Few things piss me off more than seeing fifty white kids in the park decked out in their attemptive ghetto-ass-ness, making total retards of themselves. We all need to establish one crucial fact, SKIING IS NOT GHETTO. I have nothing against people who are from poor parts of town, people who are from poor parts of town who ski, or the FEW skiers who can rock the ghetto steez (Tanner, Mikael Deschenaux). I am angry at the kids who, despite their whiteness, despite their non-poorness, and despite the very background of the mountain culture, wear pants down to their knees while wrapping themselves up like the Taliban in do-rags. Skiing is an expensive sport, and therefore if you want to border on the preppy side, maybe throw on a Spyder race one piece or maybe a little Bogner number, that's fine by me (it's not my style, but you're being true to the roots of skiing). Also, Skiing's heros dont come from Compton, they come from Colorado, Utah, Canada, and Europe. Because of this, I am totally fine with a skier pulling into the parking lot blasting a little Iron Maiden, or some Rancid, some Rolling Stones, or any other non-rap music (that's gangsta rap, not hip-hop such as Swollen Members, because they have actual musical talent). The posessor of this steez can wear a trucker hat, some North Face gear, plenty of duct tape, etc. Another acceptable style is that of functionality. The most hardcore and innovative skiers know that the past as well as the future of skiing lies in the big mountain arena. A triple ply Gore Tex jacket is designed for skiing by people who ski, unlike the ghetto phabulous Fubu puffy jacket that makes you look like the michelin man. The ski pants worn by this skier aren't baggy because this skier doesn't need pants that hide shaky knees and sloppy style, because he has it already; and besides, it's hard to hike to the top of that cliff band when you can't separate your legs more than five inches. Above all, don't be a poser, leave the bling at home when you ski, wear your hat in a way that won't get you shot on the south-side, and be true to your sport. Skiing is unique among other sports because it has such a rich culture surrounding it. I am not saying that we should keep our heads up our asses as to the progression of skiing, but rather we should not hide the most progressive members of our sport under the disguise of snowboarders, who started this whole mess. Instead, root yourself in the part of our sport that is truly our own, the big mountain ripping; and the functionality based style that real skiers rock.

 
Kids buy stuff, therefore allowing the industry to exist. Let them buy what they want.

Dude! As I said before...What is up with the people bashing the rag and the baggy stuff or whatever they bahs on. I think there is other things in life other than skiing. what I mean is people are bringing their style into their skiing. For example, I was sagging my pants way before I ever thought about skiing. But now that I ski it was just a natural thing to have baggy pants and to bring my style into skiing. I'm not about to change my fuckin style just to ski and to fit in! Plus I hate stretchy pants. But anyway I guest my point is everybody got their own unique style (some dont) which they bring inot their skiing. And if you dont like it than that's just your problem. Just let it be like that.

Now about music. Its all about personnal taste. I hate punk and metal was in my early years. Now I.m just about more complex music like Drum and bass, electro, acid jazz and hip-hop. So what, do I have to listen to punk rock and early 80's music just cuz I ski...no. I aint gonna change my life style just to fit in cuz all the newschool skiers listen to early metal and shit like that. I'm way pass that time. Anyway.

maybe I didn't make it clear enough, but what I meant was that people shouldn't just look at someone like C.R. Johnson and automatically be ghetto because that is what someone else is doing. I think that as long as ghetto is legitimately your style, by all means ski that way. Just don't pose! also, Hip-Hop is some of my favorite music as well, but not Rap, because it is about something that I have no relation to. Also, loose pants are my style, but not rediculously huge pants. I agree that the skin tight Spyder race pants that Hans is sporting in the lodge are gay, and that progression in that sense is good (also, slightly baggy pants hold heat well, and can be better ventilated when you overheat while skinning up to the chutes).

