Plot twist! Went with DOMY and currently watching it...To be completely honest, I'm a tad disappointed...For a movie that was a 2 year project with Red Bull Media House, I am a little let down. Don't get me wrong, the footage and skiing is pretty awesome and I have bought MSP's films every year for the last 8 years, despite how annoyed I get with the redundant "MSP humor." (I'll bitch about it all I want but I still MSP, please keep that in mind while reading the following post)...My issue is with the delivery and format of the film.
The movie starts with the whole "live a life you love, don't fall victim to the everyday rat race life" vibe, which was expected, and corny. Then it goes into a little intro scene of banger shots, which gets you amped for the flick, but then once it ends, that vibe falls off....
It goes into a 6 minute montage of how there's a lack of snow in California, Washington, etc...And it kind of repeats itself and gets old after 30 seconds...We get it, there's no snow, now give us the opening segment that gets the movie fired up.....Wait for it.....
Didn't happen. Super mellow "soul" pow segment is next (keep in mind, opening segment of the film) and although it is a pretty cool pow seg, it is not any different than any other powder segment that we have seen in ski films. It's actually probably pretty far down in the pow segment ranks...Whatever happened to the CLAIM pow seg that opened the film back in 2008? THAT was a fucking pow segment.
Then the movie tries to blend back into the old guy who is the image of "live a life you love", although he is seen as living alone and kinda mentally disturbed in a small cabin in the middle of nowhere. After that, there's a lifestyle segment involving Cody, Banks, Richard, and Sander that is entirely GoPro and groomer shots, with everyone yelling "that was sick" in the background the entire time. This is a 2 year project with Red Bull Media House, I don't want to see GoPro footage of butters on groomers....I'd be fine with it if it were a segment of a normal movie, but if you're going the "Red Bull, 2 Yr Project" route, get rid of that shit.
TALKING. Fucking talking in MSP flicks, god damn. When are they gonna learn that no one wants to hear the guys on top of the line saying "dude, that would be so sick if I like gapped that side onto that side"..."so huge dude, diving board!"..."those cliffs are looking biggerrr and bigger dude!"
PARK SHOTS? Bobby has like 4 or 5 shots, which are unreal, but they are mixed in with Aspen Spora's footage...I love both of these guys, but what the fuck?? You can't put together a park shoot for a film that's on this level?? Less talking in the woods, more balance to the flick.
In conclusion, allI'm trying to say is that I think if you have the green light to produce a 2 year, Red Bull Media House project...Maybe try and assemble something epic and along the lines of Art of Flight....MSP stayed with MSP's format of movies, and it ended up ruining the flick and not taking advantage of the fact that they could've put together something really awesome here. I'm completely down with the Alan Watts theme, the skiing, the cinematography, and the stoke....but just don't over-do it with the commentary and lifestyle edits. Especially in a high scale film like this. I dunno, just my opinion.
It usually takes me a couple of viewings to come around to a ski flick though, so maybe this is just impulsive commentary, but I dunno....
