Dubai and Ski Dubai

Yes i know theres been many threads on this place but 90% of them have their facts wrong and talk about a load of shit.

Firstly im going to talk about ski Dubai because hey, its a ski forum right! This place has gone from strength to strength in the few years its been open. Before Ski Dubai was here the was maybe one boarder and afew skiiers, now its a different story, 50% of the population can ski but maybe only 10% have ventured on trips outside of the UAE and its indoor slope. Some guys have grown and got better with sponserships and things like that, the volcom team including terje came and did a training sesh with out boarders and big events are in the development stages. The park pt up on freestyle nights is also arguably the best in the world, with many new features and some okish kickers. Here are some pics to help give you and idea of our setup-

And a kicker

and one skiing (Boarders outnumber skiiers by 10-1 here)

So comment and try to tel me how to promote skiing in a better way here too please!

p.s Alchohol is allowed here

Yeah i read alot of that, thats why i said 90% of the facts on here about Dubai are wrong, because all those threads have wrong facts, i laughed at the person who said Duabi had no alchohol so bad, real ROFL moment.

If your talking about the park itself, you try putting a big kicker or something like that indoors, it wont work will it! someone will hit the roof and that will be the end of Ski Dubai, Next time think man.

The best way for one person to promote the sport IMO is to just ride as much as possible. Get out there and kill it, be friendly and outgoing to other skiers and suggest where they can find twins is theyre interested.

Explain. I'm tired of being raped at the gas pump while I see these UAE assholes build the most extravagant shit I've ever seen at our expense. Dubai in 93 looked worse than Baghdad. I'd rather support tourism to another part of the world that needs the money.

I don't think he's trying to get people from other countries to come to Dubai, I think he's trying to get people from Dubai to go skiing.

Isn't the whole point of the city Dubai to be a giant tourist destination? I don't think Arabs give a shit about rails, kickers, or even snow for that matter.

actually they made all their money from reinvesting oil profits. oil is now a small part of their gdp.

but i think ski domes are a huge waste of money and energy. not to mention, ur park that "is the best in the world" is complete shit.

i sometimes dreamed about being a shaper down there. i was this season here in austria, so i liked the idea to have a totally different environment when you leave this hall

I hope you realize too that the UAE citizens traffic in Eastern European girls to use as sexual slaves. Their judicial system is worthless. Don't support this country.

One story.

when she arrived in Abu Dhabi she

was taken to a brothel where a pimp told her that he had bought her for $7000.

From that moment on she was to work as a prostitute until she paid off her

so-called debt. After three months of captivity, Tanya managed to escape. She

bolted to a police station and recounted her story. Incredibly, she was

charged with prostitution and sentenced to three years in a desert prison. In

2001, psychologically crushed and ashamed, Tanya was released. Nothing

happened to her pimp. Branded a prostitute by the Muslim nation, she was

summarily deported back to her Ukraine.

Did you read about what he wrote. 90% of the population has now skied. That's many more people that have been introduced to the sport, and many more that can contribute to our sport. Who gives a fuck if they make money off oil. The main population of Dubai may benefit from oil, but they dont chose what the oil prices are. Stop being such a prick.

I've heard the lift ticket prices are around $100 american, is this true?

as sad as that story is, that shit happens in america too u fool. oh, and just a side note, its the americans who glorified pimp culture, deff not the arabs!

pimps and prostitution have both been along for WAY longer than America... so dont think that americans started it and dont think that they were the ones to glorify it either....

honestly... are you 12?

dude, please, chiiil, i was just pointing out that human trafficing happens in america too.

the guy said:

''I hope you realize too that the UAE citizens (actually just a handfull of thugs) traffic in Eastern European girls to use as sexual slaves. Their judicial system is worthless. Don't support this country.''

i just wanted to point out that that was a lame argument.

and there is a big difference between prostitutes (like the ones that are legit in many countries like holland) and sex slaves (like the ones mentioned in the story above). im almost 12...

"one of the best parks in the world" and i thought my park sucked until i saw that. but its sweet you guys have a park and can ski!

that would be because of the vast amount of foreign investors that flocked to dubai, this could very well be the case for baghdad in 15 or 20 years.

