Derek Spong Crash

he broke 5 ribs and ruptured 3 of the 4 walls surrounding his aeorta. serious internal bleeding. he undershot the huggeee rage films gap that is in the new feeskier.

theres a 5 page thread describing what happend just search Derek Spong Injury.......

Anders, theres no way rage would ever post that footage anywhere cause it makes you want to buy corduroy

There is only a 1% chance you will live if you tear it, and in the backcountry i bet that drops to about 0.....

after watching it once at the private premier then 3 times the next night at the actual one.....i can say i never want to watch it again. Its SO burley....As sky said when he pulled all the riders up after the movie, its lucky he was standing there.

huge resposiblity issues with rage films. the following day when derek was in the hospital begging for his life rage films didnt only destroy the dangerous feature (91 mph to clear it) but they sent mikey wilson in after it. Does anyone else not agree that this is completely irresponsible...

YES.

Not only would I have been by his side during that tramatic experience, but I also would have shut down that shoot for good...as opposed to fucking promoting somebody else to hit it the very next day, just for some meazly shot - After a 16 year old almost DIED for the cause of a ski movie. Whack ethics. It just isn't worth it!

90% people that suffer an injury like dereks (2 of the 3 layers in the aorta then heart surgery) either die or are paralized.......derek is neither and plans on skiing this winter (just no park)

Not the same day as the injury they shouldn't. People should go away and contemplate the feature and come back another time with better conditions after more consideration/calculation and try again. I'm gonna agree on the responsibility thing, although the athletes have to take some responsibility as they choose to hit the feature, but there is a lot of pressure from sponsors/peers/to get good segments on film. This is especially true for those under 18. Is 91mph accurate? I find it hard to believe park skiiers were going that fast hitting features with park skis and clothes.

same day probably not....next day?, the conditions change so much between the morning (when derek was hitting it) and afternoon when mike hit it

You are missing the whole point.

Would you seriously have the nerve to keep running a video shoot while one of your

16 yr-old athletes was on death's door?!! Fuckin A.

I agree. pete (main rage film guy) is a fuckhead. completely reckless with his decisions. hopefully he will get the shit kicked out of him in the next pointless fight that he starts.

dood its not irrisponsable, they are pushing the sport instead of being pussys, i feel erally bad for derek, but i think he didnt make it cuz hes smaller then eevryoneelse and didnt have enough speed, and plus, mike wilson is gfamous for overshooting jumps so the figured this would be a good jump for him

^true, it is sick to see them pushing it. and the rest of the rage crew is sick. however, pete is an agro piece of shit, ask anybody that films with him and they will say the same thing. he is irresponsible and probably a little retarted.

try knowing wtf your talking about before opening your mouth.....Wilson wanted to hit it the next day, there was NO PRESSURE to do so.....

first off get your story straight.

also it was actually a 98 MPH tow it, then because of the setup wilson hit the actual jump around 85 i believe

Pete is a good guy, don't talk trash on someone for something where you don't know the situation. The only reason the shot was in the movie was because derek approved it and wanted it in. The only reason it was hit again was because wilson wanted to. Derek knew the risks when he volunteered to guinea it, and what happened was sad and lucky at the same time. The way the movie showed it (not doing a whole thing on it, putting in the shots they have from the hopital ext. is because they wanted to "keep it light hearted" of sorts, hard to explain but i talked to sky about it for a while and i agreed with his disicion of how he went about it.

If that's true, then he may be working with the right filming crew. Shooting the day after an accident like that is crazy. Wouldn't it look bad if two skiers nearly killed them selves in as many days?

Going bigger isn't progression. Every action sport has gone through this stage, yet we are content on trying it anyways. Progression is developing something new & novel. Going bigger and bigger is not new. Doing a cork 10 on a 60 foot jump IS NOT progression over a cork 10 on a 50 foot jump. It's the same trick. As a sport, we've finally hit the threshold where going bigger has taken on serious risks.

Some crews will continue to focus on the size of their features. Although still impressive they will eventually loose out to more passionate individuals who can improve the sport without just skiing faster.

I think we'll see this transition sooner than you think.

two riders DID nearly kill themself, wilson went 190ft to flat......

the jump was the same size as the other one, around 100ft....

"Looming large during this time was the infamous opposing jump, fully symmetrical as the current jump, and a slightly better landing. After Derek had finished up with an impressive morning shoot he, Mike, AJ (de Saint Falle), and Alex Dillard went to the other side, the "2nd" jump, to begin speed checks. The in run for this jump was longer, with more flat bottom towards the lip. This meant there had to be more speed from the top, which we all thought existed due to the length being double and the pitch steeper. The three brave soles tested speed for a while, Alex stating, "I am going so fast my skis are barely staying on the ground." The other three soldiers felt confident with their speed, but opted not to hit the jump due to poor light. Some of the riders agreed to show back up the following morning to session the "2nd" jump; it would be a session that lasted only one hit.

The following morning Derek was up and eager to get the 2nd jump underway. We prepared the jump by raking, grooming, slipping, digging, and salting. Derek speed checked numerous times, each time looking as though he had the speed needed to carry the distance. After his final speed check we all agreed Derek had enough speed.

