Earth Hour

Hey everybody!

This Saturday, March 28th, is Earth Day! Boo Ya, the planet kicks ass, right?

Lets help give mother earth a little bit of an energy break by turning out the lights for 1 whole hour from 8:30 to 9:30 PM as a part of 'Earth Hour'. It's an organized voting poll, where your light switch is your ballot! Leave it on to vote for YES on global warming, or flick it off to vote NO and save our snow!

It's about time we all start acting together to help change the future of our planet, so don't forget! Vote NO on global warming!

Check out more information on it here:

Funny how we live on earth 8760 hours a year and it is hard for most people to unplug for just 1 hour.

yessss everyone get on it.they are hoping for 1billion votes right??heres being optimistic but NS could contribute 100,000 or so hahah

this is great. I hope people can do this for 1 hour. just unplug all your stuff and go skiing, I dont care if your hill isnt open.

i think i'll leave all my lights on and drive my gas guzzling SUV through residential streets instead. Oh wait, I already do that.

just make sure that while the lights are off and its pitch black with nothing to do you dont have sex.

afterall what if you slip one past the goalie, now you have just actively contributed to an over populated un sustainable world.

why all the hate? its ONE hour. ONE. is it really that hard?

Basketball will be replayed for days, hippies don't need to be the only ones left who care, its not green its just a good idea, and boning in the dark is fun...you've always got abortion. AND i kinda wanna ski powder when i'm 50, so help out.

Arrogance is way worse than ignorance - don't be stupid.

who said ya couldn't hike lol. but yea dude you are right. Its something that needs to be fixed in the industry, well everybody needs to rethink energy use

I will be at work until 8 and driving from 8:40, but I will have my desktop / laptop and all other electronics turned off all day saturday while at work.

I usually keep my desktop running 24x7.

I try and be as power efficient as possible everywhere. It costs too much to keep shit running 24x7.

Try owning a hot tub once.

i think that the concept is great and im all for saving the environment, but the fact is even if we turn off all our electronics and sit in the dark for one hour its not gonna make much of a difference. the electricity companies are still gonna produce it and any surplus that they have they are gonna sell to make money. so ask yourself is it really gonna make that much of a diffrence

I think the point of this is to show (vote) with our dollars (put your money where your mouth is).

To show that you want to have less of a carbon footprint.

Get a buncha people worldwide to do it, and you can make a big deal. It grabbed newspaper headlines citing shit about how power plants seen a 30% reduction in energy usage in a matter of minutes.

This is the kind of shit where a politician might see it and they could feel better about not supporting coal burning power plants.

Imagine living in L.A. or a city in China where you have air quality concerns and smog?
Beijing%20Olympics%202008%20smog%20pollution%201.jpg

Being from the midwest here I see that and think...that looks like fog or something. But its really pollution.

This is a vote of support for an idea of having less of a carbon footprint, being more energy efficient, blah blah blah.

This is a P.S.A. to auto makers, politicians, and everyone else in the dirty energy business.

The whole idea wasnt conceived to try to instantly save the world...thats just not realistic in one hour a year. Its more of a way to try to get a grasp of the power usage and show how easy it really is to put a dent in the amount of resources we use. Lots of people are doing things on the personal level to keep their individual power bill down and what not, but until the effects are shown on a large scale its hard (nearly impossible) to for people to wrap their heads around the type of figures that make up entire populations.
Simple psychology about groups shows that when people see themselves as a member of a group, they dont see their effects as being very important to the big picture. So until you can get the group to do something that can shock the system a little bit its hard to convince the individuals to make some personal changes.
So you're right, this one hour isnt going to immediately change the world. But it will offer some statistics, some visual data, some publicity, and will help the 'group' get a better idea of big picture. And once that information can be brought down to a level the individual can better understand it will be much easier to introduce/adopt the new technologies that are ready for the markets and not only help persuade the people that can help get these projects underway, but get more and more people backing the ideas.

there are only two reasons one would do this:

1. fear or ridicule for not doing it

2. The belief that they are actually making a difference with this. Which, is basically reduced to symbolism since one hour WILL NOT make a difference in whether global warming happens or not. And this, symbolically will not make a difference.

