^ was one of my favourite edits from hood, hoping for the best

Absolutely tragic so horrible to hear it ended even when they were being safe with life jackets..SIP Matt

fuuuck this is the second person to pass cliff jumping this summer mad vibes to his family n the hoodcrew. Be smart out there people cliff jumping/rope swings are no joke

it's unreal to think that I saw that guy ski at hood last summer, and now he's just dead.

I really have a hard time wrapping my head around deaths, I hate this shit. Heff was a dope slier and watching him live was something else

RIP

Damn and just to think this morning I was watching an edit with him and now Im seeing all the posts. Its sad to see another good skier gone from cliff jumping, be cautious and make sure theres nothing dangerous underwater.

SIP Matt, you were clearly an amazing dude.

I lived with Matt for a little while. He was a really great person all around. Can't believe it.

I don't know of Matt, but reading the article you posted is heartbreaking. A young life suddenly gone. So tragic. RIP to this young man.

Heff was the best person I knew. He will be missed by many. It's a sad day for a lot of people.

heff was easily one of the best all around skiers ive ever met, and easily one of the best humans ive ever met. its not often you meet people these days that not only are genuinely stoked to meet you, but will continue to say what up and remember who you are when you see them again. it litterally only took 10 seconds to feel like you were great friends with him. he affected many lives in utah in 100% positive ways and will be remembered forever as an amazing person. rip heffy. cant even get out the words i want to about him.

This is tragic. Puts the real dangers of these sports in perspective. Sounds like heff was an unreal dude; I didn't know him at all but reading these comments gave me the chills nonetheless. My thoughts go out to family and friends. SIP man.

I could not agree more! Heff truly just wanted to be your friend. I never new matt that well but he would always remember my name and say hello every-time i saw him. He was a genuine dude that will be missed greatly. Its hard to believe he is gone. what a dude he was!

Really fucking bummed....Heffy was one of the good dudes in this world. Please be safe everyone, as it's hard to believe Heff is gone. S.I.P.

Didn't know who Matt even was until Steve posted about it on Facebook. That edit at the top brought a smile to my face, and tears to my eyes, knowing that the man I was watching tear it up is gone. Matt's in my thoughts tonight.

vibes to friends and family. Sad day when we lose a skier. Life's fragile man. Sad to see him gone.

This whole thing has got me fucked up! Its crazy how fast something can just happen that changes so many peoples lives forever. Such a good person too, Fucking RIP Matt. Thoughts going out to his family and loved ones.

Please learn something from this.

Heff died having fun but sometimes fun isn't worth it.

Spent some great ski days with this kid, including the best day of my life. He was truly an inspirational person to be around. His presence made everyone step up their game. Thoughts and prayers to his family and everyone in the local community.

The last time i went to hood for the summer i spent a week in heffys house. I knew one homie really well but besides that i met everybody on the spot. Everyone was real cool, but heffy went out of his way to make me feel at home and part of the crew which ill never forget. He helped make that one of the best weeks ive ever had. Heff was a great skier and a better man, know youre watching us buddy

Everybody's dying.

what the fuck

SIP to Heff, dude was a straight animal on the sticks and he died doing something he loved. Hits close to home, even though I never knew him personally. Just watched his 2014 season edit and it got me stoked for skiing, I know if it was me up there, I'd want my edits to continue to stoke people up, so, here's the edit!

It is impossible to express how hard it is to say goodbye to such a great soul. The thing I cannot stop thinking about is how literally no one can think of anything bad to say about Matt. It has already been said but he was the most genuine guy out there. He has touched countless lives in a positive way. It just makes me sad to know that people will no longer get to know the true joy that Heff had to share. I am honored to have known him and called him my friend. Rest in peace my dude, thanks for showing us all how to really live life to the fullest.

Very sad. His edits were always fire. After reading this, I think I'm going to take it down a notch on the cliff jumping

these news are always so hard to read... never knew matt personally but i heard only good things about this guy. ski in peace matt!

and to honor him, i'll write Matt Heffernan on my skis next season

we lost a good one today. heff was one of my favorite people ever. his personality was infectious and he was a better all around skier than anyone I've ever met. my deepest, most sincere condolences go out to everyone who was ever lucky enough to know him. heffy was the fucking man, and the skiing world now has an absolutely massive hole with his passing. he was loved by all, and will be missed by all.

Grew up skiing with Heff in Ohio. Not even sure how we met, just remember being friends and everyone at our local resort looked up to him. From chairlift rides, big air comps, showing me around Brighton and crashing on his couch in Utah, Heff was truly one of a kind. Really going to miss him

Always tragic when something like this happens. RIP.

I know lifejackets are often recommended at water holes and reservoirs because of underground currents and suction-life flows that aren't obvious from the surface (water is still). I've read of whole families dying when parents try to save their kids but themselves cannot escape these treacherous and hidden currents. Not sure if this was the case here, but may well be.

underground currents

Also, I should mention is that the other danger is not knowing which way is up when underwater. You can have a bad landing, end up underwater and dis-oriented (which might've been dark due to the muddy environment and then end up not swimming correctly to the surface (as coupled with those currents.)) Eventually you can end up panicking.

Typically you'd either swim toward the light, watch your bubbles to discover up, or pull yourself up with a surfboard strap (which he wouldn't have had.)

Anyhow, not really the thread to discuss this, but important to mention.
