so far most of the replies to this thread (first page anyway) have made me laugh pretty hard.
This is a theory, but I'm pretty sure the reason there is always a gap there is because those big trees you always see in pics beside the landing always stop the wind, so the snow always gets dumped directly behind them to make that massive pile of snow for the landing. I've seen this happen by trees all the time, so it kinda makes sense. So theoretically, if they cut down those trees, there would be no more landing and hence, no more gap. I probably shouldn't say this in case I give any ski patrollers on here ideas, Or probably everyoen knows this already and I just made a huge ass of myself by explaining something everyone knows.
