I'm doing a paper about his topic. What are your views on drugs and music? Do you think they influenced musicians like Hendrix, Zeppelin, Beatles, ect.? I'm in defense that drugs have influenced many musicians. My roommate plays guitar and he says he comes up with his best stuff when he is high. When he is sober, he finds himself playing basic chords. When he is high, he says that his mind just seems to be a lot more open and becasue of that, he is able to write better music.

I think its because your brain is on a basic level to a point where everything you comprehend kinda slows down but at the same time its super indepth....
so like playing a guitar could be just like putting a puzzle together with notes that flow with eatchother just the right way, or you could just be hella high and think your good

just look at the progression of the beatles' albums you can tell when they started doing acid, and then as they did more and more of it their shit just got crazier, im pretty sure almost every musician in the 20th century has been influenced by drugs, at least to some extent because if they somehow werent doing drugs then they would definitely have a different viewpoint than the 95% of musicians that were doing drugs

Not Townshend, he hated acid. The Who were the "Worst Psychedelic Band in the World." I think he only did it twice.
You can also talk about how they have influenced musicians in a negative way. Death for example, well even as inspiration for songs. When Danny Whitten of Crazy Horse ODd on heroin, Neil Young wrote Needle and the Damage Done, so theres a song that without drugs would never have been written.

i cant tell if its e sarcasm or not cause alot of people think that he was a junkie and died from a heroin overdose, which is false, he didnt shoot heroin at all, he smoked grass drank etc, but no needles. he took pills that were mislabeled or something like that and choked on his own throw up.......as far as how drugs affect music,,,,,,,that is a very complex question, cause think, honestly, do you think louis armstrong (who said he smoked marijuana evryday of his life) played the trumpet the way he did because he smoked weed? or miles davis, was he so on point and smooth because of the drugs he took& bradley nowell, did his genius come from shooting up smack........im not saying it dosent have an influence or an effect, what effect it has is very complicated and has alot of grey area. the music has all to do with musician and his surroundings, i think is a safe statement.

Anybody in any facet of the creative arts has the potential to benefit from drugs--sometimes at the expense of their bodies and careers, but something good usually comes out of it nevertheless. If you want to break away from music check out the Hubert Selby Jr documentary called It'll Be Better Tomorrow. That guy started out on the streets of Brooklyn doing heroin and became one of America's greatest authors because he was able to write about it brilliantly. Granted he wasn't really on anything while he wrote, but the fact that he had the experience was the basis for every story he created.

Hendrix died from asphyxiation due to a mixture of red wine and barbiturates - sleeping pills. There is debate about his time of death, paramedics flipped him over, he was dead before hand, he made it to the hospital blablablabla. I love Him to death and I won't mock his death by attempting to spread conspiracies, but here's the deal: He choked and died. Paramedics can be blamed, Monika Danneman can be blamed, but in the end, the guy is done. In some ways its a good thing. Afterall, his legend of meteoric excess and skill suddenly cut short with no explanation cemented him as legendary status in our culture. I don't think he would be as famous if he survived to fade away....
By the end of Electric Ladyland, he was dropping LSD everyday with Michael Jeffreys - his lying cheating and swindling manager according to Chas Chandler. According to autopsy reports, there were no needle scars on his arms, and he was deathly afraid of needles according to his dad. As Mitch Mitchell describes the excesses in Electric Gypsy. He was just getting everything together for First Rays and he was sober, and happy, and it sucks that he died.

^i agree, jimi is rad, thats more or less what i said, im not one for conspiracy either but ive read and heard that he took pills that he thought were sleeping pills but instead were something alot heavier.......and to k-rob, shooting acid is gnarly beyond beleif, i dont think people shoot acid, i could be wrong......and to reiterate, good music isnt becuase of the drugs its thanks to the musician......

There is no doubt in my mind that drugs have encouraged musicians over the years to explore the most inner reaches of their minds, allowing some great music to be made. That being said, the music that they write isn't because of the drugs, it's already there. My best friend has never touched any substance in his life and he writes some of the most incredible, crazy music I've ever heard.
