Driverless Audi A7 Parks Itself & Then Picks You Up..

i wonder what happens when your car gets blocked in while you are away shopping (until 23:30? wtf?).

Does this make it easier to steal a car? What happens if you hit the car and no one Is in it? What if you did that in the middle of New York City? So many questions.

they have the technology for it but every car would have to be driverless.... and people would have to be comfortable with missing other cars by inches at times.

plus it would cost an insane amount of money to manufacture driverless cars and it would be incredibly difficult to replace all manual driven cars with auto-driven cars at the same time... because i don't think there will ever be driverless cars that can operate safely without some sort of communication with other cars.

Pretty sure driverless cars have already been developed and they're actually legal in Florida, Nevada, and California.

Just looked and here is what I found:

Google started testing its driverless cars in the beginning of 2012, and by May, Nevada was the first state to take the leap in letting them roam free on the roads. With these cars logging over 300,000 autonomous hours so far, the only two accidents involving them happened when they were being manually piloted.

this is awesome and seems like a great start but it looks like there will be a lot of issues with it. 1) when it's pulling out, seems like there will be a higher risk of an accident since it is more difficult for a the car to "see" another oncoming vehicle than a human

2) look slow as fuck, which would piss off other drivers but could be pretty funny

3) what happens when it gets in an accident with another car? the other person would have to wait for the owner to return so they could exchange info etc.

Just some thoughts

this.why do we need artificial intelligence in cars? the only practical use I can see is so that drivers can sleep on the highway which sounds extremely sketch

thats crazy. But I would hate to be stuck behind that fucking thing if I was trying to find a parking spot myself and not relying on technology. I'd like to see that car do that in traffic while others are looking for spots. It also did not signal for the space #breakthelaw.

it took longer to park that car than a woman, Imagine the traffic that would cause in a busy lot if it took that long.

Parking lots in my opinion are one of the most dangerous areas, carts out of control, kids jumping out of cars, people not looking when they back up having to pull super tight to the side to let people go around who cant back out/ pull in tight enough....

to many variables in my opinion for this to be going on. If every car had it it would be great but introducing the outside human element to this...ie in a mall parking lot where youre the only one with this feature-good luck getting your car back in one piece.

What about being able to get SHITFACED and not have to worry about a driver?? DDs will be a thing of the past, I can whip around in my new ass audi that does everything for me while blacked as fuck

Plus, you wouldn't even have to worry about being pulled over, because I doubt your autopilot car is going to speed or drive recklessly. Win-win situation for sure.

what happens when its a handicap spot? How pissed would you be as a handicap person if some car parks in your spot and noones even in it

If the cars driving by its self... im pretty fucking sure it will know if its a handicap spot.....

cause then all the internal software would be linked to one mainframe so that the cars knew where each other were via wirelessly broadcasted signals versus using motion sensors or whatever current driverless cars use....

This gives me such an engineering boner. I fucking love being able to see technology advance so quickly.

Fuck yea world.

I for one welcome our new automobile overlords.

But where do you buy this? I went to the Audi website and neither of the trimlines for the 2013 A7 appear to have this technology.

It's just a concept car it's probably going to be a really long time before that's actually available to the public.

Well, I say screw that. If they want me to buy their 80,000 car I want it to have this amazingly cool gimmick feature on it.

what happens if it runs out of gas while driver is sleeping or it is driving by itself? fucked

well no shit man.there is going to be a hell of a ton more human errors when people have driverless cars clearing them by inches unless they plan to make every car automated overnight.

why would driverless cars be so close to other cars, i don't understand why you would think that would happen

read caspaa's post, I assumed he had a valid source since he seemed to know what he's talking about.

I'm just thinking how can they set the sensors on these cars to make them not get too close to some things and not too far away from others? especially with rush hour traffic, parking and freeway situations. and there is no way these driverless cars will be flawless. there are going to be bugs at first that I'm willing to bet will cause a lot of trouble.

I'm gonna take a stab at a few of the questions just cause I am bored and love thinking about the potential of new technologies.

i wonder what happens when your car gets blocked in while you are away shopping (until 23:30? wtf?).

Same thing that happens now when your car gets blocked in, it sits there until it is unblocked.

Does this make it easier to steal a car?

I don’t see why, if anything all the camera’s/sensors would make getting away with it nearly impossible, plus all the GPS

What happens if you hit the car and no one Is in it? MY guess it probably already has pictures of your face/ license plate so look forward for that letter in the mail.

What if you did that in the middle of New York City? So many questions. park?

plus it would cost an insane amount of money to manufacture driverless cars and it would be incredibly difficult to replace all manual driven cars with auto-driven cars at the same time... because i don't think there will ever be driverless cars that can operate safely without some sort of communication with other cars.

Economies of scale would drive down price exponentially, the technology has already been proven to work just fine sharing the roads with manual cars.

1) when it's pulling out, seems like there will be a higher risk of an accident since it is more difficult for a the car to "see" another oncoming vehicle than a human

It will probably have 360 degree view at all time’s as apposed to the human average of 60 degrees without taking into account blind spots.

2) look slow as fuck, which would piss off other drivers but could be pretty funny

early technology, will improve exponentially.

what happens when its a handicap spot? How pissed would you be as a handicap person if some car parks in your spot and noones even in it

With all the tech built in I’m sure it would be able to identify handicap spots.

How would it get the ticket from the machine though? It'd get stuck at the first automatic parking garage it comes across, wouldn't be able to drive through a wooden bar, wouldn't be able to press the button to get the ticket, probably wouldn't be able to back out.

Valid point.

Haha seriously, I didn't even think about that. What happens when a deer jumps out at you in front of the road? Does it brake or does the computer say fuxwitit and plow right through it?

Same thing you’re brain does, rush through a list of variables and make a decision, only with the accuracy of a computer meaning probably far more reliable than your average driver.

what happens if it runs out of gas while driver is sleeping or it is driving by itself? fucked

Like they would make a car that just drives itself to empty, hell, it could probably find a full service station and fill up while you’re at your meeting eventually.

If major car manufactures got behind it I'm sure in no time it would be more efficient then driving manually, especially in NYC.

good luck finding it if you cell phone dies, or you can't get signal in a parking garage...

I don't see your point? What's the difference if it's a person or a computer driving when finding a spot?
