Do you wear a helmet?

I finally broke down and wore a helmet for the first time this summer out at Mt.Hood. I was surprised how comfortable it was and easy to get used to! Plus now I have somewhere to put all my stickers!! Remember, I'm "Old School" and we didn't grow up wearing helmets, thus the delay.

wear mine maybe 25% of the time I ski, deff saves myself from yard sales instead of my shit flying errr where

My older brother got into a very bad ski crash when another skier that was behind him looked the other way and bashed him into the woods. ( i witnessed it happen ) He was going fast when he hit a tree. He had a severe concussion and broke his pelvis. If he had not been wearing a helmet the doctors had told us that he would for sure be dead. I always wear a helmet and it is very stupid not to wear one.

i do in the main season, but in backyard pvc setups i usually don't. Too hot. plus, there's not really space to do much gnarly stuff

Sometimes I find mine to be bothersome, or I'd rather wear other headwear other than the stuff I have to wear under my helmet to get it to fit. Eyewear, hood, layering, shit like that all play into helmet wearing decisions.

Granted, I wear mine 90 percent of the time.

It's mandatory at my hill to wear a helmet in the park, so yes. I would wear one anyways though no reason not to.

i do for comps because u have to also during urban and when im trying to learn something new but other than that i usally dont it might be like 30 percent of the time i would wear it

To jump in on this little debate, you might not know if he could have died or not, but one thing is for sure he walked away unscathed, which in my eyes is a hell of a lot better than what might have happened even if he only gained a cut and a concussion. Why put up with the injury when you can get up the next day perfectly fine and go back at it again? Oh yeah, I forgot, it was because you hate corporate america lol. Yes if you didn't catch on the greed argument is total bullshit and why I am only taking everything you say with a grain of salt. If you want you can go ahead and read these:

http://www.canadianmedicaljournal.ca/content/182/4/333.full

http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/44/11/781.full

Why take the chance? I mean yes you might look "cool" in the eyes of a few but you won't be that cool if something bad happens and you end up regretting that for the rest of your life. I know people who have stopped skiing because of head injuries and I would rather not have to stop skiing at any point in my life.

So yes, I always wear a helmet, if it's hot out I will just switch to a cooler helmet.

pretty much all the time unless im seshing my backyard rails or just having a mellow day in the park not trying any new tricks or anything

The articles you linked do not at all contradict with the information at ski-injury.com so I'm not sure you why you felt the need to link. The findings are the same, a 35% reduction in low grade head injuries. The only difference I could find was that that particular article loved to throw around the phrase "significant reduction."

Ski-injury.com also explains that children gain the most benefit of helmet use due to their soft non fully formed skulls. I'm sure that helmet probably did save that little girls life, but considering new schooler's is probably not full of 6 year old girls, I didn't think that piece of information was particularly relevant. If you want all the details though I stand by my original statement of encouraging everyone to go read for themselves.

No one seems to want to tackle the real elephant in the room which is the 15mph or less impact rating of ski helmets. I understand it's much easier to strawman on the other tidbits out there, but if people take away anything from this discussion I think it should be that.

Furthermore I would really appreciate if people would stop assuming that I have some sort of anti helmet agenda. My only agenda here is to educate. The efficacy of helmets has been seriously over-inflated.

If you really, really want my own personal reason for not wearing a helmet it's convenience, there is nothing especially stylish about wearing a beanie either, but it sure folds up and fits in a pocket quite nicely.

A helmet has saved my life. Took a tree to the head, lost feeling in my legs when I fractured T4&T5 in my spine [downhill biking]. I specifically wear a POC for skiing because it's rated higher than that 12mph bullshit.

Yes, crashed mountain biking this summer and broke my collarbone and snapped my helmet. Would have gotten severely fucked up if I wasn't wearing one. Didn't even have a headache. Same goes for skiing. It protects your noggin...

I deem this extremely approrpriate

You hippies with your conspiracy theories and corprate greed speels. Of course there's a markup built into the price of a helmet when you buy it, that's how capitalism works

Your first sentence is the dumbest thing i've ever read in my life. This would be impossible for them to prove since there's no control variable in this study. You can't prove someone who was wearing a helmet and crashed would have died, or vise versa

You know how I know helmets work, because when I fall and smash my head on the groud, I can keep skiing. When some idiot not wearing a helmet does the same thing, they get a concussion and go to the hospital. Argining against the use of helmets in terms of protection is stupid

But I don't see one citation on ski-injury.com. I posted what are called "scientific journals", that doesn't make them all completely true but they are more legitimate sources. You also seem to feel that after 15mph the 100% safety rating instantly drops to 0%, which it doesn't, anyone with common sense knows that it would arc off. The SCIENTIFIC article also throws around that phrase because it is SCIENTIFICALLY proven/ correct to say that.

In terms of helping children more, I believe it BUT in that scenario (as you have to look at this on a case by case basis and not statistically) a face first impact would have the same outcome as an adult since the front of the skull would have been fully fused by her age.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS only time I dont is only for a run after like a rail jam when I'm real hot. I never hit any features or anything without one on.

if im just spinning laps i dont usually but if i want to work on a trick or am in a comp other than rail jams i have one on

ive always worn a helmet because my parents made me when i learned to ski. now if i dont wear one, i feel vulnerable.

story time, this past season my friend fell on a down flat down box and hit the back of his head pretty hard. but when he hit, it pushed the helmet up and he split his neck open. just a few stitches, nothin terrible, but it makes me wonder how much helmets actually help. doesnt really matter though because ill always wear one, just in case

I do wear a helmet, when I'm doing something unsafe I like to be as safe as possible...Be it free-fall, skiing, rock climbing...going to a war zone lol, you know. The normal stuff. I don't see a con behind it, and god forbid you run into that 'one time' thing where you really needed it. That would just be unfortuante to leave your family with that much debt because of your stupidity ;)

Hey Cyanbitch, I have quite for you: "Give me convienience or give me death" - Jello Biafra. Why is it that with every helmet thread some stubborn turdnut argues against them in a childish fashion? Oh yeah, because this is the Internet! I don't really care if you personally choose not to wear one but I get kinda pissed when people try to convince others that it's not safer to wear a helmet.

Always. I split my last helmet in half a few winters back when I was on my snowboard one day in the mini park. In there with a couple buddies just messin around, went to spin off a relatively good sized jump (considering it was a mini park) and caught my edge when i came around and slapped my head hard on the icy landing..

So much so that even though I had a helmet on, I was concussed and puking violently for the next 3 days

That Is bullshit. zero reduction in fatalities? Helmets do protect you, don't say they don't because I have seen people fall down rocky outcroppings and hit get massive gashes on their helmet witch would have probably been fatal if they weren't wearing it. I my self have hit my head hard multiple times and walked way with no injury. It would have definitely been different if I weren't wearing one. You are better of hitting your head with a helmet on than nothing at all. You have a barrier of styrofoam to break before you break your skull. Even if you crash at over the specified impact protection you are better off than not having one on at all.

to people saying that it's too hot, wear your skate helmet if you want to wear a helmet in the heat...
