Do You Think Drugs Have Influenced Many Musicians?

I'm doing a paper about his topic. What are your views on drugs and music? Do you think they influenced musicians like Hendrix, Zeppelin, Beatles, ect.? I'm in defense that drugs have influenced many musicians. My roommate plays guitar and he says he comes up with his best stuff when he is high. When he is sober, he finds himself playing basic chords. When he is high, he says that his mind just seems to be a lot more open and becasue of that, he is able to write better music.

defffff
drugs like lsd and weed can make playing music an adventure
I think its because your brain is on a basic level to a point where everything you comprehend kinda slows down but at the same time its super indepth....
so like playing a guitar could be just like putting a puzzle together with notes that flow with eatchother just the right way, or you could just be hella high and think your good

yeah drugs definitly had an affect on music....im not positive but i think i heard something on npr about the beatles recording an album on acid.

drugs make musicians write amazing music...for example check out the beatles before drugs and after drugs. beatles sucked a fat one when all they sang were love songs but after they made trippy ass shit they were fucking amazing.

i'm having some trouble finding some solid sources that support my argument. so far i only have so youtube vids...and anyone comes across a good website, post the link

"Do You Think Drugs Have Influenced Many Musicians?"

uhhh dude you gotta be kidding me

dose poo come out your asshole?

drugs have been influencing musicians for as long as long as there has been music and drugs.

The Beatles and Dylan, Hendrix, Townshend even though he swore them off later, Eric Clapton def, Jazz musicians famously did heroin and weed,

You can talk about the repercussions of the infamous meeting between Bob Dylan and the Beatles where he introduced them to weed. Afterwards, Beatles did Rubber Soul on to Revolver, and Dylan put out Highway 6one Revisited and Blonde on Blonde.

there is a documentary called the decline of western civilization... talks about drugs and music. Its a 3 parter. You can probably get it off netflix. But it is a legit documentary and you would have no problem using it as a source for class.

From a review of the second one, "The only depressing footage is an interview with Chris Holmes of WASP. He's drunk out of his mind and makes it quite clear that he hates life, is an alcoholic, had a heavily dysfunctional childhood and will be dead soon. Very scary to watch and sad. "

You should definitely watch it.

haha damnit you beat me to it!!!

I'm going to have to say yes. Friend of mine did his seinor thesis on "Music and the influence of LSD"..... it was incredible, and academically speaking was actually pretty legit.

I believe psychedelic drugs are the channel in which sentient beings can truly discover their full mental capacity with respect to prior life influences and exposures.

It breaks down any subconscious barriers or distractions, thus allowing intense onset of connection with nature and one's self-being.

just look at the progression of the beatles' albums you can tell when they started doing acid, and then as they did more and more of it their shit just got crazier, im pretty sure almost every musician in the 20th century has been influenced by drugs, at least to some extent because if they somehow werent doing drugs then they would definitely have a different viewpoint than the 95% of musicians that were doing drugs

Not Townshend, he hated acid. The Who were the "Worst Psychedelic Band in the World." I think he only did it twice.

You can also talk about how they have influenced musicians in a negative way. Death for example, well even as inspiration for songs. When Danny Whitten of Crazy Horse ODd on heroin, Neil Young wrote Needle and the Damage Done, so theres a song that without drugs would never have been written.

i cant tell if its e sarcasm or not cause alot of people think that he was a junkie and died from a heroin overdose, which is false, he didnt shoot heroin at all, he smoked grass drank etc, but no needles. he took pills that were mislabeled or something like that and choked on his own throw up.......as far as how drugs affect music,,,,,,,that is a very complex question, cause think, honestly, do you think louis armstrong (who said he smoked marijuana evryday of his life) played the trumpet the way he did because he smoked weed? or miles davis, was he so on point and smooth because of the drugs he took& bradley nowell, did his genius come from shooting up smack........im not saying it dosent have an influence or an effect, what effect it has is very complicated and has alot of grey area. the music has all to do with musician and his surroundings, i think is a safe statement.

read 'scar tissue' by anthony kedis

it talks about how drugs influenced him and the rest of the chilis to write songs

hmmmm, obviously you haven't seen the jimi hendrix movie...he even talks about shooting acid and stuff. you must be thinking bob marley. oh and nobody knows how hendrix died, but all of his close friends think he OD'd on something on purpose.

without drugs the beatles never would have made it out of british alleyway clubs...ok not true, but there would be no white album, no sgt peppers....

Anybody in any facet of the creative arts has the potential to benefit from drugs--sometimes at the expense of their bodies and careers, but something good usually comes out of it nevertheless. If you want to break away from music check out the Hubert Selby Jr documentary called It'll Be Better Tomorrow. That guy started out on the streets of Brooklyn doing heroin and became one of America's greatest authors because he was able to write about it brilliantly. Granted he wasn't really on anything while he wrote, but the fact that he had the experience was the basis for every story he created.

He wrote TOMMY based on his experiences with STP. Everyone in The Who DID drugs, they just didn't LIKE them.

Even if he swore them off later, he admits that many of his songs were influenced by, or by the absence of, or the estrangement from, drugs and its community.

Sorry for the double post buuuuuttttt,,

Hendrix died from asphyxiation due to a mixture of red wine and barbiturates - sleeping pills. There is debate about his time of death, paramedics flipped him over, he was dead before hand, he made it to the hospital blablablabla. I love Him to death and I won't mock his death by attempting to spread conspiracies, but here's the deal: He choked and died. Paramedics can be blamed, Monika Danneman can be blamed, but in the end, the guy is done. In some ways its a good thing. Afterall, his legend of meteoric excess and skill suddenly cut short with no explanation cemented him as legendary status in our culture. I don't think he would be as famous if he survived to fade away....

By the end of Electric Ladyland, he was dropping LSD everyday with Michael Jeffreys - his lying cheating and swindling manager according to Chas Chandler. According to autopsy reports, there were no needle scars on his arms, and he was deathly afraid of needles according to his dad. As Mitch Mitchell describes the excesses in Electric Gypsy. He was just getting everything together for First Rays and he was sober, and happy, and it sucks that he died.

^i agree, jimi is rad, thats more or less what i said, im not one for conspiracy either but ive read and heard that he took pills that he thought were sleeping pills but instead were something alot heavier.......and to k-rob, shooting acid is gnarly beyond beleif, i dont think people shoot acid, i could be wrong......and to reiterate, good music isnt becuase of the drugs its thanks to the musician......

There is no doubt in my mind that drugs have encouraged musicians over the years to explore the most inner reaches of their minds, allowing some great music to be made. That being said, the music that they write isn't because of the drugs, it's already there. My best friend has never touched any substance in his life and he writes some of the most incredible, crazy music I've ever heard.

haha about the "shooting acid" thing i have no idea what i was thinking...he did do some pretty hardcore stuff though, just buy the movie and you'll see.

The only music i would say was not influenced by drugs is country, thats why its such a shitty music. Most Music you listen to that is Worth listening to had some drug influence, why do you think your favorite music always sounds 10 times better when your high??

were/ are

Bob Marly, Beatles, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Old RHCP, Nirvana, sublime, ect

not

Ritchie valens, new RHCP, Minor threat, fugazi, misfits

Skoal gets you fucked up!

Haha, I don't think country can legitimately be lumped into the "music" category. It's just the redneck's primitive way to communicate their three feelings: I lost my ex-girlfriend (waaaahhhh!), my truuuuhhhhhck is badass, and I love you in a very creepy, unorthodox manner.
