch of happily cohabitating tribes which got along. This isn’t accurate there was constant warfare just like everywhere else in the world prior to 1900. Most tribes had only been living in their ‘ancestral homelands’ for one to three generations before American settlement. In a similar fashion they used overwhelming violence and economic warfare to conquer lands and enslave other people. Actions which would hardly stand up to the court of modern opinion.
If you live on historically Snoqualmie territory as many in western wa do, their history is particularly violent as they were basically the bully in WA and viewed white settlers as useful ally’s to further their war against other tribes, particularly the Yakama.
fun fact of the day. Let’s stop pretending white people have some sort of monopoly on oppressive violence to exploit others. Just been better at it in more recent history.
