Fly fishing is taking over

I just come here for SFB's pics. Keep it up man. Great great stuff. Maybe I'll buy my ass a new digi photo taker one of these days and post a pic or two that isn't goprogarbage.

fly fishing seems like a great time, I just have no idea where to start and where to learn

dude dont let that stop you i started out casting with a 40$ set up from walmart

K threads for alllll dis info. After moving to Boise last year and hearing nothing but fly fishing talk I wanna get into it but sadly know jack shit about actual fishing despite my dad and his dad literally growing up on the water. Time to make em proud and pick up another hobby.

Loving it SFB.

Dropped a sailboat on my flyrod this weekend. #Broken #justthetip

Thank god it was just a stupid 25 dollar eagleclaw, and that's what I'll replace it with. I can't have nice things.

Ive been trying to find places around here that hold lessons but all the lessons are after i go back to school.

lessons??

its not speed flying or hang gliding or diving

it's fishing using a rod designed to throw a line that typically has feathers fur and other materials attached.

the only way you can fail is to not enjoy the the time you spend doing it and the people and places you encounter/share.

if ya don't shoot

it's damn hard to put it in the net

I don't know any technique or even how to cast. I've tried watching some videos on youtube but it seems like it'd be easier to just have some hands on experience with someone teaching me. Idk I might go buy a shitty beginner set up and practice before I go to school in two weeks.

as a whole flyfisherman are pretty giving, you'd be surprised how many are willing to answer questions or offer help.

my grand dad taught me the basics which aint much more than 10-2 and loop control and line speed. Once you start to shoot line it becomes muscle memory.

akin to hitting a base or golf ball or making a powder turn or slarving.

unlike learning to read water currents and make presentations

you can learn to cast in any open space

i in turn taught my dad

Bought a kit at Dicks and started messin around with it today. How long of a line of leader should I have/ is there anything i'm missing besides the rod, reel, line and leader?

mom came to town headed up

the nickon aw120's restin on the bottom of the snake w/ the rest of the pics from that trips aint givin up hope but bought a cannon powershooter d20 and

headed up last week to row for the TU 5th annual one fly comp on the green.

the waning days of summer is a pretty time of year on the river

and the super vivid mode works well

IMG_0396_zpsee7f9ddd.jpg

prefished a few days w/ my pops and his team. He's funny stressin over the magic fly that could win it

he got high boat one year bobber watchin the surgilcal tubes wigglies worm one year but nymphin all day sucks

the hippie stomper got ate

IMG_0291_zps10b83f38.jpg
this little piggie ate fat alberts

IMG_0402_zpsbe34a615.jpg

b floated well and a few nice fish were willing to eat the big foam junk

IMG_20130629_080727_011_zps2fc9a556.jpg

next day floated from

IMG_0385_zps658681a3.jpg

the other 1/2 of the high country team w/ an old montucky guide and TU stalwart who is and has been crucial to the continued success of this event

IMG_0354_zps942b555f.jpg

fished tougher "B" but stunning fall day

plenty of 22 ish puesdos a few spinners and some sedge caddis and hoppers on the banks

but couldn't by an eat till 11:00ish although the bobber watchers were whackin em good

finally turned on and from secret rif 2 divin board was $$

IMG_0425_zpsfc813fb0.jpg

was really hopin to draw the hyde cats and row a nice new shinnies boat stead of the aged hog

IMG_0472_zps0bab9074.jpg

ende up w/ a happy valley homebuilder team who had won it a few years ago

their industry ringer's a falcon ledge stud, hell of a tyer, and good stick, the other guy had voli rowed it a few years

so they knew what they wanted to do to b in it 2 win it

the weather guessers been callin for weather all week and the morn dawned w/ some clouds n sprinkles

IMG_0467_zps7c9ae1fe.jpg

my dudes decided to both fish the same fly and Neil # 1 & Neil#2 would be the chosen ones they tied up the night before

IMG_0764_zps432b49ae.jpg

havin good sticks ,who wanted to get out of the boat and stalk em ment a much easier day than rowin soft hackle laps all day

IMG_0487_zpsaff3f0f1.jpg

although runnin tween the two nettin and measurin kept me busy

the way the scoring works is you can measure 2 fish @ a point an inch and every others a point.

so havin 4 fish tween 17- 19 measured and a 1/2 dozen dinks a piece fore noon and cottonwood camp boded well.

boys lit em up pretty well round grasshopper isle.

cool standing up above whatchin a big ole brown come up from the depths hover turn follow it down stream for a few yards then