The only results from this are:

1. Increased crime-It's fucking dark, people can do shit, and what about the homeless?

2. Electricity costs go up. Its happened before with droughts in cities where people consume less water or other utilities. Governments receive less revenue from sales and taxes from the decreased usage so taxes are raised. You wont save money from this, you will lose it.

Oh, and in the dark, people start having sex(look at 9 months after a large power outage), more sex, more babies then you add to the carbon footprint of the world. well done earth hour.

But seriously, its just stupid to see so many people enamored in meaningless ideas that WILL NOT make an actual difference. You're going to feel a lot better by doing this right? "I'm saving the environment. I'm doing something great!" You are all conformists. You are sheep. SHEEP!

I will turn on all my lights, all the lights I need.

its true, 1 night of the year does nothing but conceive unwanted children haha.

BUT, at least if people see the light! or not, for one night of the year. hopefully it inspires people to do it more regularly and conserve 52 nights of the year, thats why its important. Some people need to be reminded once a year not to waste electricity.

haha
1. The homeless...REALLY??? How much energy do the homeless really use, Id love to see some stats?
2. Thats the point, we need to make some changes, that yes right now might be cut backs, but are there so that there is room for the future growth. Or we can do nothing and reach the peak that would actually cause this 'draught' you are worried about. Look at the history of the stock market. Things have to 'crash' or get cut back to allow the change and restructuring that is needed to allow continuous growth. There are very few systems that can sustain constant, let alone exponential, growth over long periods of time. We are going through this right now with our economical system, it peaked and got cut back, and is now going through some restructuring. And it will crash again when the new system becomes insufficient.
3. The number of 'accidental' children is such a small percentage. Its normally a decision to have a child. But maybe you are still trying to confuse or trick (since that seems to be your technique after reading your post) a girl to sleep with ya, haha, and didnt know that. But keep uncontrollably jacking off every time the lights go out if thats all it really takes for ya. Cause last time I checked sex was fun, not solely a baby maker. For most people, only a couple times they have sex their ENTIRE lives ends up as a baby, but Im sure this one hour will drastically change this statistic. Shit, I dont have any kids yet because its pretty easy to avoid making that mistake.
Try some arguments that arent full of ignant holes...its interesting hearing other peoples views on social change though.
And read my first post...you obviously didnt

I personally am not partaking in this. I will not say you shouldn't, but as far as I am concerned, I'm not sure what it will accomplish.

There are much better things we can be doing to "save" the planet. Think about how much money went into making "Earth Hour" and what better uses it could of had.

You want to actually make a difference? Do something that will last. Don't just turn your lights off for an hour then forget about it.

i normally turn off my electronics and lights for a few hours when i go to sleep anyways, or when i leave the house. not to mention that it wastes more power to turn incandescent bulbs on and off than it does to leave them on.

First off, I did read your post. I thought it was the only one that was relatively good. I just didn't address it in my post. I guess I will with this one. You completely misunderstood many of my points.

1. Homeless. It's not an issue of energy usage. It's an issue of safety. It's not limited to homeless either. Its the idea of the streetlights of the city going off, the parking lot lights of the store going off, and its about the notion of safety that light gives one when one is walking down a street(Streets with lights on in the homes where people are actively engaged with the street prove to have lower crime rates than those where homes are concealed from the streets. In this case lights off gives the impression no ones home). Again, its a safety issue.

I am not worried about a drought. Again, another point you clearly misunderstood. It's an example of how costs will only increase with utilities when there is a decrease in demand. Cities lose revenue from it and raise taxes to compensate. This is from when there was a drought in Durham and Raleigh, NC. It's very simple, and i already explained it.

