thats a great opinion and while this is the internet and you have the right to spew whatever you would like out of your fingertips, you should still consider that while you may be right and i share your general beliefs, you make posts like this to disprove someones core belief system and you do it all nonchalant. It is not benefiting anyone at all. all you are doing is creating a negative environment. we are all people, everyone believes something lets leave it at that and celebrate things we all share! no hate just a perspective on the arguing about unprovable concepts that people are passionate about.

Yes, it is. Mind you, with good intentions.

The bible has some solid lessons that have really helped people live their life as happy fulfilled individuals. But many of "the bibles teachings" have been misinterpreted by people with their own agendas, of course causing perpetual war and violence for basically all of recorded history. Often their actions that were inspired by the bible, severely contradict many of it's other teachings, interestingly enough.

People follow religion because they are scared of what they cannot explain. It's a way of self medication for life's problems, and it works.

Although I am very open minded to religion, I have never prescribed to any kind of faith.

While i think that all religion is bull shit, at the same time i think that if all of the people that believe in it suddenly started thinking for them selves we would be fucked. They would realize that when you die you just die so it doent matter what you do with your life. I not saying to go kill people, im just saying that there isnt a guy up in the sky that is shaking his head thinking of ways to make your life suck everytime you say god.If there was a god we wouldnt have cancer and Genocide cuz he could just stop that shit.

i believe in god, but the stories of the bible are not literal, they are meant to teach you to be a better person

atleast the people who believe in god that read this thread won't be disappointed once they die.

the way i see it, the concept of god is kind of fucked up. it's just a scapegoat for the things we do wrong as well as something to believe in to get us through tough circumstances. some people might need the idea of a god to believe in when they're down or wondering why life has dealt them the cards that it has, but quite frankly that role could be filled by a significant other, a loved one, or even just a friend. it's not the existence of a god that people need, it's simply the IDEA.

it's something to hope for and pray for so that we will avoid the inevitable fear of death and the end of our lives. i posted this in another thread but ignorance is bliss, and the belief in god is a perfect example of this.

to those out there that are religious, no hate, i hope i haven't offended you, these are simply my beliefs and i have just as much of a right to them as you have your right to believe in god, heaven, hell, satan, whatever.

I agree that Christianity is false, but Zeitgeist is a bag of pseudo-history conspiratorial dildos.

9/11 was an outside job.

one thing that i never understood is that satan originally disobeyed the word of god and challenged him/her/it. now the bible says that if we disobey the word of god ourselves we will be doomed to an eternity of punishment in hell. this makes me think, would satan not praise us for challenging the word of god like he himself did and instead of being punished for eternity; have an awesome time for all eternity?

Teach you to be a better person? and yes they are very literal. In fact lets take a look at some of the bibles laws.

Don't wear clothes made of more than one fabric (Leviticus 19:19)

Don't cut your hair nor shave. (Leviticus 19:27)

Any person who curseth his mother or father, must be killed. (Leviticus 20:9) Have you ever done that?

If a man cheats on his wife, or vise versa, both the man and the woman must die. (Leviticus 20:10).

If a man sleeps with his father's wife... both him and his father's wife is to be put to death. (Leviticus 20:11)

If a man sleeps with his wife and her mother they are all to be burnt to death. (Leviticus 20:14)

If a man or woman has sex with an animal, both human and animal must be killed. (Leviticus 20:15-16).

If a man has sex with a woman on her period, they are both to be "cut off from their people" (Leviticus 20:18)

Psychics, wizards, and so on are to be stoned to death. (Leviticus 20:27)

If a priest's daughter is a whore, she is to be burnt at the stake. (Leviticus 21:9)

People who have flat noses, or is blind or lame, cannot go to an altar of God (Leviticus 21:17-18)

Anyone who curses or blasphemes God, should be stoned to death by the community. (Leviticus 24:14-16)

Anyone who dreams or prophesizes anything that is against God, or anyone who tries to turn you from God, is to be put to death. (Deuteronomy 13:5)

If anyone, even your own family suggests worshipping another God, kill them. (Deuteronomy 13:6-10)

If you find out a city worships a different god, destroy the city and kill all of it's inhabitants... even the animals. (Deuteronomy 13:12-15)

Kill anyone with a different religion. (Deuteronomy 17:2-7)

Its not like the ten commandments really give a great moral guideline either. Only 4 of them are actually really about ethical or moral things.

And it isn't even until the new testament when the fun begins and the idea that if you don't agree with christianity you will be burned and tortured for eternity.

there are lots of uplifting and positive passages you could have taken from the bible as well.

of course, but to suggest the bible is some kind of wholesome book is ridiculous, and what I can't stand is cafeteria style Christians who only look at the good passages. If you are going to accept the bible as the word of god then you have to obey all of its rules.

