Do you wear a helmet?

You can kiss your career as an actuary goodbye.

It is not just about fatalities, in fact that is probably not what the helmets are really designed to prevent. They are more designed to prevent serious injuries.

If you think helmets don't make you safer, you are an idiot of epic proportions.

Do you think that an insurance company -- read, an organization that actually knows how to evaluate data -- would be impressed with your argument? I can promise you they would not.

As someone who has a Masters in statistics it drives me nuts to here idiotic arguments like this. You clearly have no background in data analysis. You should probably shut your mouth, as you will only make yourself seem like more of an idiot if you keep talking.

Since most backcountry deaths occur among people who have avalanche training does that mean avalanche training is a bad idea?

When you come to conclusions that no one who has a serious statistical background would come to don't expect people to listen to you.

Statistics don't lie, because they don't SAY anything. It is inferences attached to statistics that lie. Your implied inferences are pretty absurd.

If a colleague of mine came up with the sort of inferences you did he would never again be given the chance to do any data analysis

You do realize that this doesn't actually do much for your argument. It is a bit like lab coat syndrome, the way to deal with it is to take your own blood pressure regularly, so that it becomes a very normal activity. Wearing a helmet all the time does the same thing.

If people always wear helmets, they become an unconscious part of skiing.

People who wear helmets are MORE aware of their own vulnerability, but they also tend to be better and more serious skiers.which means they are taking bigger risks. They are safer wearing a helmet

If you are skiing an exposed 45 degree line and a ski pops off, you might well hit your head on a rock. I would prefer having a helmet on my head.

While helmets might not always save you, they definitely help.

Also, if you ski differently wearing a helmet that is YOUR behavior which increases the risk, not the helmet.

When I read arguments like yours it makes me wish that people without math/stat backgrounds would just not even bother trying to interpret data. They always seem to come up with silly self-serving conclusions.

In my opinion, looking "cool" definitely isn't worth possible brain damage. Helmets can be really cool anyways so I dont see what the appeal of not wearing one is.

no, they don't fit my head right and it's really annoying.. and i don't really need one since i'm always filming so

Yeah, it's just not worth dying or living the rest of your life as a vegetable not to wear a helmet. Plus, I think helmets look cooler than hats while skiing.

Yes, they protect your head and I think it actually looks better than not wearing one. In some parks it is also mandatory to wear one so why not wear one?

I like to wear it because it keeps my ears warm, and I feel "naked" without it.

And even if it weren't for those reasons, I would still wear it.

Yes, gotta love the brain bucket (smith maze) haha its saved me from falls to tree branch hits on powder days.