[Stop reading if you just want to read about earth hour. this is somewhat unrelated]

You have a very distorted view of the stock market and restructuring. This earth hour is about global warming and the false idea that humans are responsible. I dont see the direct relevance to the stock market. Anyways, our economic system does not need to be restructured. Many parts of THE NEW DEAL (although some helped), PROLONGED THE DEPRESSION BY 7 YEARS. All that needs to happen is a break on capital gains taxes, and corporate taxes reduced by a lot to encourage spending and investment. (Corporations by the way, basically do not pay taxes. They pass those taxes on to their employees by lay offs, decreased salaries. They also pass it on to consumers by raising prices and other ways too). The problem with our economy was the government interfering with banks with loans and such. If all that bullshit hadn't happened, we wouldn't be here today. I guess if there's a restructuring needed, its that. But the restructuring is THE GOVERNMENT GETTING OUT OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR.

3. accidental children. It's going to happen. It happens with power outages. It is small. It wasn't a very serious point, to be honest, just something to think about. AND ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS? You're really going ad hominem with this? "But maybe you are still trying to confuse or trick (since that seems to be your technique after reading your post) a girl to sleep with ya" Considering the fact that I could still be a virgin and waiting till marriage didn't cross your mind...(Oh but this kid doesn't believe in earth hour. HE MUST BE A RAPIST!)vvI don't even see where you get this. It has no relevance to the argument at hand and it shows your lack of class, integrity, and ability to make a strong argument. At least stay on point. It's obvious its a decision to have a child. But you dont think shit happens? Look at the disgusting number or abortions done each year. Either a lot of people didn't mean to have babies, or there is an exceptionally large population of people who change their minds very often. This one hour will have more people having sex. and there will be an increase, maybe not by much, but there will be an increase. watch.

4. You used the word ignant...seriously? dont attack my arguemts. use a real word and stop being a conformist.

Finally Your other post...

While I understand what your saying about seeing the results of everything on a large scale. This isn't the same thing. Not even remotely close. I dont think showing results from one hour with many people not turning on lights is applicable both realistically and scientifically to compare with other data on a broad range of electrical usage. I somewhat agree with your point, but thinking of people seeing the results from this little project, I dont think, will really translate to people reducing their energy usage altogether. Its completely different to call for everything to be turned off than for things you dont need-to be turned off.

"help persuade the people that can help get these projects underway, but get more and more people backing the ideas."

this quote to me is kind of scary. At what point in the persuading does the government step in and say, " Mandatory power outages at this time, or you can only comsume this much electrity." Obama has already said something similar,

"We could set up systems so that everybody in each house have their own smart meters that, uhh, will tell you when to turn off the lights."

When does it get to the point where the government is turning your lights off for you? That's what he's offering about these smart meters. They are going to have government mandates requiring you to switch to these. (it will be free. exactly like going to digital tv). people will think its great. It will just end in more government control of YOU, of all the people. We do not need to live in fear of the government. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD FEAR US.

I forgot this.

Tell me who is conducting the research and the numbers of this and who is going to say how much electricity was saved. It isn't on their website.

The point of earth hour, as they say is to vote for the earth or global warming, which is such a stupid idea in the first place.

if youre an NS photographer type, go out and take some pictures!

ps. thats not mine lol

Why? We aren't causing global warming, the earth cycle is. Global warming is just an attempt to try and make you feel guilty. Every single person can turn their lights off, yet you will see no effect on the temperature. We're coming out of an ice age. There's nothing you can do to alter the earth cycle, get over it.

CO^2 is a very small percentage of the global warming problem. Something like 1% of the earth's gas is only CO^2.

What is a big fucking problem is how fast we are killing the ozone layer (or O^3).

The earth is naturally warming up. We cannot tell for good or worse how human is playing a role, but what we do know is that killing the ozone layer will definitely fuck things up.

People in Australia already have extremely high rates of skin cancer due to them having shit for an ozone layer above them.

the hole in the ozone layer is also natural. it naturally opens and closes at different times of the year.

that doesn't have much to do with my point.

that would be global warming. global warming was the answer there.

not that i think its human caused.

It's cool. I work at an ISP larger than you can imagine, and I will personally be reducing operating costs by 43% on Saturday evening for my location. Our electricity bill is about 30 times that of an average 3000 square foot house.

I surely think the electricity company will notice my usage decrease, before your usage increase. Which will be minimal...because what do you own besides the notebook and ipod your parents got your for your birthday.