EAT IT

IMG_0496_zps64362c39.jpg

bows were diggin on Neil too

IMG_0524_zps0b9bab96.jpg

hit red creek bout 3 w/ 2 hours left on the clock

had em rub the buddhas head and they got out n hammerfished ftw

travis highsticked pocket water a good 10 and jed a 1/2 dozen

most were dinker doodles

but a nice bow, and a 20" brownie from j gave em 5 big fish boner points

point shoot

IMG_0529_zps5ca495be.jpg

and

wait until next fish

IMG_0322_zps09a0279e.jpg

foul hookers don't count and negative bonus points if it's the guide

IMG_0532_zpsa23c536b.jpg

thankfully the 1 flies a single barbless and these cats had played the embeded in flesh game before

no blood no foul keep calm and fish on

IMG_0534_zps41e4d629.jpg

Neil # 2 got crackered off bout 4:57 for an extra hundy the boat can buy a single muligan and replace your fly

which they had but didn't bother for 3 minutes

dudes had a damn good day rackin up a good 120 sumthin puntos

The "A" fished super tough but Spence and the other dude held their own racked enough to give em the win by 13.

T finished w/ 22 which gave him most fish hardware

and interesting enough the cabelos ringer and arguably one of the best sticks in the usa, who usually takes that title,

won quickest loser donating his chosen one to the river goods an hour in

our boat was high boat so i gots me some fodder for he fishin room wall

IMG_0751_zps6bf5f229.jpg

i'd like to tell ya other than pickin good sticks out of the hat, a bunch of oar strokes and some spotting and nettin

my skills made it happen

but it's more like what wesley told woody after he done dunked

"Billy the sun shines on a dogs ass every now and then"

Great stuff once again SFB, you TGR guys really know how to throw a TR together. I hope to got one next weekend as I'm stealing my GF's old point and shoot and we are headed to the beach to go after some more blues and anything else that bites in the day or at night.

Might be moving to Montana next fall and i've always wanted to begin fly fishing. What is it I need? and what will it cost me to get started? I'm assuming I could just get a rod and reel combo and some fly bait and be set

Any advice on where to start? I've always wanted to fly fish. I did some regular fishing when I was younger. My dad loves fly fishing and I know he'd love if I got to the point where I could go with him.

First you need a rod and reel. Normally these rod and reel combos come with floating fly line so you'll be all set with that, rods and fly lines are classified by weights. For example a 3 weight rod is used for small flies where as a 9 weight rod will be used for large flies etc. So if you have a 3 weight rod you're going to need 3 weight fly line. I'd say a good all around weight would be 5 weight, so once you get a 5 weight rod and reel with 5 weight fly line you're half way there. Next you're probably going to want waders, pretty much with waters the more you pay the more comfort you get, I paid 60$ for my first pair of waders which weren't the most comfortable but they got the job done. The most expensive waders on the market are going to run you 700$-1000$, however you don't need to spend that kind of money to catch fish. So once you have your waders and fly rod and reel you're going to need flies. Flies differ per area and you're best off going to a local fly shop, there they will inform you on what's hatching and what you should be using, a fly will cost about 1$-3$. When it comes to tying on your fly you don't tie the fly directly onto the fly line, first your going to need a leader. A leader is attached onto your fly line using either a loop or a knot, and then the fly is tied onto the end of the leader. While you're in your local fly shop they will also help you select the correct leader for what you're fishing, a leader is like 5$. Once you have all of the above you should be good to go, all you have to do is get out on the water find some fish and learn from there on.

I do, for the time being. What do you need to know?

I'm planning on going there for a study away program next fall semester pretty much for the sole reason to fish. They also have a good ecology program. Any advice would be about msu, the bozeman area in general, or the fishing would be much appreciated

You picked a pretty good place to go fish bummin'. You probably already know about the well-known rivers around here, and I recommend visiting, but probably staying pretty well clear of them. The best bet for good fishing is the smaller creeks and streams, which are all wonderful in the fall. I ride my bike from town to fish 75% of the time (even now in December), and almost always have fantastic fishing. The Gallatin, Madison, and Yellowstone are all great rivers, but I honestly have way more fun just poking around the East Gallatin and its tributaries, and I still routinely catch 20" fish (often on my 3wt).

If you can get out here a week or two before school starts, you owe it to yourself to take a hike into the Beartooths. PM me around that time and I can probably tell you all about where to go, what to fish, etc. A lot of people around here (and everywhere, it seems) get super butthurt about sharing spots or flies, but I'm happy to know someone else is out enjoying the same places I do. Haters can eat a 9' floppy Orvis dick.

As far as the school goes, I actually happen to be in the Ecology department, but am likely leaving the state come spring. I haven't spent enough time in the program to give a really informative opinion about what to expect, but we do have a few great professors doing some really interesting research here.

yeah i've been doing a lot a reading about the area and I was under the assumption that the fish in the creeks were difficult to catch and never really got very big. I'm planning on driving from NH and I definitely wanted to do something like that before classes started. I was thinking about hiring a guide for a day or two and basically ask for a crash course of the bozeman area

That'd be cool, but it would cost you a small fortune. If you're into backpacking, you could spend a week catching cutties up to 24" in the Beartooths for about $150.
