Cool down with the ride on features

PURIST RANT INCOMING

I’m so sick of every fuckin feature in my park being a ride on/straddle-able lip. Like there’s a whole ass beginner park for that? I mean it’s nice to have like ride on for a big flat down tube or something like that I can respect. But holy shiiiit we need to start teaching the next generation how to urban on, we don’t need to be straddling a flat hand rail make em jump for that

This feature is one that really pisses me off with the lip. Like this is just a fat ass propane tank buried in the snow. Like there could be so much potential to just like, not build a lip for this so u could hop up on, use it as a stall, baby crusher on, possibilities are endless but instead nah we need to build a lip higher than the feature so you can only ride on

LET ME CRUSH BABIES PEAK PARKS

i am mostly with you. a decent, poppable lip that is about the same height as the rail but then a gap (even 1 foot will do) to the feature feels the best. if the rail is especially short, i don't mind a ride-on since it allows you go to slow and get the most out of it. so if you can get a rail thats 24' rather than 12' the gap on becomes a reasonable and preferred option i reckon. i also just wish (and always ask park crew to think about) that the takeoffs would be wider across the board. 3' on each side of a down rail is not enough. i want like 8' wide lips on each side. i know there are considerations for the cat and everything but just make it as wide as possible please!

At my local they have a two 15ft tubes, one is 2 feet off the ground and the other is like 5 feet tall, I like it v much

@ the over arching problem of parks becoming too progressive and not challenging enough anymore. Bring back street level gnar to the parks.

The real problem is that parks barely have boxes anymore. Fuck tubes, useless imaginary feature, ledges exist in real life, being back boxes.

Real shit tho, all u see ever is a flat box nowadays, when I was a grom I remember boxes being so much more creative and fun and having weird shapes and shit

I’ve never had luck trying to straddle into a rail. Urban is legit way easier

I can’t fuckin straddle idk how these kids do it. Urban gets to such a better lock in

I just talked to a park crew homie and he literally said they they get complaints from all the comp-jock kids when they build urban on features.

cringe meter is off the charts

Sorry honey, you didn't read the signage and you also signed the liability waiver but I'm gonna crush this incident investigation

Like I busted my ass so many times learning rails on these massive urban on features just to get basic tricks. Now I can barely do these tricks on tiny ass features because I don't feel I have enough time.

I’m gonna make an edit of that in protest

Done a few end of day park laps like that while park crew was raking (I asked first and they were cool with it).

Also you'd really like LMP at Loon, they tend to put in features with little to no lip.

literally just had a kid tell me that he had 2p2 on lock, but my locals lips “weren’t good enough”

Love this post. I was a box hater until recently I was trying to get blind 2 out of a concrete ledge. I can do them first try off any rail or tube, but it was a battle to get it off the ledge cause I never spin out of boxes. Need to fix that

It's not for you, it's for snowboarders and "safer" features. Ride on boxes that are wider than a snowboard is the perfect feature for people who started snowboarding because it LoOkS ExTr3Me. Granted, it's not the early 2000s anymore so this trend may be gone. It's also safer, you can't skewer yourself on a ride on feature but you can on one that is not.

If you’re talking beginner boarders yes but every good snowboarder I know is obsessed with street style lips, and parks built by snowboarders like Brighton and Loon have them

Nah if you cant see why boxes are superior then this pic is a self portrait, swaps aren't the only tricks you can do on rails

I feel like the only person I see do cool stuff on boxes that you can't do on tubes is Mitchel Bower.

5050s on tubes is way cooler than 5050s on boxes.

It opens up for way more creativity, there's a reason you never really see wizard tricks on anything but boxes, ski slides are more natural, you can press into the noses and tails while sliding, none of these kinds of tricks are common on tubes. You can also still do crazy swap combos but they just lend themselves to more, especially kinked boxes.

Also like hi_vis said, being comfortable pedaling on boxes definitely makes hitting actual ledges a lot easier. They're good features to have in terrain parks and I see way less of them every year for some reason.

Kids these days claiming tricks then pull this shit bc it’s not a ride on 10 foot flat tube…

Nah but for real. Maybe its my jaded industry baby-ass talking shit but most resorts/ski areas that have had great park setups or have a reputation for having a great setup almost always build them with progression in mind. It is kind-of annoying hearing kids talk shit about features not being up to their spec and talk-shit on beginners for trying park skiing out. We all remember the first time we slid a rail, so keep the hardo shit to yourself. You guys can always go dig out some stairsets outside too ya know if you aren't pleased with your park crew.

And by “crush it” I mean “lift your feet sweety, as I completely sweep it under the rug”

CYA so I don't wind up in court with some of these retarded beaters.

Give me corrugated tubes. The ride ons are ok to learn stuff on but in reality your landing half way down the rail if its short and your not going a normal speed.

The park at my local is terrible for this rn. I'm just going to use the backyard setup and get into the streets more

granite got the most wacky mfs, too bad they can’t learn how to hit real rails

Love me some tubes but this the realest shit I read all week. Been vibing with boxes more and more in the past few years, and even more so when I discovered how fun hitting ledges in the street are. Used to hate flat bar style rails but those are growing on me hella too.

Boxes require a higher maintenance compared to rails/ tubes.

With that said, I'd love to see a return of massive whale tail, rainbow, and battleship boxes, not the 8 foot mini versions parks have today.

Side note, get rid of rails that don’t have lips, shit doesn’t make sense, and if ppl want to Ollie onto rails they can still do it

The problem isn’t that progression features exist. I skied park in the days where there were no progression features, parks were super sketchy, and it sucked. What we need is a mix. Not everything should be a huge down bar with a tiny lip, but not everything should be a fat tube with a ride on lip. There should be both