Derek made his final ascent to the top. He began his march down the in run, to the lip, and off. Derek was in the air. He came towards the knuckle. He did not have the distance. He came up five feet short. He would be life flighted to the Redding hospital, have multiple broken ribs and broken discs in his back, a partially torn spleen, and two layers torn in his aorta. Derek is making incredible progress and should be fine.

The day was done.

After receiving news that Derek's surgeries went well and he would live, the crew of skier's were mildly hungry to get back to jibbin' the following day.

Another beautiful morning was underway and Mike was ready to try his hand at the infamous 2nd jump. Again the in run was prepped and Mike decided to have assistance via snowmobile. Although he did not witness the horrendous accident the day before, he has had his experience's coming up short; he would make every effort possible to not have that happen on this jump. Mike decided to add more pop to the jump and tow in as fast as the sled could go; a 100+ MPH to be exact.

Mike made numerous speed checks and decided it was time. He made his ascent to the top, turned around, and made his march down the in run. He hit the lip at 85 MPH, blasted off the lip, and was way the fuck in the air. He cleared the knuckle by a ton and landed in the bottom of the tranny. He traveled 190 ft., his skis stayed on, and he had enough for one day. Biggest air I have ever seen. "

taken from the rage site...should answer some questions

On a feature that big I'd want to do a few quick n dirty physics calcs to guesstimate the speed, then have a radar gun on my speed checks. Less painful that testing with your body.

you guys are making it sound like they didn't even think of derek. while derek was in the hopsital they all came and visited at least once a day. dereks not the type of kid that would want you to not hit something because of him.

fuck whoever was talking shit on pete (main dude at rage) thats bullshit because how many filmers do you know that FORCE other riders to hit a jump? none. it was all up to the riders decision whether or not the jump got hit.

hmmmm lets just point out the fact the kohl is dereks best friend, soooo i think he knows what hes talking about.

the reason i made this thread is becuase my friend clamis he saw the crash somewhere he was probly just talking out of his ass.

i dont think the head guy at rage pressuerd anybody to hit it most people saw the crash and if they didnt want to hit they had a perfectly good reason not too, mike is just ballsy as hell and charges.

fuck you, show some respect you fuckin bitch, d spong was instantly unconcincoious, he tore 3 of the 4 layers to the main pump to your heart, the docs told him he will either be paralyzied for the rest of his life, or he wouldnt come out of surgery alive, show some respect dude seriosuly

and that he would live!!... thats just fucking stupid. if a friend on mine was in the hospital with his life on jeapordy. i would not be thinking about getting a shot. i know wilson is a little loose and doesn't think too straight sometimes, but this is pathetic.

why has skiing turned into this stupid race for obtaining the "biggest"?

skiers need to become more creative with their skiing rather than just relying on going bigger.

so in other words your try to progress a movie even if death is at stake the day after a 16 year old almost died? Time for rage to stop making the same movie year after year and go into stunt films. Some of the rage guys would be great stunt coordinators in hollywood, and it would sure make more then DVD sales...

wow, you really are a fucking idiot....first off you bash someone that is agreeing with you, try reading before you post

It wasn't like they weren't being safe about the whole thing, they spend their time every step of the way doing things correctly....After the crash happened, the mood was far from "oh lets go get some shots"

"After the crash, some stood alone in shock, unable to grasp exactly what had happened. Others huddled in groups off to the side. Yet others wept. Spong was rushed by life flight to nearby Mercy Medical Center, where he stayed for six days." -Powder.com

and have you seen Corduroy yet? have you seen any of the booters ball 2 footy????

im sorry but if you don't think that the features are creative then i have no respect for you. Yes they built a big jump, 100ft, but the setup was one of a kind. It was far from the largest thing ever built, they weren't just going for size..... Not to mention all the other things that were there, it wasn't just that jump. Have you ever seen double tree jibs? How bout quarterpipe to down rail?

skiing is moving in a more creative direction in both personal and man-made feature aspects. unique features and jumps, unique approaches, more unique tricks, etc... but there is still this ever going trend of going bigger, higher, faster, more. and that trend will always be there.

but my point is that there needs to be less of a focus on "bigger" and more focus on the creative aspect of skiing.

in my opinion its a little over the top and it shows with more and more athletes getting ass hammered by these unforgiving massive features.

^^^ i agree in a general stand that skiing is going bigger and bigger, for example julian carr has a 290ft cliff planned. Things are getting to the point where people die instead of getting badly injured.

i guess the last thing i have to say about it is that derek was in stable and good condition before the shoot continued, he was already out of surgury and doing well (which was the hard part) Knowing those guys, i know they were thinking of him and it wasn't just like, oh derek got hurt, lets go shoot......

man you guys are pathetic. you guys don't even know what the fuck happend. you guys talking shit on wilson and them about still skiing the next day.....thats bullshit. get your facts straight before you speak. Wilson and basically everyone at booters ball visited dspong tons after he got out of surgery.

also to add onto that. If anything derek would want them to be skiing. derek isn't the type of kid who would want them to miss such perfect days of skiing for filming and stuff because of him.
