Derek Jeter Appreciation

His last game at Yankee Stadium tonight...

Baseball fan or not, Yankee fan or not, you gotta give this guy some credit. The level of loyalty, sportsmanship, and class that this dude showed over the years is unreal.

Hes a clown and youre a clown for liking him.

one of, if not the best to ever turn a 4 6 3. among a million other things. and i'm a red sox fan

I grew up with him as a Yankee. He was the first player that I idealized. When I think of the Yankees I think of Jeter, and that says it all right there.

Don't get me wrong, I love baseball and have the utmost respect for Jeter but everything is getting a little out of hand.

This whole farewell tour is a little outlandish with everyone giving him a gift. Baseball has seen its greats before and will see them again.

That being said, baseball evokes more emotion from me than any other sport and I am absolutely impressed by his dedication over the years.

I will watch his last game to the end just like I would for any of the other greats.

Story time, my friends dad used to coach baseball at a local high school in Kalamazoo (where i live and where derek jeter grew up) Now when Jeter was in high school he was kind of a local celebrity just because he was so good. The team my friend's dad coached for started to get cocky, and they all thought they were hot shit, so he sat them down and had a chat with them. He basically told them, "look at this kid Derek Jeter, everyone thinks he's amazing but guess what, odds are he won't ever play in the MLB, so neither will any of you." And ever since Jeter started playing in the majors he hasn't heard the end of that conversation.

But i idolized Jeter growing up, especially because he's from my hometown. So much respect for the guy.

i agree with this, the "humble" move would've been to announce his retirement late in the season or after the season, but i'm assuming it had more to do with agents/sponsors/contracts

Jeter is a douche. I respect him as a player and he is one of the greatest offensive players of all time, no one can argue that. However, his fielding definitely isn't at the top and he's an arrogant cock off the field.

According to two historical play-by-play-based systems, Baseball Prospectus’s Fielding Runs Above Average and Baseball-Reference’s Total Zone, Jeter has cost his team more in the field than any other player in history, with both methods assessing the damage at 230 to 260 runs. Look up what both of those are if you want to.

And his stupid "jump throw" has never been necessary. He could easily do a plant and throw like every other shortstop in the history of baseball.

Off the field, he gave all of his ladies a signed picture of him after the did the nasty. A "class act" doesn't do that.

Yankees star Derek Jeter, one of New York’s most eligible hunks since his split with longtime gal pal Minka Kelly, is bedding a bevy of beauties in his Trump World Tower bachelor pad—and then coldly sending them home alone with gift baskets of autographed memorabilia. -New York Post

I am not saying this next story on reddit is by any means credible, but it's funny and I wouldn't put it past him.

Jeters carrer ended perfectly, and I have nothing but respect for the guy. But this whole farewell thing was blown way out of porportion.

Respect the man (as I honestly feel like he has conducted himself in one of the most professional manners outside of the game out of anyone, in a situation where you're expected to slip up and go full AROD...)

Hate the Player... mostly because Yankees. Honestly never really felt like he was that great or exciting to watch or anything... and when the Yankees were actually winning, I didn't really find baseball all too exciting or fun to watch.

Ho hum, overhyped. Cal Ripken and Greg Maddux both had way more "wow, they're gone?" factor to me than the "almighty #2"

At the beginning of the season I was like all like wow, dudes a legend and hes leaving the game, Damn. Now I feel like its been so drawn out and annoying. The same shit happened with Riveria.

Though it is pretty cool his last AB at Yankee stadium was a walk off.

I'll just leave this here. I love his character and his professionalism, but he wasn't great compared to other Yankees.

GO BUCS!!!!

PART 2!

I once got the opportunity to throw the first pitch at Yankee stadium when I was had just finished going through chemotherapy. I was still not "healthy", not sick anymore, but not healthy. I got to meet the entire team and every single member of the team was nice, took the time to shake my hand, speak with me, and generally be standup awesome people.... except for Jeter. He didn't even make eye contact with me. What a dick. Nick Johnson even played catch with me to help me warm up for the first pitch and Alfonso Soriano gave me his hat, realized it was too big, and made a batboy go get another for me that fit me properly. Jeter was too busy focusing on meeting with is yoga coach.

Now, the one with the shitty media hype, Barry Bonds, saw me while I was bald and sick with cancer at age 10, and he proceeded to part the fucking entire crowd and walked right up to me. THAT was a good guy move. When you're on the verge of death and someone like that parts a crowd to come talk to you, it means a lot. Ignoring me like Jeter did is not a great way of garnering respect from fans.

Well goodbye Jeter respect I once had...

