Dumbest thing a shop guy has ever said to you....

I'm a big dude 6'3'' 180 lbs and I was about to demo scratches at blue mt. He says I will probably put you in a 169 and I was like dont you have anything bigger? I eventually convinced him that I was big enough and could easily ski 180s but the biggest they had was 174. He could not believe that I wanted to ski 180s hes like "you must be a damn good skier being able to ride a ski that big."

Dont remember exactly what sizes were but it was around that.

same thing happened to me with my t-halls!! boy was i pissed off...i just skeid them anyway, but this year im gunan remount them

Dude, I hate Dicks. In many ways. My friend worked as a shoe salesman there and was chill with the "ski tech". So he offered to take my skis in and get a core shot fixed for free. I got them back, and the guy decided to use a bright yellow Ptex because "it matched the yellow on my scratch fs and looked really cool". It's not a huge deal but it is jsut like wtf, are you that retarded. The bases are black and it would have been easy to make the core shot barely noticable and instead now my skis have a huge dayglo yellow patch on the base.

Exactly, moral of the story is to find a local shop. If you know your shit you won't walk into a dick's or sports chalet to buy your skis. New definition for gaper anybody...?

Two things.

Dick's mounts skis? News to me. I didn't even know they sold skis.

Secondly, 99% percent of a ski shop employees customers are gapers or people who don't know anything about anything. Keep this in mind when you talk to them.

Shops make their money off gapers, rentals, or just off the general skiing public who doesn't know anything about any gear.

whenever i go to a ski shop, im obviously looking at the twins. usually an employee will come and talk to me about park skiing and skis and stuff and its all good. i like those kinda shops.

or theres ones where a gaper will come and tell you that you need stiffer skis and that racing pwns all

K2 Coomba (doug coombs memorial ski) is great for skiing Stratton. It was made for the conditions you ski at stratton

I've got my shop, which only deals with freeskiing (some snowboarding to because he just has to since in Belgium people still look weird when a young guy says he skis) and (kite)surfing during summer. The owner is real cool guy, knows what he's talking about and is a freeskier himself, he has learned me a bunch of stuff in the past 3 years, like introducing me to twintip skiing by giving me a pair of twins for free for 2 weeks. When I got my boots last year he actually let me take 5 hours to get me the right one (not that he had to fit me a 100 boots, he just let me put on 2 different ones of for a long time, then I decided on one, had to put both on of the same on... walk around another long time... that for only 4 different boots) and then custom altered the outershell and soles for no extra charge, he told other customers who required more of his time then a quick sale to come back at a later time.

It's a 2 hour drive from here, but I go there a couple of times a year just to have a chat about stuff... sometimes I end up buying something, sometimes not...

I have no idea what you guys would call a good shop, but this qualifies as one for me!

Ok what I was actually going to... if I read some of these stories I'm surprised you guys still go to these places, find one like I described above! But do jump in with the other ones so you can fuell us with some great stories haha

thats a good shop, fo sho.

anyways, the next time someone tells you to ride shorter skis and you laugh at them, consider this. almost everyone on this site is latched into the big ski fad. when anyone suggests shorter skis people say "they look stupid." as if you can tell a cigarette's length difference and that somehow makes things look cooler. just keep in mind you should be skiing on what feels best. if youre 6 foot and 150 lbs, you should not be riding 180s. but I see people doing so all the time.

whatever, its only making things harder for them.

i was just at a ski sale this past weekend. i picked up a pair of last years mojo 80s which are sick. and im looking, and i see fujatives over there for like $160. they are the wood grain base ones, ive always liked those ones. and some dude comes over and conversation ensues

him: you dont want those skis

me: uh why?

him: do you ski in the park?

me: sure do

him: they are stiff as a board

me: are you talking about the fujatives?

him: yeah man, they suck in park theyre like 2x4's

me: yeah okay man...whatever

him: im not an idiot, i know what im talking about you little punk

me: alright man, *i rip the tape on the skis and flex the ski and basically double it over*. now what were you saying?

him: musta been a bad ski or something....

i was ready to fucking kill this guy.

so one time my bro goes to get his addicts mounted. he specifically says that he wants one side to be the front and one side to be the back, and they get it wrong.

but other than that the 2 shops that i go to have been really good. they dont gimme any shit about mounting true center or w/e

I took my Chronic Blends to basically the only ski shop in DC (within the district that is) and I wanted them mounted forward just a little. The recommended mount was -8.5cm from center, but I wanted them where I had my old Chronics at -5cm (it's really not very far forward at all compared to other skis). The shop guy gives me the 3rd degree, asking me all these questions about why I want them that far forward, telling me it will ruin the skis. He finally agrees to just do it where I want it. Then he tells me, "some people want their skis mounted in weird places now. We actually had a guy come in who wanted his skis mounted IN THE CENTER, can you believe it? there is absolutely no reason to do that." Amazingly, they actually mounted where I asked them and not at the recommended, lucky me. And the guy wasn't even old or anything. He should have experience with this, being in a shop with a decent selection of twin tips.

"I know what I'm talkin about you little punk"

wow, I would have thrown up such an argument with this douche bag...people are idiots

i walked in to a sport mart asking if they had any lines or armada just for kicks and the guy had no idea what i was talking about and i told them they were twin tips he then said theres no need for twin tips and then showed me a pair of techno pros that were 20 cms to short telling me they're perfect for me

That right there is a good shop.

