The Hungarian coach said that they are not looking for people to compete from other countries, but if somebody comes with a quota and already have a nationality, you cant say to them you cant compete. They only saw a video and the fact that she has enough races to qualify for the Olympics. Obviously they had no reason to say no.

Yo I've been training at the UOP ramps every summer since I was like 12 years old and EVERYONE knows who Liz is. I think she showed up to TRY OUT JUMPING during my second or third summer and that's when she was still going for skeleton.
For Liz, this was never about halfpipe skiing or skeleton back in 2014, this is about her being able to posses the title of "Olympian." That's what its always been about. I'll try and find the link and post it later but she either started or helped to start a company that built an app that connects you with "pro" level coaches all over the world for a bunch of different sports and then has you pay almost exorbitant amounts of money to receive advice that you could get from your local grom coach. For someone who doesn't know Liz, seeing her face posted up on the coaches list as a "world cup halfpipe skier" wouldn't really be a big deal except she's not really a WC level halfpipe skier is she? She just gamed her way through an inherently broken system to gain the title.
Over the 8 years that Liz jumped at the UOP, I can tell you with 100% honesty that she progressed from barely being able to do straight airs off of the single kicker to doing "frontflips" to her ass off of the freeride kicker after taking 20 steps down, effectively going the same height and distance that she did on single. Maybe some 360s too. Let it also be known that nothing she does on ramps has ever been transferred to snow. Like I said earlier, deep down she doesn't give a fuck about the sport (or progression thereof) of women's halfpipe skiing. She didn't really give a fuck about the sport of skeleton either. If she did, she would have realized that truly making the Olympics in a fashion that not only pushed her own boundaries of comfort and skill but also elevated the sport as a whole was just not in the cards for her.
Over those 8 years I saw her training at the UOP I saw countless other people who started at the same skill level as her progress into being pretty fucking amazing jumpers for aerials, moguls, and freeride. Not once did any of them talk about how it was all about the Olympics, although a few of them are competing in Korea. It was always about getting out there and learning some cool new shit that you'd never done before and were kinda scared to try and hanging out with your friends. The whole point of the exercise for most of them wasn't to fulfill any future Olympic dream, but to go out, send your meat, and do something dope for the cute tourists watching from the upper deck.
This is a really personal issue for me for a few reasons. One, because I think it gives the wrong image of freestyle skiing to the public. At that level of competition, just like any other elite level, the point of the contest (and training for it) isn't to play it safe and just do what you need to move on, the point is to push yourself as hard as you can, to take risks, and to leave everything you have out on the snow. It's bullshit to think that there's some kook somewhere is saying "oh woah these athletes aren't that skilled, all they did was play the system just like that Swaney girl did!" Our sport isn't a fucking joke, and its shitty to think people think of it as one because of her. Two, while there was progression, a decade is more than enough time to progress past a front flip and a barely passable 360 on water. If anything, its indicative of how little she cared about true progression or about actually trying to compete and push herself at the highest level. Three, the amount of coaching she took away from kids who were actually pushing, progressing, and doing it just because they loved skiing is bullshit. Having a coach split between a ton of athletes and getting bits and pieces from them while they're trying to manage coaching other athletes is hard enough as it is. But when someone who makes the exact same mistakes over and over again without ever fixing them asks for extra, private coaching just to do the same exact two shitty tricks over and over again without ever improving? That's infuriating, especially when you realize how much it costs to come up and ramp for the summer and that you get maybe 20 jumps a day if you're lucky.

This isn't a new thing. In swimming, for example, countries without a single pool still have to select an athlete to compete. They invariably get slower times that an average canadian or american 12 year old but they're still representing their country at the olympics, and they're still stoked to be doing it. This girls doing the same thing, just twisting the system to her advantage. Respect imo.

Seems like a lot of folks want to compare this to Eric Moussambani swimming in 2000. Please, the differences couldn't be any more stark. In case y'all didn't realize, aside from oil monies, Equatorial Guinea is a poor ass country at the mercy of a corrupt despot. Beyond that, Eric got in on a lottery; he hadn't swam prior to getting into the Olympics. You read that right. We cheered for him because he had only been swimming for a couple of months in total, and gave it his all completely alone in the pool. He didn't have the trainers, coaches, dietitians, world-class training facilities, support of his government, finances to make it all happen. None of that. After all that, even the IOC was like "yea, that was a bit much" and stopped that program. What's impressive is he trained afterwards to get much better, shaving a minute from his time, aiming for a bit of redemption and face-saving in 2004 (but the government was like... nah). Effort. Respect.
When we look at Swaney we have none of that. We have a spoiled narcissist that gamed the system. It wouldn't be so bad, except she tried this before... with a completely different sport. AND SHE HAS BEEN DOING IT FOR YEARS. She has the time and means to travel the world to attend these competitions. Has access to coaching and training facilities. What does she do? The same thing every time: up the wall, don't fall. There is no effort. There is no attempt at effort. She played the system. Good for her? I guess the silver lining is there will be, just like with Moussambani, future changes so this doesn't happen again. Spence and Belanger were diplomatic in their response but the sentiment was clear: this is bullshit.
Naturally, there are others in the Olympics that jump through some hoops for various reasons. We saw the German pair skating team of Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot last week. Neither are from Germany, but we don't give them shit (well, maybe a little) because they COMPETE (and there are various reasons too). There are plenty of others that use something like dual-citizenship to squeak in where they might not otherwise be able to qualify. It may not be ideal, but for fucks sake it is nowhere near as egregious as this. Stop trying to normalize it. Ignore and ostracize it, instead.

Its not the fact that she found the flaw in the system that irritates me, its the perceived lack of effort. When you've been training for as long as she has with coaching and the financial means to travel the world, the potential is there if you put the effort in. If she was trying 5s or something and fell, that'd be more respectable. This proves that just because someone can afford coaching, it doesn't mean they're going to be good. Case and point: me. I blew a whole season at a well known ski academy fucking around and not putting in effort and waiting for tricks to happen without really trying that hard. I think its the same shit happening here, except I got my shit together the season after and this lady has been stuck in that mental state for the past 5 years (at least).

We know what we know and our opinion of women's skiing won't be swayed or changed drastically. However, I'm really sorry to all the girls out there. A girl like Swaney competing drags the whole average of the competition down, all-of-the-sudden girls have to prove their worth even though they just competed in an Olympic event. Outsiders don't get it and that's where the problem arises. Keep this girl off snow, she's cancer.

It's pretty lame but on a side note the announcing was hilarious on her run. They didn't even know what to say. I'm surprised they held it together and weren't just like, what the fuck is this person doing? Did somebody poach the course?

you know where this hinders the sport, is when I showed it to teh guys I work with who dont ski. Their first reaction was always "shes good enough to go to the olympics?" its only hindering the sport of womens halfpipe which already gets so much flack. Every skier knows oh she cheated the system just to get a bib and a story. But for non skiers, the people who maybe never thought about skiing but are like oh shit, that looks super cool, watch taht and go "are you fucking kidding me? thats one of the best female skiers? what a joke"