And to be perfectly honest, Barry Bonds was always pretty good with the fans in SF... it's just his later career and the Balco thing, and all of the overhyped madness at the phone booth ballpark that totally tainted him

At yankee stadium 10 years ago jeter was at bat. I pulled out my camera and told my friend to grab hers because jeter was going to hit a homer on the next pitch. He did.

/cool story hansel but really that happened.

now i will get to know what it feels like to be alive at a time when derek jeter does not play for the yankees

As a die hard cubs fan I have nothing but respect for that man.

i think it's safe to say no matter what team you like, jeter is one of your favorites. He just seems to be a good human being.

ps my friend has the probable start for the cubs tonight... First career start!

Class act and the GOAT. Legend. Going to miss jeter grew up watching him. Used to sit front row behind yankees batters box and he would always go " Whatsup fellas" and give you a fist bump every time.

How can you say he's the GOAT? Maybe the most professional, and I would agree 100%, but statistically, he's not even the greatest Yankee.

Best part of all of this thread - the only thing the Yankees can even celebrate this year is Jeter... otherwise they're fucking terribad.

As a Cardinals fan I have to say I respect the man. True legend.

As a Cards fan, you had Ozzie Smith - best Short Stop of all time... Jeter can't hold a candle to that.

Cool bro! Thanks for your positive contribution to the thread!

The Red Sox paid LL Bean to make him a custom pair of Bean Boots. I think that is testament enough to how influential of a guy he is.

Dingo has put more into this thread than you have into the whole NS community

Oh man, I better up my game. Contributing to the "NS community" is an essential and important part of life. You sound like a tool.

I don't know how his last game could've been better , seriously what an eding.

oh , yeh , it could've been a playoff game.

one of the all time greats, very respectable as a player. Im not going to lie I'm a red sox fan but I really have liked Derek Jeter for a long time. I mean he was there at shortstop when the sox came back from a 3-0 deficit; not saying that like its an insult but he has been an important part of baseball for me since I could remember.

However the whole process of Derek Jeter retiring was ridiculous in my opinion. Im sorry, I cannot stand it when an all time great goes on a giant retirement jerk off fest with the media and then fans. The past 2 months has basically been an on going Derek Jeter commercial. It was just a bit too much like watching Ray Lewis cry in during the national anthem every time he was faced with an elimination game in my opinion.

Lol, you're the one who was giving me shit for not contributing 'positively' (which is funny, because fans of every other team would find this as a positive contribution in their mind) and then you backtrack to say that contributing is meaningless or useless or something?.

here's an idea. Next time you start something, finish it rather than being sent home to your mother, child.

Jeter an arrogant cock on the field? You have to be kidding me... Please show me a couple examples of jeter being arrogant.. PLEASE

Jeter costing his team on the field? That's why he has 5 world championships, right? Who cares if he's not the best on the field, nobody is saying he is, you're just trying to find a way to shit on a legend, why? Because he wasn't on your team? Hahahaha.

You've gotta be kidding me... Jeter not being exciting to watch? 3500 hits and hes not exciting to watch? The flip play? Jump throw? The dive? Mr. November? 3000th hit being a homerun? His first game back from injury going yard on his first pitch on the first at bat? I can go on...

Fuck Jeter, fuck the Yankees.

Ov er Rat ed

Typical shitty bandwagon redsox fan attitude.... Oh wait, I was at Jeters second to last game at Fenway the other day and redsox fans were chanting jeter all game, I can understand you hating the yankees, but Jeter? Don;t see how you can hate the guy, he was mine and basically every other kids role model growing up... Basically no rumors or anything through 20 years on the YANKEES...

So just because he didn't acknowledge one kid that makes him a "dick"? What a joke dude, do you understand how much time and money he has put into Turn 2 Foundation? And how much nice stuff he does for kids at basically every single game... Go look up Derek Jeter Make a Wish Foundation or anything. keep hating...

Hahahaha you've gotta be kidding me, you have zero respect for Jeter? Lol you must be a huge baseball fan!

-the biggest jeter fan on NS. this week's been a tough week for my emotions.

Yawn. Good riddance. Back to your regularly scheduled Yankees failing to buying championships... or a playoff for that matter.

Miguel Tejada had more MVP's

Walt Weiss had more ROY's

Ozzie Smith had more Gold Gloves.

Nomar has more batting titles.

I'm pretty sure Eckstein had more world series MVP's...

Either way. Yes. Boring player to watch. Yawn. Yawn. Yawn.

Now, Rickey Henderson... THAT was an exciting fucking player.
