they have the technology for it but every car would have to be driverless.... and people would have to be comfortable with missing other cars by inches at times.
plus it would cost an insane amount of money to manufacture driverless cars and it would be incredibly difficult to replace all manual driven cars with auto-driven cars at the same time... because i don't think there will ever be driverless cars that can operate safely without some sort of communication with other cars.

Pretty sure driverless cars have already been developed and they're actually legal in Florida, Nevada, and California.
Just looked and here is what I found:
Google started testing its driverless cars in the beginning of 2012, and by May, Nevada was the first state to take the leap in letting them roam free on the roads. With these cars logging over 300,000 autonomous hours so far, the only two accidents involving them happened when they were being manually piloted.

this is awesome and seems like a great start but it looks like there will be a lot of issues with it. 1) when it's pulling out, seems like there will be a higher risk of an accident since it is more difficult for a the car to "see" another oncoming vehicle than a human
2) look slow as fuck, which would piss off other drivers but could be pretty funny
3) what happens when it gets in an accident with another car? the other person would have to wait for the owner to return so they could exchange info etc.

thats crazy. But I would hate to be stuck behind that fucking thing if I was trying to find a parking spot myself and not relying on technology. I'd like to see that car do that in traffic while others are looking for spots. It also did not signal for the space #breakthelaw.

it took longer to park that car than a woman, Imagine the traffic that would cause in a busy lot if it took that long.
Parking lots in my opinion are one of the most dangerous areas, carts out of control, kids jumping out of cars, people not looking when they back up having to pull super tight to the side to let people go around who cant back out/ pull in tight enough....
to many variables in my opinion for this to be going on. If every car had it it would be great but introducing the outside human element to this...ie in a mall parking lot where youre the only one with this feature-good luck getting your car back in one piece.

Plus, you wouldn't even have to worry about being pulled over, because I doubt your autopilot car is going to speed or drive recklessly. Win-win situation for sure.

I'm just thinking how can they set the sensors on these cars to make them not get too close to some things and not too far away from others? especially with rush hour traffic, parking and freeway situations. and there is no way these driverless cars will be flawless. there are going to be bugs at first that I'm willing to bet will cause a lot of trouble.

I'm gonna take a stab at a few of the questions just cause I am bored and love thinking about the potential of new technologies.
i wonder what happens when your car gets blocked in while you are away shopping (until 23:30? wtf?).
Same thing that happens now when your car gets blocked in, it sits there until it is unblocked.
Does this make it easier to steal a car?
I don’t see why, if anything all the camera’s/sensors would make getting away with it nearly impossible, plus all the GPS
What happens if you hit the car and no one Is in it? MY guess it probably already has pictures of your face/ license plate so look forward for that letter in the mail.
What if you did that in the middle of New York City? So many questions. park?

Economies of scale would drive down price exponentially, the technology has already been proven to work just fine sharing the roads with manual cars.

How would it get the ticket from the machine though? It'd get stuck at the first automatic parking garage it comes across, wouldn't be able to drive through a wooden bar, wouldn't be able to press the button to get the ticket, probably wouldn't be able to back out.