Haha sorry for putting the best park in the world, I meant best INDOOR park in the world, and try not to make this thread an argument from arab haters, cause arabs have steeze too.

you ignorant guys are intense....

first of all i have been reading and following newschoolers for ages, prolly like 4 years almost every day so im no noob.

second, i currently live in CT (just moved back home where i grew up from Bend, OR. i wore the purple striped special blend jacket up at bach all the time) and my family lives in Dubai. i grew up in ct and am an a regular 21 year old alcohol loving college student.

my father is pakistani (my mom is white) and so therefore i have a unique and comprehensive view of the arab and western worlds. i am well traveled and not a close minded westerner. i spent 3 weeks in dubai last summer (right after the forum/foursquare team was at ski dubai)

that being said, dubai is very cosmopolitan and accepting. about 94 percent (i think) of the country is expatriate, although that number is misleading because of the large amount of pakistani indian and bangledeshi workers, as well as the large philipino population who dominate the service industries. there are also many many people from all over the world who are professionals. European woman in tiny tanks walk right next to arab women in abiyas (phonetic haha). the common thread is that they probably both have 100 carats on their hands. there are no beheadings ignorant fool, and alcohol is there just hard to find (that means no liquor stores except the airport, and drinks out are uncommon).

to the original poster....

ski dubai was cool, although here on newschoolers you are talking to skiers who generally like to ski park (powder being and obvious no mention here considering ski dubai).

ski dubai's park was terrible to the average skier. i brought all my gear halfway around the world in the summer and got there and there was one 25ft flat down pvc pipe thing, one 15ft box, and a 15ft jump (it was a gap though guys haha sick). the park has to have real rails, and a jump that is a little bigger. the other problem was ski patrol. they wouldnt let anybody hit the jump unless a patroller was there. i was there 4 times and only hit the jump one time, and i begged everybody there to open the jump.

i had to ask my daddy to yell at somebody so they would send somebody to open the jump. there was supposed to be a freestyle night, a competition on the jump with prizes. cancelled. i understand the safety concerns of the jump because i saw a skier (local) WRECK themselves on it. he didnt make the gap to you guys on here, it was hilarious . but, the jump has to be bigger for anyone who has every skiied before to be an actual draw. nobody on here wants to go all the way to dubai just to make two turns (i skied from top to bottom switch in 8 seconds).

there is much promise for ski dubai to become a draw for park skiers and boarders, you just have to put something to draw them there. i saw a video where there was a SICK stepdown gap made for the forum foursquare guys. stuff like that can still be for helmet only release signing riders.

otherwise nobody is going to go even if they do want to see the rest of dubai.

anyone else has any questions feel free to ask. by the way i love ellipses. SON!

your name makes me recall the ridiculously fucked up shit i saw when i went into amsterdamned on shrooms. very nice pub haha.

i have a friend who might be heading to dubai at the end of the year, i'll link him to this

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!

come on people the guy just made a decent thread on newschoolers asking how he can expand the sport that all of you love in an area where skiing is starting to grow.

"So comment and try to tel me how to promote skiing in a better way here too please!"

I dont remember him asking to turn thhis thread into a debate about oil, or who has the best indoor terrain park. the guy said ski dubai's park was arguably the best indoor park in the world, not that it totally owns every other park ever created by the hand of man.

fuck, cut this guy a little slack. he's just stoked on the sport like the rest of us, no reason to be putting him down.

You guys can be real assholes. Ski Dubai is cool, I'd ski there if I visited Dubai. As for the park, check out the photo's section of the site, there are sooooo many cool rails and features being destroyed in there. Maybe some park crew people can give some pointers too?

um i cant remember off the top of my head but something like 75-100 dollars for a two hour ticket. the thing that is mad funny about it is that the ticket automatically comes with a lesson, rental gear (which includes a jacket and pants and whatnot), everything you need because they assume you dont know how to ski nor have the equipment haha.

dubai is not cheap man...trust.

oh yeah and the lift is MADDDDDDDDDDDDD slow. like seriously you could probably hike the hill at the same speed.

my brothers going to dubai for a week today. i expect that he will go to this ski hall and hit me back, how its in reality

i mean, whether you like it or not, but bringing skiing (and also a little parkskiing) to other countries will help the industry and bring benefits to us all in the end.

Is he here for the world cup? If so ill be there watching or skiing but not entering if they allow us. And to the people asking about price i went yesterday and had a full day pass which is 300 dhs or 81 US dollars, But you get to go out and in freely and walk around the mall looking steezy with your ski boots and gear!

nope, he isnt riding park, but i think he will have a look at it, i asked him to make some photos and stuff. and i dont expect him to buy a ticket since 80 $ is kinda expensive. at our mountain, with over 200 km of slopes, you pay 30 or 40 depending on if you stay in town or not.

but here, within 1 hour there are 20 other possibilities to ski, which is not the case down there, so i guess its ok
