Folsom skis is getting lit up on Instagram

How the fuck are this many people upset/commenting on a ski company nobody has heard of or care about? (Am I ignorant here? I feel like Im pretty plugged in and have only ever seen stuff about Folsom a handful of times?)

They must have used some imagery that was egregiously bad for people to get this upset about it. I'd only expect this type of reaction from a bigger brand.

Folsom skis rock bro. All these haters need to go fuck off, bunch of broke ass liberal timberline kids with their 20k tuition just to work as a ski instructor, bunch of morons. They are just paying respec to the natives, idiots will defend skiing in a durag listening to nas. Then get all pent up when a ski company uses a indigenous art style. Piss off.

Smells like recreational outrage from people who have pronouns in their bio and unironically use the term 'problematic'

Come on man. You can’t have white people replicating Indian artwork on a top sheet that is pretty disrespectful.

I think making a ski in 2022 with indigenous symbols on it or whatever is pretty tone deaf. It's a wack thing to do and Folsom should probably know better than to do that.

At the same time, the people who are acting like they are saving the world by getting outraged over this are super, super obnoxious. Ski activists like to speak out about oppression, racism, sexism, and all the rest of it to try to make themselves feel better about their extremely privileged lifestyles. IMO most of them aren't doing it to benefit the communities that they're speaking out on behalf of, they're doing it to make themselves look better.

If you got a problem with it, just don't buy Folsoms, and donate to indigenous charities. All of these activist "ski bums" can definitely afford it.

Do you have any pics?

There has been kanji, koi fish, dreamcatchers, graffiti, rasta themes, pnw native style artwork, etc on skis forever and nobody bats an eye. What made these bad?

just because something was acceptable in the past doesn't mean it should be acceptable today, like 60 or 70 years ago it was totally fine to just be openly racist lol

I still think those graphics are fine? They look cool af. Old rossi's with the koi, old obsethds with the totems and old volkls with kanji was rad af and didn't hurt anyone. They're not putting sambo on the damn things ffs

it's totally up to you to decide weather those graphics are chill or not, that is 100% everyone's own decision. I was just trying to point out that what is deemed acceptable changes over time and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

No idea. I’d like to see them and learn what the controversy is but just saying in general if you want some native artwork it’s a bad look to fake it.

Also have never seen the graphics. Also also got to try some a few weeks ago.

If I had an extra 1500 lying around, I'd own them. So damn fun. People complain about DPS being expensive..

How do you do art of a style you enjoy without 'faking it'? I don't understand. Can only certain cultures make certain art? That's some segregationist ish that I'm not about tbh

I get what you’re saying, let me try to clarify a little bit. I would say making art of any cultural background no matter who you are is perfectly fine. If you want to carve logs to look like Salish totem poles because you personally think it’s really fun go ahead. What people get pissed off about is monetizing other people’s heritage without their knowledge or approval. I’m not commenting on Folsom specifically just pointing out in general what you’re not supposed to do.

Don't call them Indians, this isn't India.

It’s like saying henrik can’t have dreads and can’t wear a durag.

These pronoun idiots get sensation from bitching about every thing. Same mfs that wear a mask while driving alone

who fucking cares

dude literally the first comment in this thread links to an indigenous person speaking out about this lol

Lots of hearsay going on here, Nahanni's (who is in fact Native btw) IG story isn't up anymore but this is the gist of it (from memory, take the details with a grain of salt):

She was doing some type of project (school maybe?) about indigenous graphics and the ski industry and came across a ton of Folsom graphics labelled "cultural" like a dream catcher. She asked if the artist was indigenous in an IG comment and they DM'd her basically saying this should be an email and that she was cyber-bullying them. So, she deleted the comments and sent them an email asking the same question.

They replied super defensive, indicated they don't care what ethnicity makes their graphics (and implied it was wrong for Nahanni to ask), the graphics where legally Folsom's IP, there was a hang up about a ski graphic based off the Hudson Bay Blanket design. Apparently, Folsom was defending it saying an employee from upstate NY came up with the idea, and Nahanni replied saying that the Blanket was used to intentionally spread disease to Natives in Canada, and gave them a few book titles about the matter.

I personally have never heard about the Hudson bay Blanket before but here's an article about its complicated history if anyone is interested:

https://www.cbc.ca/radio/unreserved/uncovering-the-complicated-history-of-blankets-in-indigenous-communities-1.5264926/the-complicated-history-of-the-hudson-s-bay-point-blanket-1.5272430

I don't remember if Folsom responded or not but they did block her on IG and removed the graphics from their website, which prompted her posting about this publicly. She said she doesn't like cancel culture and didn't think she'd go after someone like this but after their interaction she thought it was justified.

Okay ngl that’s kind of fucked up, damn

I always take the high road in situations like these and spread awareness to blatant racism. What folsom skis did is tone deaf and depriving to indigenous culture and people's. I'm appalled that we live in a society where this can be passed off as the status quo and am so proud of all the brothers and sisters who called this company out on its appropriation of cultural artwork. Which BTW was STOLEN from indigenous artists who struggle to make a living... Shocked rn I'm at a loss for words.

Genuine question. Is the issue that they plagiarized (which is obviously wrong, we learned it In school) or that a white person made a Native American design, or a combo of both? I’m so confused. Why can’t we just buy shit we like and not buy shit we don’t like.

Bro what, I was trying to clarify the issue and educate myself. Leave it to the libtards to call someone trying to understand and get it a bigoted dumbass

And last time I checked, nobody is forcing anyone to buy anything. So again why can’t we just buy what we like and not buy what we don’t.