These are all from the old testament. The point of the new testament is that Jesus came and died for our sins (shaving, cheating etc)I don't go to church or really consider myself a part of any religion but I do think that the what religion is supposed to be is a good thing. Because of religion there are people going to 3rd world countries to make people lives better, and a lot of kids who grew up going to church could remember what they were taught there. Religion has become so involved politics that any super-religious person is defined as an anti-abortion anti-controceptives crazy person, because any more thats all they are.

I also believe in a god and an afterlife because I like to hang on to hope that I'll see people that have died again. If I'm wrong it won't matter because I'll be dead and would have lived my whole life with a little bit of hope and happiness because I thought there was a god.

Thats just my opinion and if I'm ignorant or hiding from the facts then so be it.

There is literally no point to Zeitgeist. I have no idea why you need to put down religion. Fucking waste of time.

hmmm lets see what jesus had to say about the old testament along with some other wonderful quotes.

Matthew

Jesus strongly approves of the law and the prophets. He hasn't the slightest objection to the cruelties of the Old Testament. 5:17

Those who bear bad fruit will be cut down and burned "with unquenchable fire." 3:10, 12

Jesus recommends that to avoid sin we cut off our hands and pluck out our eyes. This advice is given immediately after he says that anyone who looks with lust at any women commits adultery. 5:29-30

Jesus says that most people will go to hell. 7:13-14

Those who fail to bear "good fruit" will be "hewn down, and cast into the fire." 7:19

"The children of the kingdom [the Jews] shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." 8:12

So in the New Testament, you completely believe Romans 13 telling you to obey all rule and rulers in place over you since they were put there by god? Come onnnnn hahahahh

actually, no. I'm going to stay neutral, but still going to call you out. The old testament is where you got all that. That was back when Christianity was primitive - very unorganized. The old testament is more history. The new testament is what Christians should really follow - what Jesus taught. He never said any of that stuff. I agree with snobunny, if you want to be just a swell Christian, follow the new stuff. That's the meaningful stuff. Remember: this book was written by humans. So back then, you get the people who are INSANELY superstitious, etc. They don't know how the menstrual cycle works, why homosexuality happens - they just want life to progress. They think that stuff is evil, since they know nothing of it. Restating: Old testament: history. New Testament: "the good stuff". You clearly DON'T have a good, unbiased opinion of Christianity... you should look into that. It's really interesting stuff. Look at it from both sides, because if all you listen to is Chris Hitchens, Dawkins and so on... they don't have anything good to say about religion and that isn't giving them the benefit of the doubt.

So Jesus taught people to blindly obey any rule/ruler for the simple fact that they were put there by god. Are you suuuuuure? Just doesn't seem like something Jesus would say, not saying I knew the guy or anything.

i can totally understand that a lot of people need religion. seriously, it gives you a meaning of life when you dont dare to create one for yourself.

whatever you want, do it. i dont give a fuck.

but saying somethin like "ohohohoh, you atheists always pick the bad parts in the bible" is just horseshit. boo fucking hoo. either the bible IS god-inspired or not. but picking out the passages that are ok and those that are not has nothing to do with christianity or judaism for that matter.

also, you dont need religion for morals. when you need some weird eternal punishment to not go on a killing spree tomorrow, youre a bad person to begin with.

None of this is out of context. Also in regards to your other post I studied the bible (never believed in it) my grandpa was a priest.

Here is some more from Matthew.

10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

Yeah, but you have to understand that atheism, buddism, catholicism, judaism, etc. Are all made up as well.

i do know a few decent religious people, but i feel sorry for them that they have to take faith in utter bullshit just to feel validated about their own existence. then again, i'm unhappy with my existence, so who am i to talk? not to mention most everyone has a skewed or warped view of whatever it is they follow, including people who claim to believe in science yet never read a fucking book about it or care to learn about it. i wish the government actually cared about the separation of church and state, but they continue to make it painfully obvious they don't. i think most people take comfort in their own ignorance, they like to just believe in one or two things and then they decide they're set and that nothing else matters. religion, christianity specifically, sickens me. i was baptized at the age of 13, by my own choice (thanks mom and dad for not forcing it upon me), and luckily by the time i was 14 i'd realized it was all bullshit and i never went to church again. sure, there's some messages in there that make people feel good about themselves, but there's also a lot of stuff in there that teaches you to be ignorant, hateful, and spiteful of everyone who doesn't believe what you believe. i know a lot more people who have been hurt by religion than helped by it.
