Days of My Youth or Almost Ablaze?

Alright, so I'm looking to get either the TGR or MSP flick on blu ray..I've been a big fan of both over the last few years, I own quite a few movies of each, and I'll probably purchase both of them by season's end, but I'm trying to figure out which one to get now...Anyone have any reviews?

I've seen Days of My Youth and I've only watched the trailer for Almost Ablaze. Almost Ablaze looked super gnarly but I really enjoyed seeing Michelle Parker's epic lines in Days of My Youth. (that's probably because I'm a girl tho) Days of My Youth made me remember why I love skiing so much. Almost Ablaze has the urban segment in Bosnia with Joss Christensen, Karl Fostvedt, and Chris Laker which looks really cool.

I Hope that helps some.

Days of My Youth IMO, those lines cody and co. skied were straight fucked.

i have seen the two of them and they were both awesome. I would go for days of my youth though. Yes there was less skiing than i expected for a 2 year project, yes i wish sean pettit was in there but the resort shredding segment, the insane lines, richard permin's all around gnarliness and the cinematography made it my favorite flick of the year. tgr did have one incredible night segment with crazy psychedelic patterns projected onto the snow which would look awesome on blu ray but msp's film was just a just a bit better overall

almost ablaze for sure. days of my youth got pretty boring and had too much talking and not enough skiing.

That's what I was afraid of...

Also, does Sammy have any shots in TGR? And is Ian Mac's segment pretty banger? His segment alone is usually worth it if he has a good year...

MSP is $29.95 plus $8 shipping? Dear lord...

And why are they only selling the collectors edition crap? They can't just sell the blu ray or dvd? Shit sucks.

I got Days of My Youth and wasn't all that impressed. It is nearly all back country. There is one scene sort of like Candid's one of those days eddit that was cool tho. Just get Less.

I was really surprised by this but I liked days of my youth, and did not like almost ablaze at all. At the premiere I tried to look up how long it was to see when it would be over.

i thought domy was pretty lame. Some sick lines and all that but if a movie can't have grade a skiing in it they have failed tremendously. The theme was half assed, the rider list was what, 7 people? The 'fun' section had some weak music and deep down inside it was the same old same old as most of the last 7 years.

I'm going with Almost Ablaze cause TGR has been my inspiration from the start,,, Sounds like MSP didn't make the most of a 2 year project.

Plot twist! Went with DOMY and currently watching it...To be completely honest, I'm a tad disappointed...For a movie that was a 2 year project with Red Bull Media House, I am a little let down. Don't get me wrong, the footage and skiing is pretty awesome and I have bought MSP's films every year for the last 8 years, despite how annoyed I get with the redundant "MSP humor." (I'll bitch about it all I want but I still MSP, please keep that in mind while reading the following post)...My issue is with the delivery and format of the film.

The movie starts with the whole "live a life you love, don't fall victim to the everyday rat race life" vibe, which was expected, and corny. Then it goes into a little intro scene of banger shots, which gets you amped for the flick, but then once it ends, that vibe falls off....

It goes into a 6 minute montage of how there's a lack of snow in California, Washington, etc...And it kind of repeats itself and gets old after 30 seconds...We get it, there's no snow, now give us the opening segment that gets the movie fired up.....Wait for it.....

Didn't happen. Super mellow "soul" pow segment is next (keep in mind, opening segment of the film) and although it is a pretty cool pow seg, it is not any different than any other powder segment that we have seen in ski films. It's actually probably pretty far down in the pow segment ranks...Whatever happened to the CLAIM pow seg that opened the film back in 2008? THAT was a fucking pow segment.

Then the movie tries to blend back into the old guy who is the image of "live a life you love", although he is seen as living alone and kinda mentally disturbed in a small cabin in the middle of nowhere. After that, there's a lifestyle segment involving Cody, Banks, Richard, and Sander that is entirely GoPro and groomer shots, with everyone yelling "that was sick" in the background the entire time. This is a 2 year project with Red Bull Media House, I don't want to see GoPro footage of butters on groomers....I'd be fine with it if it were a segment of a normal movie, but if you're going the "Red Bull, 2 Yr Project" route, get rid of that shit.

TALKING. Fucking talking in MSP flicks, god damn. When are they gonna learn that no one wants to hear the guys on top of the line saying "dude, that would be so sick if I like gapped that side onto that side"..."so huge dude, diving board!"..."those cliffs are looking biggerrr and bigger dude!"

PARK SHOTS? Bobby has like 4 or 5 shots, which are unreal, but they are mixed in with Aspen Spora's footage...I love both of these guys, but what the fuck?? You can't put together a park shoot for a film that's on this level?? Less talking in the woods, more balance to the flick.

In conclusion, allI'm trying to say is that I think if you have the green light to produce a 2 year, Red Bull Media House project...Maybe try and assemble something epic and along the lines of Art of Flight....MSP stayed with MSP's format of movies, and it ended up ruining the flick and not taking advantage of the fact that they could've put together something really awesome here. I'm completely down with the Alan Watts theme, the skiing, the cinematography, and the stoke....but just don't over-do it with the commentary and lifestyle edits. Especially in a high scale film like this. I dunno, just my opinion.

It usually takes me a couple of viewings to come around to a ski flick though, so maybe this is just impulsive commentary, but I dunno....

Also, I feel as if it's pretty contradictory for MSP to call Sammy C's trailer "TOO EPIC"...These MSP movies (when it's not joke segments) are completely "EPIC"... I don;t get it.

I'd like to hear some more people's reviews on this...I'm hoping that I just need to watch it one or two more times to start to like it...But I feel like it just did not deliver on the scale that it built itself on.

I can't believe you did no like the revey section that was my favourite section. It showed the type of skiing most of is actually do and showed how much fun you can have doing it. Such a good section.

I liked it, I just didn't think it was as awesome as it could be. Think about how awesome the CLAIM opening pow seg was...There's a lot of pow segs I could mention that were cooler than that.

This segment has got me more stoked to go skiing than anything else I've seen this year. It's awesome to see people having fun and ripping all over the mountain. Reminds me of Hot Lunch (if you haven't seen it, go find it).

I enjoyed DOMY and will continue to support MSP (Ski Movie was the first ski movie I bought) as time goes on, but I do agree. They probably could have done more with the two years they had. If they can put out a segment like Hoji's in Superhero's of Stoke every once and a while, it's good enough for me.

I hear ya man, and I feel the exact same way...However (and I think you know exactly what I mean) as cool and inspiring as the "groomer, having fun" segment was...you just simply expect more in a movie like this. Especially when that segment is within the first 15-20 mins of the film...You can't have GoPro shots when you could have Red Bull/RED Camera quality shit that you have been supposedly doing for the last 2 years.

W're on the same page though. I love MSP, I'm forever a fan and customer, but I was a little taken back by this film. You would think they would take advantage of the spectacular cinematography and everything else...I dunno, just an opinion.

Almost Ablaze was good, but just typical ski porn. Most standout shot for me was ian mac just shredding couloirs in la grave. Definitely agree where there were times at the premier that I checked the clock.

Really like days of my youth, thought it was an interesting take on a ski video. Rad lines by everyone were skied and the conversation on how scared they really are at the top of lines was better than the usual how epic the pow was. The line that Richard Permin skied in the resort was insane, compared to one of these days it made candide look like he's putzing along on blue groomers.

How bout the PBP movie? Anyone see it? Did they deliver?

This.

I haven't seen any discussion about it at all yet even though the premier like a month ago.
