FIS "Banning" No-Poles?

I agree with this decision but would immediately hit up the first comp with 15 inch poles just to piss them off
 
people really dropping into big air with their arms above their head like aerials? We should kick those people out of the sport completely.

I think this could limit a lot of creativity in the jib sections of slope courses. Don't pay much attention but anyone doing cool hand drag variations on rails/wallrides?

While they didnt outright ban no-poles, this is in the FIS judging criteria:

So yeah, it's pretty much mandatory to use poles now.
 
I mean riding skis 6” shorter than you also gives you a pretty big advantage, probably more then not riding with poles… seems like they should pull their heads out of their ass
 
Hilarious to think of a competitive sport where you are required to hold sticks while doing everything else that you are actually doing.
 
Did they specify any requirements that the poles have to meet? Cuz that’s where the funny business is gonna take place... Imagine getting DQ’d bcs your poles didn’t meet FIS specifications.

It's true that it's easier to grab future spins without poles. But banning what should be a free choice is stupid. To go in this direction without being so extreme, in my opinion, they should simply have introduced a reduction in points for those who don't use them.

they did do that, didn't you read the thread? in any case a reduction of points in essentially a ban, i would imagine that the scores are pretty close to one another.

i think you guys are forgetting that FIS is an official organization, not some small core brand that's like, chill and stuff. poles are integral for skiing and it's a crutch to not have to use them, im surprised fis ever allowed it. and plus skiing is way steezier with poles anyway.

I just don't think the point reduction should have been so extreme.

For example, if Antoine Adelisse wants to continue doing pre-nose switch triple, well, he could have, but instead of getting 90 when he does it right, he'd get 80. But in his particular case, I don't think I'll miss his style.

FIS fucked mogul skiing up a while back and people just don't want to see that happen to freeskiing. In case you are unaware, there was a lot of resistance to FIS having anything to do with freeskiing and this leans into them taking the free part out of freeskiing. Don't need to see skiing turn into gymnastics.

yeah i get that, and i kind of hinted at that in post, that FIS doesn't really even fit freeskiing. idk why they do it.

Lacrosse, tennis, field hockey, baseball, pole fault. Holding sticks to do what you are supposed to do. But in addition to it is a different story. And I don’t really care poles or no poles. I’m just imagining the abstract of trying to explain that to someone who knows nothing.

Crash range means basically no points. I wish it would be like a 10-20 point deduction though.

Jut looked through the guide and the only section that actually defines a minimum and maximum length is the nordic section. I do wonder if they'll make exceptions for people that have injured hands/wrists or if they'll make a broken wrist a season ender for a comp skier.

I mean the answer is as simple as poles being part of skiing. Without poles it's just aerials. In a sport like this, visuals are everything, and I've never heard a casual viewer ask "why do they use poles?", only the inverse. What is style for in a big air contest? It serves no purpose in landing tricks, but its (according to FIS) a judging criteria.

I see what you mean but it's just to level the playing field, it was either make them mandatory or remove poles completely.
 
The should be no restriction on poles/no poles. Just a couple additional difficulty points for grabs with poles and additional execution points for controlling poles in the same way you get points for not flapping your arms/legs. Not this “crash score” for riding no poles.

This would recognise the marginally increased difficulty of solidly grabbing holding a pole and making it look composed with a +1m stick in your hands.

Things I want to see:

a judging boycot of this rule if somebody drops in no poles

riders turning up with tiny poles

riders turning up with massive poles

riders turning up with a single pole, OG style.

the whole field of riders dropping in an immediately dumping their poles.

I doubt I will see any of these.
 
I think they should ban grabs instead.

I think all the naysayers are forgetting that competition needs structure in order to function. I also hope everyone actually read the article all the way through. The judges AND the skiers helped make this decision.
 
I think it's a bit of a weak argument as you could say the same thing about anything. Is it easier or harder to throw tricks with 5xl pants around your knees? Are they going to force Henrik to pull his pants up? Is it easier to huck on 80mm 150cm skis? Are we going to see height/ weight charts for ski sizing and fis approved park skis?

If anyone follows the freeski sweden youtube channel you’ll notice that their skiers have been asking for the mandatory poles thing (except for henrik lol). Seems like the rule is coming from pole users being upset that people are going no-poles because it’s easier. Still think it should be an automatic 5 point deduction or something and not a crash score smh

Yeah I like this because its more incentivizing using poles and recognizing that it is harder to grab with them rather than placing limitations on not using them. It should be more like in diving where its harder to do a dive in pike position compared to a tuck. Keeps it free and leaves the choices to the athletes.

It would be hilarious to see riders holding poles till the last jump and then throwing them to the side in order to do a hard grab or pre nose. Thats rooted in freeskiing culture cause its how every kid tries their first front flip lol

Last I heard, the rule is that poles must touch the ground with your arms extended.

FIS will probably put this in writing at some point, but I think everyone is working with arm length at the moment. You can still run pretty short poles, but no micro sticks

Aren't a majority of film skiers ex-comp kids to some degree? Almost all my fav skiers besides like Zahner were in academies and if poles is the standard and they're forced to progress while using them it'll probably trickle into the film scene to some degree as they move away from competing. Not that poles vs no poles really matters its just interesting to think about, especially since it was only 10 years ago that Tom was tanking comps for not using them, crazy how short that lasted