There is a shiesty shop in my town. I've never been told anything ridiculous by anyone, but I won't buy any shit from them because it is all overpriced like crazy and the owner is a massive douche.

If any of you know of Peter Glenn. It's a shitty chain gaper ski store with stores in the southeast, vermont and I think alaska. I went there to get my 01(maybe 00) 1080 vincent dorion pros mounted This is in 2004. I asked them to be mounted at 6+ or something in front of the recommended mount(like 1.5 behind center, cant remember). heres the rest of the conversation

shop guy: "Are you sure"

me "yes."

shop guy "why do you want them mounted so far forward"

me "I want to ride switch"

shop guy: "I dont know about this"

me"Im sure, just mount it at the line I made with a sharpie"

shop guy: "Alright fine, but that's gonna void any warrenty you have on those"

me "These skis are from 2001. They have compressed and cracked edges."

shop guy, ok well have them ready for you in a week

Amazingly, they mounted them right.

after reading all of this about dumb people at shops, im going to do the opposite and say i love my shop, the old shop i used to go to would question me alot, but as many have said 99% of their customers are gaypers, but the new shop i go to lets me do what i want, helps me special order alot of shit and gives me sick prices. I only have two "complaints" because the twin tip marker is for younger people they never carry twins over 175, but they have never had a problem getting any ski that me or a friend have needed, and the guy thought my FKS bindings were teli bindings haha

htre shop i got to(sports creel) is super legit, back when i was kinda a racer kid i gotpro level race boots that you oculd only get in france for $70, i still ski them cuase theyve softened up a lot now, but they give everyone good deals and are all super knowledgable

every time i go get a fat pair of skis mounted they never actually believe they're mine... they're always like you're a 5'4 chick and you're skiing 179 madens? or more recently when i got my hellbents mounted. it's so annoying. and, i live in boulder. you'd think they may be somewhat used to seeing girls who ski pretty hard.

wait... someone that is 6 foot and 150 should NOT be riding 180s? that sounds perfect for a park ski for that sized person, to me, if not a tad short.

It's all personal preference, not just a fad. There is also a very viable performance issue having to do with skis that are too short.

I mean Rich is a midget but he spins 630s on 176's like nothing.

the things that gets me about a lot of these stories is how rude/pushy the employees are to the customers. customer service anyone?

its hard though man. like when i work i just say hey guys, need any help? no? no worries just give me a shout. but if your not selling shit actively, the bosses notice. its tough, but i try to be really unassuming and mellow when selling shit

I hate it when guys in shops talk shit on every brand they don't carry, I had one guy in a kind of yuppy sports dhop tell me that Armada skis were made by a couple potheads in their garage, and the only ski woth spending $$$ on was Volkl. Sho nuff, I went back to the same shop this yr and the same guy tried to sell me a pair of ANT's, and told me that Armada was the cutting edge of the sport, just cuz his shop started carrying tham.

Speaking of armada, i guess thats the only thing round house in bozeman pissed me off about, they all are like "armada skis suck, they fall part and are POS" just because i ran over a bunch of rocks and fucked up my JJs.

I justo overheard this but at this really bad shop in my town this guy was trying to sell some chick screams and he was like these skis are 78 in the waist so that's super fat and they're gonna float really well in powder

hmm. i co-oped a sports store last year. i ended up selling a few kids snowboards and i was kinda bullshitting. i hope there are no threads like this on me.

Ive had really good experience with our shop in town. Everyone there is pretty chill and pretty much know what theyre talking about. Only thing is its the ONLY ski shop in town, and they don't mount certain bindings. So now I have to go to Scheels to get mine mounted. But since they are a sporting goods store im a little skeptical now.

Haha, I wasn't going to go naming names.

But that Shop just straight up blows.

I feel bad because I have a buddy that worked there, and he tried hooking me up, but I had to turn him down because overall the owner is such a massive douche.

hhahaa he went to sports page and was looking at the stl's, the guy at the shop was a douche so jc was fucking around wtih him, he like "wow those skis hve tips on both ends! omg! i bet if you were real good you could go backwards!"

so i went into my shop one day after riding for a little cause i noticed the plastic piece around my 912's cracked, s my heelpiece was ripping up a little. I bring them into the shop, the guy looks and them and goes "this is real bad man" he starts fiddling around with the lever that slides the heelpiece off, he breaks out a little metal piece cause he had no idea what he was doing, he couldnt get the heelpiece off because he wasnt lifting up the lever enough, so he puts the tail on the ground, holds them up and TAKES OUT A FUCKING HAMMER! he starts banging on the heelpiece, by this time the screwdriver fell out that he was trying to hold up the lever with. he puts them back on the table, proceeds to tell me that i warped my baseplate and tries to get me to buy some markers.

what the hell is with ski people and trying to get people to buy marker bindings? they must never ski them, ive been told that by like 15 different shop guys and i just walk away, even my dad hates them and hes like a 43 year old gaper, not really just like 80's steeze with neon and tight pants, but he shreds hard as hell

haha i had the same reaction idk why i thought that was so funny. On the other hand ive never really had a bad experience you guys need to go to better shops, expecially people who are talking about mounting skis at fucking dicks.

guy:were do u want ur skis mounted

me: true center

guy:o...core center

me:no true center

guy:there the same thing it doesnt matter
