Do you love volunteering and doing community service?

I don't want to sound completely irrational and call Obama or any leader for that matter a devout socialist, but here are some quotes from Nikita Khrushschev I found in my MSS book which I think are definitely words that should guide and warn any world leader. It just shows how a radical point of view can be dangerous, and any actions on a high level of influence should be taken cautiously. I don't think our country is capable of raising actions to this level, but we should remind ourselves what can happen if we don't check and balance one another.

"Do you think when two representatives holding diametrically opposing views get together and shake hands, the contradictions between our systems will simply melt away? What kind of a daydream is that?"

"I once said, "We will bury you," and I got into trouble with it. Of course we will not bury you with a shovel. Your own working class will bury you."

"Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river."

"The press is our chief ideological weapon."

I believe he also had one about introduce small amounts of socialism until the government was finally communist, because he did not believe the people would allow communism. Not sure where that one is though, but these are interesting.

so what you're saying is that people shouldn't have an education because that will make them want to be a high-class worker instead of a low-class worker, and that most low-class workers of today are people with no education? dude, you need to get off the computer and go for a walk, i don't think you understand the world.

Ya I understand where you are coming from. I don't really agree, but at least you were cool enough to expain your thoughts rather than saying something retarded and mean like a lot of people. Thanks bro

I would have to agree that if this is truly Obama's plan it will effectively ruin his plans to cut unemployment rates and boost the economy. That would be if everyone was mandated to volunteer anyway.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden's Plan for Universal Voluntary Public Service

The Problem

Americans Not Asked to Serve After 9/11: President Bush squandered an opportunity to mobilize the American people following 9/11 when he asked Americans only to go shopping.

Insufficient Federal Support for Service: While more than 500,000 people have served in AmeriCorps, the program turns away tens of thousands of applicants a year because of limited funding.

Need for More R&D in Nonprofit Sector: Research and development in the nonprofit sector is limited and there is a disconnect between charitable foundations that can fund innovation and the organizations on the ground that can test new concepts and bring them to scale.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden's Plan

Enable All Americans to Serve to Meet the Nation's Challenges

  • Expand Corporation for National and Community Service: Obama and Biden will expand AmeriCorps from 75,000 slots today to 250,000 and they will focus this expansion on addressing the great challenges facing the nation. They will establish a Classroom Corps to help teachers and students, with a priority placed on underserved schools; a Health Corps to improve public health outreach; a Clean Energy Corps to conduct weatherization and renewable energy projects; a Veterans Corps to assist veterans at hospitals, nursing homes and homeless shelters; and a Homeland Security Corps to help communities plan, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
  • Engage Retiring Americans in Service on a Large Scale: Older Americans have a wide range of skills and knowledge to contribute. Obama and Biden will expand and improve programs that connect individuals over the age of 55 to quality volunteer opportunities.
  • Expand the Peace Corps: Obama and Biden will double the Peace Corps to 16,000 by 2011. They will work with the leaders of other countries to build an international network of overseas volunteers so that Americans work side-by-side with volunteers from other countries.
  • Show the World the Best Face of America: Obama and Biden will set up an America's Voice Initiative to send Americans who are fluent speakers of local languages to expand our public diplomacy. They also will extend opportunities for older individuals such as teachers, engineers, and doctors to serve overseas.

Integrate Service into Learning

  • Expand Service-Learning in Our Nation's Schools: Obama and Biden will set a goal that all middle and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year. They will develop national guidelines for service- learning and will give schools better tools both to develop programs and to document student experience. Green Job Corps: Obama and Biden will create an energy-focused youth jobs program to provide disadvantaged youth with service opportunities weatherizing buildings and getting practical experience in fast-growing career fields.
  • Expand YouthBuild Program: Obama and Biden will expand the YouthBuild program, which gives disadvantaged young people the chance to complete their high school education, learn valuable skills and build affordable housing in their communities. They will grow the program so that 50,000 low-income young people a year a chance to learn construction job skills and complete high school.
  • Require 100 Hours of Service in College: Obama and Biden will establish a new American Opportunity Tax Credit that is worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year.
  • Promote College Serve-Study: Obama and Biden will ensure that at least 25 percent of College Work-Study funds are used to support public service opportunities instead of jobs in dining halls and libraries.

Invest in the Nonprofit Sector

  • Social Investment Fund Network: Obama and Biden will create a Social Investment Fund Network to use federal seed money to leverage private sector funding to improve local innovation, test the impact of new ideas and expand successful programs to scale.
  • Social Entrepreneurship Agency for Nonprofits: Barack Obama and Joe Biden will a create an agency within the Corporation for National and Community Service dedicated to building the capacity and effectiveness of the nonprofit sector.

Barack Obama's Record

A Lifetime of Service

Obama began his career by moving to the South Side of Chicago to direct the Developing Communities Project. Together with a coalition of ministers, Obama set out to improve living conditions in poor neigh- borhoods plagued by crime and high unemployment. After graduating from law school, Obama passed up lucrative law firm jobs to head Project Vote, which helped register 150,000 new African American voters in Chicago, the highest number ever registered in a single local effort. Michelle Obama was founding executive director of Public Allies Chicago, a leadership development program that identifies and prepares talented young adults for careers serving the public good.

last time you checked, how many fast food workers or garbage guys or regular construction/state workers have college educations? How about bus drivers, cleaning people, berry pickers, and mechanics. Not many, certainly not as many as business owners, doctors, lawyers, and the jobs that require a higher education. You are severely naive if you think the low-pay, low-class jobs are full of harvard grads and other college alums.

