Cr. Johnson

when did i say it was TOTALLY his fault, im just trying to say they both made a mistake, and i do agree that kye made a much bigger mistake.

so your telling me if you've skiied past something before and seen that the landing is clear you would still stop at the top of every feature you hit and check the landing. If I have checked it once that day, im going over it without checking for the rest of the day. theres no way im going to fuck up a good run to check a landing. it is kyes fault for knowing CR hit it before him and not seeing CR ski away and still hitting it. but it is just one big mistake. really i wouldnt push to blame either of them. Its a horrible accident, but not one that needs to be deemed on persons fault or the other.

BUT! If it was a train, he had no time to see if he rode away or not. Like they said, Kye (along with the others) were following CR.

I'm not trying to place blame...only make people more aware of preventable situations.

I guess I should rephrase this some....

skiing in a ski area you should always now what is in your landing unless somehow you can be positive it is clear.

Kye obviously didnt ski by it first to know it was clear...cause it wasnt.

Nor did I say stop at every feature.

But having a spotter or at least some sort of communication with others is important.

When I lived in CO I skied vail all the time and you had to check your landing everytime because lots of stupid people ski there and they would fucking stop in landing and under cliffs.

so this is an exact quote from your post:

"If I have checked it once that day, im going over it without checking for the rest of the day."

so there no possible way that someone may be under a cliff after you've check it once.

WOW......

Either way...the WHOLE point is that accidents like this one do not have to happen.

If my perfect line has to be interupted because I have to stop and make sure I'm not going to kill someone in my landing area....fine.

I may be pissed, but i would rather live with myself being pissed at someone in my landing than killing them.

and again...you dont have to stop. Ski smart, use spotters and radios, and it really isnt that hard.

if it was a train and they were all going back to back then Kye had no other option so yeah it would've been CR's fault for falling. Someone posted above that they saw it and that CR was collecting his stuff. well then maybe they were all hitting the same feature and Kye didnt check to see if CR rode away or what. if this was the case, then it was most likely Kyes fault.

Fuck the blame game. I call no fault on either or 50/50 fault on both. CR should of waited to collect his stuff, Kye should of checked to see if CR was gone. There are too many unknowns the only info anyone has is a small paragraph on the powder website. maybe you couldnt see below the roller or whatever, so Kyes chances of seeing if CR rode out were slim to non. maybe CR didnt know Kye was hitting the same feature.

Lets just hope CR is gonna recover and I also hope Kye isnt feeling this is all his fault. thats alot ot put on a kid.

i shoulda worded mine different. most of the areas where i ski, there isnt going to be people sitting under cliffs. I dont want to hit them, but its not my fault if I do. Its in the skiers code to not sit under rollers or where you cant be seen from above. Im not trying to be an ass. and yeah in a BC situation or in any powder, im not gonna ski away from my equipment and have to slog back up and get my shit. Its a horrible accident, I feel for both Kye and CR, both these guys are pros, not stupid groms and it really was just on small judgement error on both sides and the worst happened.

the places im not checking my landings in are where nobody else but me and a few buddies are around. I would never hit something unchecked onto a main trail or when lots of other people are around.

Wow CR is definitely one of the first guys i ever saw skiing in the movies and inspired me, I hope he has a speedy recovery, and yes i do hope kye is alright too

Ummm, he might not have been totally fine if he was wearing a helmet, but i'm pretty sure he wouldnt be in intensive care and in critical condition if he had a helmet on. He might've had a concussion and been out for a week or two, but he wouldnt be in a hospital fighting for his life.

Helmets do give you a HUGE advantage over not wearing one. Saying anything otherwise is being ignorant.

what did I say?

did I say "dont wear helmets?"

no.

I went on to say I always wear a helmet.

read up on how protective helmets are before you talk.

A helmet would have probably made some different....

but kept him out of the ICU? I highly doubt it.

Dont disillusion yourself thinking that a helmet will save your life. hitting a tree on 30 MPH...the helmet isn't going to make a difference.

Getting hit in the head by a flying object weight 100+ pounds at 30 MPH....please.

It would depend a lot on the helmet...but most single impact helmets like the giro nino dont offer that much protection.

So let me say this again so people arent confused....

I always wear a helmet and think everyone should always wear a helmet. They do make a difference...

But the level protection they actually give you isn't as good as you think.

you are an ass dude, do you have any idea how much it hurts to hurt someone else, even intentionally, even punching my little bro hurts even tho im super pissed, but man doing something like that to his bud, even if it was on accident, doesnt make a difference, kye deserves every prayer cr does, he's gone thru so much man, everyone in this world deserves a prayer, not just the one who is most hurt

^ I hear what you're saying and yes I do know because too many of my friend's and relitive's lives have been destroyed because they hurt someone else. But in this case, I'm going to worry about CR living rather then Kye feeling bad.

yea it sucks for CR if this tradgedy occured... my prayers are with everybody invloved, injuries truly are the worst part of this sport... But it hasnt been put up on Freeskier yet, and if you click on news at Powder, its not listed ...at all... also if you put in the title in the search bar it doesnt show this. I remember a few years back when somebody put up something about like 300 gladiator fighting midgets being killed by a lion in India or Bangledish or something, and everybody believed it because the dudes copied the HTML of the BBC's news page exactly, then wrote whatever they wanted... i am not saying that this is the case, just another option for a prank... if somebody finds a way to that article through powders site, without clicking on that link... then its probably real... dont get mad at me for this, i think CR is dope and I hope to god this is just a prank...

CR will pull through because he has to have a follow up to his smash hit "la revista freeskier" or whatever the name of the song he sings at the end of POP YOUR BOTTLEZ

A few facts......

