Derek Spong Crash

Your opinion may change if you see the first person helmet camera view of Mike Wilson doing that exact same jump...

You get an actual feeling of how fast they were actually going (98MPH), it's crazy.

But yeah, from that angle it doesn't look "deadly" bad.

yea thats what i'm saying. i guess the angle doesn't do it justice, i guess i expected it to be way more gnar. it kinds of puts things in perspectiv you know? (he was going like 90), but that kind of freaks me out in how normal it seemed, like how similar it looked to fucking up the biggest jump in a decent park, yet he almost fuckign died.

but proly just teh angle

According to Schoening:

"he came up short breaking 3 or 4 ribs, did something to his spleen (his

bro said they wern't sure)He also ripped 2 out of 3 layers of the

aorta...for those of you that don't know what that is, its the pump to

your heart and basically if you tear all 3 your dead. Dspong had heart

surgery yesterday, I'm not exactly sure what Evan (his bro) told me if

there was a 90% chance of him being paralyzed, i was in to much shock

to even remember. I was lucky enough to talk to derek not long after he

got out of surgery and he sounded great for the condition's he was in."

he ruptured 3 veins going to the main arteries of his heart and collapsed a lung, derek is a tough kid... his chance of survival was very low.. for him to hit that jump first before any of the other pros that are twice his age took balls, derek is the man.

that whole set up just looked dangerous. You could hear how hard the snow was on the inrun. When he hit the snow had no give to it, it gave in what looked like a foot.

in the BC when they are jumping, the snow has some give at least. And as a result he nearly died, this really errks me. i dont think i will buy a "Rage" film, simply because they come up with unnecessarirly dangerous jumps.

no shit that setup is fucked, there appears to be a good chance of either not clearing it and dieing or overshooting it and dieing.

Dude.... you don't need to see it to know that going 90 mph and comiming to a complete stop hitting a solid wall of snow can kill you.

new news to that...

mike wilson was interviewed by the german ski magazine skiing - the next level.. first he talked about his personality and what happened at that gap jump crash he did in yearbook...blablabla...

and then following question´s asked:

This year at the rage shooting on mt shasta where u also took place in derek spong got injured very hard. Is there a comparison between yours and derek´s crash?

mike answered:

the same on both crashes is that they happened on kickers which - as they were - couldn´t be jumped safety. but there are a lot of differences. my jump was just to big. honestly we had no idea what we were doing. but the booters ball kicker just didnßt had enough pop, cuz a size like that is normal today. So Derek´s crash makes me way more angry cuz the crew should had known, how inrun and jump off play together. At the msp shoot we had no experience and nobody knew how to build jumps like that. i wasn´t in the park @dereks crash and when i heard about it i get really angry. derek is a great skier but he had not enough experience to know how to jump it(other who got that issue, plz find a better translation 4that). he should have insist on the jump being shaped new. but if you want to do something so hard you act not in your mind.if nobody does it, you try it.although you have no clue if it works. i´ve done things like that too and it was big bullshit. But by looking back i noticed that i just was the guy who attempted everything just beacuz nobody was ready to try something new. at least i learned in this way alot about inrun-speed and flying curves...

16 or 17 not sure...

no the old one he´s talking about can be seen in yearbook and the new overshoot from the same kicker as spongs crash is in corduroy

The whole booters ball thing was suuper sketch to begin with. They should have never of gotten the idea. I mean, if the jump is big enough to merrit being towed in by a snowmobile down a hill so that you can go 98mph, then, yeah. No good.

hes fine and moving about...im thinking its just no vigorous physical activity this season. dont quote me on that tho

shit, think of running in 90mph straight into a wall! thats the same pain! im so glad i lived it trough!!! i hope he gets well!

that angle didnt do it justice. looked like a 70 ft park jump even tho i know full well it wasnt.

fuck it looked like it hurt tho.