Basically Middle and high school students will have to do 50 a year and college students up to 55 will have a choice to do 100 hrs and get a $4,000 tax credit.

you didn't mention post-secondary educations, you just said education. you should be more specific when making these statements so that i don't come to the conclusion that you are retarded.

Every is not cut out for college education, why slam everyone with higher taxes to fund universal education so the people who aren't cut out for it can go on subsidized (even free) tuitons? The possibility of the failure rate is huge. I understand that many people can't afford education, but at the same time, many people are just not dedicated or intelligent enough to be able to make it through college. Colleges should be filled with people who deserve to be there, the kids who busted their asses in highschool and are willing to put the effort in to reap the rewards an education can bring. NOT the shiftless people who dropped out of highschool or just never tried. When people like this are given a break that the hardworker never got, that is incredibly unfair.

this is the part i don't get, it says "require" but it's a requirement that offers a tax exemption...so if you are required to do this, and you don't do it, what happens? you just don't get the tax exemption? or do they punish you?

they need to be more specific so that less threads on NS are started over something like this.

and that is a hallmark of communism, and ultimately, socialism. everyone is rewarded equally for unequal work. You work hard to earn your money while your neighbor who sleeps all day lives off of your hard work. I would love someone to validate this ideology, because it just cannot be done.

This is not surprising, it fits perfectly well with the socialist

propaganda movement-- look at how it was done in the former communist countries.

Control the media, get everybody to participate in community service -

beginning in first grade (!!), go after the ones who speak out.

With this, we will have someone being "paid" to organize the "Community

Service",someone being "paid" to implement the "Community Service",

someone being paid to supervise the "Community Service", someone being

"paid" to oversee who does the "Community Service", someone being

"paid" to keep track of the hours the youth perform their "Community

Service, of course we need "transportation" so someone will be "paid"

to be the "Head of Transportation", you will have to hire a

"Transporter", (someone to drive the bus"), a "paid person" to ride the

bus to insure the saftey of the students. On and On and On !!!!!!!!!!

Just the Beginning!!!!!!!!

yeah sorry about that, I'm writing a research paper on Operation Overlord as I Newschool, so I'm a bit discombobulated. I really need to get combobulated so I don't mix shit up.

do you ever wonder why words like combobulated and gruntled aren't words, but discombobulated and disgruntled are?

wow i never thought about that, thats weird, it would only make sense that they would be words...but they aren't! this will bother me all night, thanks haha

whoever taught you the theory of communism should have made sure you were paying attention instead of just sitting there thinking about the next pow day.

communism is not the idea of, as you put it, someone working while someone else sleeps. it is the idea that everyone would work, and the incentive to do so would be the betterment of society. in essance, a perfect system, but it would only work in a perfect world. communism will never work because so many people in thew orld are lazy fucks who would sleep all day, based on the ridiculous assumption that somebody else would do their part for them, and they would benefit from it, when in reality, they would benefit a lot more if they did their work instead of being lazy dumbass fucks and not working. i've said it before and i'll say it again, the only thing wrong with communism is people. people have a tendency to think about themselves and nobody else, so when somebody mentions communism, they imagine a world where everyone else is working while they dick around all day and benefit from everyone else's work.

communism will never work in the real world, because people are lazy fucks. if people were not lazy fucks and actually cared about the community rather than themselves, communism would work, perfectly. that will never happen, so the idea of communism will never work.

now socialism, on the other hand, can work. it works in many countries, one of the best examples is here, where i live, in Canada. so all of this stuff i a hearing about socialism being the worst thing ever and that it would bring down America is ridiculous, unless Americans are too stupid to make it work.

for you, i wouldn't worry about socialism happening in America, because you don't portray yourself as the type of person who would be making enough money to feel as if you were being treated unfairly in a negative way, sharing your wealth with people less successful than you.

Im actually on the track to becoming a successful, contributing individual. I'm in college, have a 3.9 GPA, and currently have a contract with a children's book publishing house for a manuscript I sent in a few months ago. I know writing isn't necessarily the primo job, but it is decent enough.

Uh read a book, have you ever heard him called william taft, you'd be like who the fuck is that. I'm not agrreing with this guys about using his name in a condescending manor, but stop jumping down his throat.

ok now that you think I'm not a republican, you're wrong. Now go drink the obama kool-aid with your friends and wait for the change to come when he puts you into the poor house and were all speaking spanish.

hahaha, i was going to add the kool-aid line, but i figured i'd be slammed. You summed up my feelings succinctly with your last 11 words.

so what's with the complaining about socialism? if anything, you'll end up benefiting from the work of someone in a "primo" position, and as it turns out most of the people i've met who are making that kind of money are more than happy to share some of it to help society, perhaps help less fortunate people pay for their children's education, give it to charity, etc., and that is on top of being taxed more because they have more to give. most of the really wealthy people i know are a lot more sympathetic than the stereotype would lead you to believe.

but you make it sound like everyone's gonna go to harvard now or something. we're talking money to go to community college and shit too

as was already said im pretty sure, in canada weve always needed this... and honestly, its not that bad at all, in fact you may even learn something

get the stick out of your ass. McCain lost, deal with it. Complaining about it and using fox news' cute way of making fun of obama is lame.

Im too lazy to read what people have said, but here's the actual policy:

His plan is to offer an option where if a college student does 100 hours of community service per year, they will receive 4 grand off their tuition for that year. It WONT be mandatory
