Do Athletes Deserve Millions of Dollars?

its all relative. the richer sports give their athletes more money. its really simple to understand and has little to do with what the actual sport is and which sport takes more skill than another sport. more money = more pay.

yeah, i kinda assumed people would understand that the theory doesnt apply if you were in the desert about to die. lol
people value different products or different skills differently depending on circumstances.

at this point in time, we have no shortage of teachers, or water. lol (in USA)

Would you think, if you saw this guy randomly on the street, he was a pro athlete?

deserve is a bad word. no one gets paid what they deserve. They do however get paid what they are valued at (at-least in this country).

people put a high value on professional sports, thus there is people willing to pay high level athletes that much to play. Why because in the mind of the team that player is worth $salery.

people are only willing to pay teachers so much so teachers only get paid so much. If the citizens of this country placed a higher value on education you would see teachers paid more.

but no Joe would rather pay $40 a month for espn as well as a handfull of $30 tickets then put an additional $20 a year towards an education tax.

well joe is choosing (choice being key) to fund X sports team.

he would have no choice if there were a tax levied.

whats worse is that my state is opening up a fancy new baseball stadium that myself (the little guy) built for billionaires to own. and millionaires to play in. rationalize that one for me. lol

I think they are overpaid.

but they are worth millions to some extent, in that they are such a profitable marketing tool. and they know it. so they demand millions, and we pay for it because of their marketing potential and popularity of viewers.

joe can vote for the tax.

for some reason many conservative nuts keep forgetting that we get to vote for our legislative representatives, or on local and state initiatives. And some how the laws that are being pushed by the legislatures that were voted into office by a democratic vote are 'forcing' taxes on their constituents. If you don't like a bill then write your congress men telling them so.

And I can't really rationalize the stadium thing. except that my state/city has voted to do so twice now. Basically people would rather add 3% to sales tax to keep a baseball team in their city then 2% to help improve high-school education, or higher education for that matter. There are good statistics to show that a good instate university that produces top level graduates does a lot for a states economy. Georga realized that and voted for the hope scholarship, with good results.

our society has decided that everyone is better off when everyone recieves an education.

beats somalia, if you moved there you would not have to pay for anyone else's kid's education.

no

they get paid millions, get the best treatment, and are loved by the common man.

they do what ever they want, when they want, how they want.

if you sat these guys down at some every day job that makes a good salary, lets say 150k a year, they wouldnt know what the fuck to do, and i doubt they would be able or willing to learn.

they have the easiest jobs in the world, they do what they love, the entertain, while some people make shit actually working hard at jobs they hate just to support their families.

haha i know my tax dollars fund plenty of things i see no benefit from. the stadium only being an easily understood / shining example.
people are ok with all sorts of erroneous subsidies. if the subsidy is their subsidy.
thread derailment imminent. but i for one would like to see steps taken to greater privatize education. however responding to exactly what you wrote. what good is your ability to read and write if i cannot interact with you? IE so many people lacking the most basic of education that they are un able to function in society.

im saying it is a choice if you have the mindset. of course theres millions of people who arent pushing themselves to potential. its athletes, musicians and extremely tallented artists who have put way more time into their profession

I can guarantee you not one profesional athlete has just been born talented, IF any one of us one this site put as much effort as a pro put into their sport we would see the same results from anyone. each pro works at levels that any person IF their mind was set to it would have to work to get to the position they are at in their lives.

they absolutley dont get to do whatever they want when they want. That image is generated by media and telivision shows that show their party life and them fucking around. They are constanly keeping in shape and improving their skills and pushing themselves harder than any other people in roder to be the best at what they do. their lives are not just sitting around goofing off. The have the most commitment out of the majority of people in the world and have to constantly keep that commitment going to stay at the top of the game.

I think athletes completely deserve the money they make. They entertain hundreds of thousands of customers, bring in millions in revenue, and have skills that cannot be replicated by anyone.

You may complain that teachers are more essential to society (they obviously are) and it's not fair that they make so much less than athletes, but there are so many more people who can teach and each individual teacher brings so much less happiness to the average person than a pro athlete does.

On a side note, I really don't think teachers have it all that bad. Where else could you find a job making 50k (depending on where you live) that only requires 180-190 days of work a year? I agree that teachers are insanely important to society, but c'mon, they really don't have a raw deal.

no there arent.

theres a difference between a body behind a desk in a classroom, and a competent teacher.

