Does anyone on here work for Vail Resorts?

I don’t agree with the way they talent scout either but on more than one occasion I’ve heard it mentioned that the company doesn’t want to put people into positions. They want people to apply for the positions. It’s like that at every level. If a senior/manager/lead whatever spot opens up they aren’t gonna promote one person into it they’re gonna leave it open and see who wants it.

Yeah I've been told that too over the years and I've always looked at that as a lazy and passive aggressive type of behavior.

I looked at available jobs every once in a while but nothing ever seemed to check all my boxes for committing to a move. Jobs just always seemed to get filled by the time you hear about them in passing.

Would also be nice if the tech they rely on actually worked.

Before I left BC I was looking at a transfer to Afton Alps because I knew I was moving to the area and I had to browse the job board from my phone or my personal laptop because half a dozen posts weren't appearing internally. Literally the exact opposite of what it was supposed to be doing. I put a ticket in with help desk to let them know and they were just like "I dunno, ticket closed"

Even though it's supposed to be against policy I know for a fact that they've filled positions internally without posting them. I also know for a fact that they don't give interviews for jobs posted internally if they already have the person selected.

But I guess that type of shit is going to happen anywhere.

Honestly, I'd love to work for the company again solely because they have the most resources at their disposal right now. It would be so easy to make some seriously positive changes at one of these tiny mountains they've bought. I was just tired of treading water at BC and in that valley more than anything else.

You guys should all just have a pillow fight...

Lets get back on topic about how Vail sucks. That’s why we are all here!

Not diving right back in just holding steady on my stance. I already said I’m not gonna sugar coat anything. My delivery might be a bit rough but life’s rough.

If you really got boned with the lunches then calling out the person who fucked up isn't actually doing something about it. Checkout what’s happening at beaver creek and that’s doing something about it.

I have good days and bad days at work just like anyone else. I have days where I curse the company and days where I think I’m in it for the long haul. Working at a ski resort is a privilege in its own right and I fully recognize that. There are really some shitty jobs out there and working at a ski resort is not one of them.

I’ve worked with a lot of brilliant people in my time here and I’ve also worked with a lot of burnt out jaded people. It’s not like I’ve never struggled. I fully understand the struggle but I don’t need to cry about getting boned because at the end of the day I chose this industry and I understand the trade off that I get over working a real job. I know plenty of people that understand and accept the industry for what it is and plenty of people that live in denial. I don’t always agree with the way things are but I know my status and I choose my battles wisely.

There is always room for the industry to improve and the need to improve employee conditions but this is and industry that has and always will rely on cheap seasonal labor for 50% of the year. The sooner you understand that the better. I want another dollar or two an hour and so does everyone else but that’s not how businesses work. I know people that work 50+ hour weeks here and then work a morning or evening job to get what they want. That’s fucking life.

If you arent gonna pay resort employees 15$ an hour to start, you need to at least make the pay increase up to 15 $ an hour happen very quickly.

The idea smarty pants ming put forward that the business model simply wont work paying 15$ an hour to employees is pure bullshit. If the min wage gets bumped to 15$ the ski industry will get along just fine

so yeah, I'm new here, but I've been skiing for a while, and currently work for Vail.

I was gonna type out a great report about how I hate Vail and am looking to quit in the near future. Then I started reading this thread and yeah... damn this website has some spicy forums

I'm a vail ski inatructor.

Aplarently they were accidently paying me the cert 2 wage of 16.25 all last season. I am cert 1. This season 3 week into the season, I was told that the correction will be made, I got a 20% pay deduction, there was no grace period. I make less than $1000 a month, my rent is $370 and i hae to borrow money from my parents to live. If it weren't for them I would be financially trapped here. Also, most of our benefits are gone this season. People are saying this is Rob Katz last season buts thats too good to be true. And "ski town mcdonalds" is becoming a common phrase among instructors.

Great place to live 10/10 would be a 6 foot, 140 pound instructor again. Great weight loss program i lost 15 pounds in a month.

“Well if you just WoRkEd HaRdEr you’d be making more money.”

Fuck that dude. Sounds like ass. Meanwhile, lessons and private guiding is literally the number one revenue driver for a ski resort. Talented certified instructors are critical to their operations. I’m sorry but that’s just pure greed.

Taught skiing for Boyne at Big Sky last year. Seems they actually do care about their people and recognize how important the instructors are for the operation. Difference between Boyne and Vail? Vail has public shareholders. Hmmmmm..

Don't you think it's a bit unreasonable to live in vail and only work a part time job?

Sometimes it's a little bland, sometimes somebody dumps the whole bottle of hit sauce into a thread.

Quality times.

So who again is supposed to pour your coffee and bump your lifts if low paid people shouldn’t feel entitled to live near their jobs?

I mean Rob Katz can helicopter them in from Denver I guess.

You should appreciate people who have the support system to reside in these places and chose to work for a few bucks at the resorts not degrade them and call them entitled Evan. Aren’t you the only person that posts regularly thats makes $ off this website?

Thanks for twisting my words dude, this kid clearly works 20 hours a week, you can't expect to live ANYWHERE working part time.

That being said, affordable housing is a huge problem in all ski towns, I live in a ski town, I've seen tons of people get kicked out of rentals so people can rent it out nightly, everyone I know that owns a house moves to SLC or heber valley to get something affordable.

Ski towns aren't affordable, I agree with you and others that Vail needs to do a better job at providing housing and a livable wage. But everyone who does these jobs chooses to do them, nobody is forcing people to move to ski towns and live in debt. This is going to turn into a huge issue soon, covid has accelerated it, but resorts will have a tough time hiring low paying positions without increasing their pay. This will be reflected in food prices, parking, day tickets and passes... and guess what? Everyone will complain about these price increases, but hopefully these workers can make more money in the future.

Now that being said get off my fucking back, I've been a lifty, I've been a dishwasher, I've been a valet driver, I've done tons of shit jobs in my life, and when I did work for NS it was for pennies dude. I left the industry because I could make more money, I don't work for NS anymore and I am out of the ski industry.

People like the dude in this thread who's parents are bank rolling him? People who came correct, people who have a remote work job, people who are willing to live dirt poor, people who can only make it work for a season...? Basically anyone who wants to work and live in a ski town... that's kinda how it goes in reality

Yeah. And there will be conflixting situations everywhere when it comes to making it work by the slopes.

Milfhunter told me of the green names in this thread bought themselves a South American sex trafficked slave for example but they won’t cop to that on the forum.

Thruth^^^

Thing is i make myself available 40 hours a week.

And its all "temporary" with covid. But we cant act like this pandemic is a one off thing. The best scientists all over the world are saying frequent pandemics as or more severe than covid are likely this century.

We have to bet it will be temporary but odds are there will be one every few years. We are almost free of covid but the root cause is still in affect. And thats the last straw that got me to complain. We may have to live in this scenario every few years for the rest of our lives. And the thought of being left behind because its constantly "temporary" scares me.

Here are some interesting links that lead me to this conclusion. We cant predict the future with history this time, because 8 billion is a very unique number.
https://www.politico.eu/article/virus-hunter-peter-piot-age-of-pandemics/

This book does nothing but hint at the fact that the root causes of covid were things like population density and culture(two things that are very hard to change without excessive struggle)

Itt: ski bums afraid to sell drugs on the side too support their ski bum habit with shitty ski resort pay.

but seriously, resorts should pay their employees better.

well they should. However vail investors want their money so higher wages are just gonna up the prices for a day ticket/epic pass.

Its rare that a company going public means good news for the consumers, so support your local hills if you can.