CR was wearing a helmet when this happened. He was hit just below the brow of the helmet so his head took all the impact.

This is is no way Kye's fault. They were skiing in a group and the plan was to go off a jump rapid fire. CR crashed and Kye had no time to react. Anybody else in that situation would probably done more damage. When a whole group is involved in an accident you cannot place blame on any one person. Any dynamic of the group element could have changed that situation, but it happened purely as a freak accident.

They were not in the backcountry. It happened right under the lift at Brighton.

Only ns would turn something horible like this into a reason to bitch at each other over unrealated shit. For anyone who is making a post that has nothing to do with giving cr your best wishes, keep you thoughts for other threads. I hope this is that last post like this.

Best wishes man, seriously youll pull through and shit will get straight again.

dude, awhile ago, u said u werent gonna pray for him because he wasnt the one hurt, sorta because, it was kye that landed on him, u cant say that after ur posts earlier

Ok now you're just making assumptions man. In one thread I did say that I knew Kye was no good, but that was just out of joking because we didn't know how serious the situation was, or even was true. In no way did I put the blame on him.

Got any further updates? I don't suppose Powder will update, being as no one's going to be around for a while. How do you know this? I truly hope you aren't contributing to the rumor mill.

That is very insane. I hope everything goes well in the process of healing CR. And I don't think people should be giving Kye shit right now. He is probably facing the worst times in a while right now. And it wasn't his fault...it wasn't really anyones fault, it just gives us all a better reason to be more careful.

whatever happens, happens if it was one of us and we were in a train i doubt any of us would have stopped to check the landing everyone makes mistakes all you can do know is hope for the best for cr and kye

Fuck you. You can not imagine what Kye is going through right now. The fact that you would even consider trivializing the weight an accident of this nature puts on his shoulders is completely ignorant. It was not his fault, but it is only natural to blame yourself when something of this nature occurs. Has he not already had enough tradgedy in his life? Saying our thoughts should be with CR, while completely ignoring what Kye must be going through is callous and you need a smack upside the head you little inconsiderate fuck.

Well said. Kye knows very well what it's like to lose someone in a skiing accident. The fact that he may lose a friend, and by his own hand is probably a horrible weight that won't be lifted until he knows CR is gunna be alright.

I'm callin BS on the 50/50 percent chance for sure, and Coma? probably not if he was talking, its a medicine induced sleep probably, he's gellin with a serious head smack, he will be fine, and I am sure he can afford his own hospital bills as well. But best of luck to him. and in america? Kye is in much more danger of getting fucked in the long run anyway.

i like how you take this as something to laugh about.

i just hope CR comes out ok, and my prays to everyone invovled, because as it sounds, it was no ones fault

no... it wouldnt be his fault. it would be his spotters fault. He cant see over the cornice initially... so there needs to be a spotter on the radio tellin him when to go.

Stop blaming already, it's useless! What happened cannot be undone and if someone deserved a punishment, knowing that CR could('ve) die(d) is well enough!

happened to me once, but it was a snowboarder who landed on my ribs, cracked two of myd ribs bruise several and punctured a lung and my liver.

It actually.. well.. It wasnt anyones fault...

They were doing a train... you couldnt stop what happened...

true tradgedy.

CR Johnson Seriously Injured

By Christopher Jerard, yesterday

CR Johnson sustained a serious head injury last Thursday while filming inbounds at Brighton ski area in Utah.

Evan Raps, and several other riders who work with the film company C.R. is a part-owner of, The Bigger Picture, were filming an inbounds jump sequence that involved a rapid-fire succession of riders coming off a small hit — a practice common to ski and snowboard films. Raps, who jumped last in the group, and didn’t actually see the accident, told Freeskier that C.R. was the first off the jump, with Kye Peterson jumping directly after him, somehow coming out of the air and landing on C.R..

“I think it's important that people know C.R. was wearing a helmet when this happened,” says Evan Raps, who was at the scene of the accident. "We all decided to wear them full time this year. Unfortunately the impact was below the helmet brow. This was an accident and a freak thing."

Brighton ski patrol officially reports that the accident occurred inbounds and on the Millicent area of the mountain under the lift. He was air-lifted from Brighton to the University of Utah Hospital after the injury.

Currently C.R. is in very serious condition and being held in the critical care unit at the University of Utah hospital in Salt Lake City. He is in a coma. His mother Lorraine and father Russ are with C.R. in Utah.

C.R. Johnson has been an innovator friend in the ski industry since he was 15 years old. He first appeared in Freeskier with an impressive 1440 sequence photo taken at Squaw Valley in 1999 and has been a force in ski magazines and film ever since.

But far beyond C.R.’s huge athletic talent, he is a deeply thoughtful person who has worked diligently to progress the sport he loves both on and off the hill. Tonight C.R. and his family need the thoughts and prayers of all of those in the ski industry and beyond.

“C.R. improved for about 5 minutes yesterday. Yesterday was Sunday and the prayers of everyone must have helped. Russ put up a card from the McConkeys in C.R.’s room and I think that card from his friends helped too,” Lorraine told us today.

Our best thoughts are with C.R. and his family tonight and in the coming days. Please email your thoughts and words of support, love and encouragement for C.R. and his family to loveforCR@freeskier.com, and we will pass them on to the Johnsons.

If you want to send mail, his family has asked that you send it to:

"Over time, most people experience life involving love, suffering, compassion, the unspeakable drive for something new. For me there's skiing, nothing more, nothing less, and it encompasses everything, every day I'm out there."

-Pep Fujas

He's definitely been an amazing influence on all of us, I hope he pulls through.

I pray for your quick recovery, don't go gentle into that good night, man!