Are you seriously suggesting that there are only as many competent teachers as there are world class athletes?

Oh? I was unaware that income was based on how much happiness one brings to society. Clowns are making bank then.

I don't think you truly grasp what a good teacher does, and how hard they work. Even though you only see them 180-190 days a year for around 8 hours a day does not mean that that is how long they are at school for.

Competent teachers are fucking hard as hell to find. Most are fucking stupid as shit.

And don't get me started on college professors.... because as the famous professor Farnsworth stated:

"I don't teach Fry, I'm a Professor"

precisely. in early. there late. parent teacher conferences. lesson plans, tutoring, summer school in the summer. not to mention workshops, classes to further expand knowledge and teaching techniques.

What I actually meant was "utility," but I figured happiness was a better word to use.

I bet you can think of at least 15 people you know who scream at their television during an exciting game. Who makes them act like that? The athletes, and these athletes make hundreds of thousands of people act like that every game. No matter how important a teacher is, he/she will never have that much of an impact on that many people.

I completely respect teachers and know how important they are, but there are hundreds of other professions that work just as hard and make the same if not less per hour than teachers.

Also, it's just asinine to think that competent teachers are as rare as professional athlete's making millions. Let's say that there are 4000 athletes making over a million dollars (a number I'm virtually certain is too high). This works out to 4 competent athletes per US school district (assuming 16000 school districts in the US). There is NO WAY there are only 4 people in each school district that aren't just a body behind a desk. Hell, in high school I had at least 4 competent teachers every year.

it makes sense that they get paid as much as they do...

do they deserve to make as much as they do? I dont think so.

in economic terms they do, and actually are underpaid. All sports organizations are monopolistic to some extent and this gives them a large amount of buyer power. What salary does an athlete get when he goes into the nfl draft? Whatever the team chooses to pay him, and if he doesn't like it is he gonna go play for the "other" football league? Although there salaries are still very high, think about the shortened life expectancy, injuries, and off-season work outs. It all adds up.

If you think about it like that.

All we do is strap wood planks on our feet and huck ourselves down the mountain right?

pfff its so easy

so none. im not debating salary here, people will get paid what they get paid.

but to imply that athletes help more people or have a greater societal impact is pretty idiotic.

they only make those millions because of their popularity. they make money for their sponsors so the sponsors pay them as well as give them free stuff. They bring people to competitions and make it so the competitions can sell the rights to tv stations like ESPN if it is big enough. They make videos that are then sold to make money.

The bottom line is that these athletes only get paid these millions because they make so much money for the people who pay them.

There's no benefit to entertainment? Be honest, how much did you spend on skiing and ski related products in the past 5 years?

If you read what I said earlier, you'd know that I think teachers are way more important to society. But I stand by my original point: each individual athlete has a greater collective impact on the population than any teacher ever will, and they are paid accordingly.

a ton. that doesnt mean its beneficial to society.

and something to think about with respect to teachers impact on the population. inventors, politicians, everyone that shapes the planet into what it is, are educated by teachers. the worlds brilliant minds didnt become brilliant from watching monday night football, they did from their education.

You are completely right.

The problem I see with society now is that Americans are fucking retards. I mean not only do athletes get paid for doing nothing important to society, look at fucking DR. Phil. He's rich and famous for being a dumb shit head. He tells average Americans who are at an exponential rate losing there ability to have common sense. This being said, they are stupid enough to buy stuff for entertainment, which leads me to my next point. Due to America's stupidity, the economy has seen its recent crash along with many Americans losing money rapidly. New age Americans would rather buy themselves a new 50 inch plasma screen HD TV every year rather than use the same TV for a good 9 years (what I do). I feel this is the direct impact we get. So I honestly did not see this recession as too shocking.

Now how this relates to the thread? well... Athletes are paid millions because American's are retarded. Plain and Simple.

but the economic crisis isnt directly from buying that 50 inch tube.

thatd be all well and good if they could afford it.

the problem is billy bob maxes out 3 credit cards buying shit like tvs, and then wonders why he ends up in the financial crapper. now this is both his fault for being crappy with his money, and credit cards fault for letting the dude do it in the first place.

actually.

Barack Obama and his socialist agenda are THE GREATEST THREAT to 'merica right now.
glenn beck and sean hannity told me so.

commies arnt on the horizon right now. although, given time. anythings possible.