Actually, most black people find it offensive that people try and imitate their style without the reason to do so, assosciating the originators of the style with people who don't do the style justice. Second of all, I am not trying to make people do anything differently, but rather I am telling them to do what is natural to them, and bring their own style to their skiing. The day skiers have homogenized themselves into one uniqueness-free blob of posers (whatever the posed style may be) like snowboarding has started to become, will be the day new school dies, because we will not have changed anything from the tired and conformist ski culture of the seventies that new school is trying to eliminate from skiing. Also, I say some skiers can rock the ghetto steez because the skiers who can rock it have lived in urban culture and rightfully live their lives with that style. I say Tanner can rock that style because he is rediculous and at the forefront of our sport, and although I do not agree with everything he does, I am in no position to look down upon him, due to his undeniable sickness (also, Tanner is getting more to the roots of skiing in his riding by focusing on the backcountry aspect of his skiing).

i agree with RS4life, why should black people be the only ones allowed to have that style. they did start it, but a lot of styles were started by specific groups of people and grew to be accepted by everyone. i dont see why that style has to be associated with the ghetto. it started there, but it doesnt have to stay there if other people like it.

Hey Jibtech, I am a skier, not a person who takes off and lands. I have tons of respect for the guys pushing the boundries of what is possible in the air on skis. I have no respect for the person who can do a corked 9, but can barely ski to the lodge. Big mountain is one of the few things in skiing that is completly ours, no surfing, skateboarding, or snowboarding influences here. Being a well rounded skier is the only way you can have good style, no matter what style you choose to have (as long as your not a poser, which is what i meant in this whole thread, nothing racist or hateful was implied, if it seemed that way in the original message I did not mean it to)

 
Look man, Im black I dont give a fuck what you wear or how you wear it. Hiphop is pretty diverse, its for everybody ya its from the streets thats its essence but its dope that people can feel the music from different backgrounds. The whole ghetto thing is funny not evey black person is ghetto, I'm not rich but I cant say im poor because I ski, which is a expensive sport. I actually enjoy how Tanner fucks with peoples heads because hes influenced by hip-hop culture and it seems that alot of people find it negative. But since hes dope you can't really say shit about him or cr, or raps. There pushing the sport, and influencing alot of kids. But bacially who gives a fuck, just ski maybe they will bring some diversity to the sport.

Well, now that i've taken a deep breath and counted to 10... I was really pissed off a this kid I met in a ski shop this morning who was making complete jackass of himself because he was posing a style (that happened to be baggy pants and a do-rag, but it really could have been any style) and reflecting his douchebaggery on the whole new school movement. Still pretty pissed off, I wrote the first thread without really reading it over, and it came off completely differently than I wanted it to be. I am really trying to speak out against any kind of posing, of any style. I think we can all agree that if every skier wasn't true to their own style, skiing would never be the contsantly progressing sport that it is. Ski racing has been calculated and figured down to an exact formula for all to follow, and partially because of this most racers burn out in high school to persue the progressive and personal-style oriented world of freestyle. I hate to come off as a jackass, but I did, and this message is correcting my previous jackass-ness.

 


Couple of Things:

1. If you consider Swollen Members good hip hop, youre just stupid and that nullifies anything else you have to say hereinafter.

2. I agreed with you up until the part about 'technical outerwear.' That whole rant was just dumb.

Three points on why this issue should be dropped as soon as possible...This dman thing has been feuded to long...The thing is people will dress the way they like...i like the ghetto steeze clothing...mabey not the style that is forseen with it(gurrilla) Im all for your own style, but if at ever trick you pull with your style and people say it looks like shit it will make you want to imitate a 'cool' style ...its people that will yell that shit at people riding that make people want to be gurrilla and cool. Also when the hell has skings roots been related to racing? Its started out with a bunchoff the worlds first freeriders breaking the ancles in god aweful equpiment....they did it because they loved it. Also the only reason racers where those 'suits' is because they use it to go faster...I dont think they would ride the mountain with a suit like that. anyways ive said way too much, i dont even type this much for english class....all in all drop all these gay subjects and just enjoy skiing
